2 SO MANY: A FOLIO DEDICATED TO ALL WHO SERVED WITH RAF BOMBER COMMAND, 1939-45.
Macmillan, [Toronto], (1995).
276 pp, folio, HC. "The central theme is the courage of thousands of men - most of them from ordinary backgrounds in Britain and the Empire, but including important groups from countries overrun by Germany - who survived one of the most severe and prolonged periods of physical danger and mental strain any group of people has ever been asked to bear. Over 55,500 of them were killed. The principal content allocates ten pages to each of 25 aircrew, who, often straight from school, served as pi lots, navigators, bomb-aimers, signallers, flight engineers and air gunners in Bomber Command in World War 2. Each has a biography, a photograph of his memorabilia, a handwritten reminiscence and a painted silhouette showing him as he i s i n 1 9 9 4 . Thus he will make his mark in history, and you, the reader, will be able to judge what manner of man he was. You will also be able to decide how much you owe to men like him for the fact that today Europe is entirely free, and no t e ns la v ed u nd er a single master-race." Ribbon marker. Michael Joseph, London, 1981, first edtion.
206 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0718120396 Charming b&w illustrations. "There is a growing need for the 'quiet fields' in this noisy, restless world. Mercifully, they can still be found by the country-lover and naturalist . This book tells of a year spent deep in the countryside, beginning when the year is young, when trees and hedges are bare to the winter winds, and on through the spring, summer and autumn, to winter once again. Whatever the season of t h e y e a r t h ere is always something to see in the countryside, even when the 'quiet fields' are sheeted with snow. There are the winter migrants - the wildfowl of the wet places, the delicate fieldfares and redwings - who come to Britain to e sc ap e t he b it t er t emperatures of their native lands. 'BB' also describes the advent of the spring migrants, which bring such intense joy to the naturalist that he even had to surrender his studio to a swallow family, which honoured him wi th a v is it and tw o l us ty bro ods of young. And the arrival of frogs at his Big Pond, the first for years, was a red-letter day in his calendar. There is still magic and a sense of peace in Britain's woods and fields. This book sets out to p rov e it , a nd the illu stra tio ns by D .J. Watkins-Pitchford echo exactly the spirit of the writing...." These were the strangely moving, strangely revealing last words spoken by Napoleon Bonaparte as he lay dying on the isle of S t. Helena in 1821. Ever since, they have contributed to the popular heroic image of the man who commanded the loyalty of millions, conquered almost the whole of Europe and lost the woman he loved. But his will, reprinted here in facsimile a n d t r a n slated into English for the first time, throws fascinating new light on one of the most enigmatic and extraordinary figures in history. From the detailed lists of his shirts and snuff boxes to the distribution of millions of francs, fr om h i s bi tt er denunciation of the 'English oligarchy and their hired assassin' to his fervent attempts to keep the Napoleonic legend alive through his son, 'The Last Will and Testament' illustrates the contradictions of the Corsican turned Fre nch man , th e ' pet it caporal' turned 'Empereur', the man turned superman and, finally, the man." The Krozairs were the highest order of chivalry on that turbulent planet, dedicated men, warriors of stern conviction and unflinching hearts. Thus when the Krozairs in their hour of need called on all their far-flung members for aid, he should have come. But he did not. His return had been blocked by the anger of the mysterious Star Lords. Random House, New York, 2007, first edition.
160 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 9781400066414 "Here, in his first collection since his three hilarious classics 'Getting Even', 'Without Feathers', and 'Side Effects', Woody Allen has managed to write a book that not only a nswers the most profound questions of human existence but is also the perfect size to place under any short table leg to prevent wobbling. 'I awoke Friday, and because the universe is expanding it took me longer than usual to find my robe,' h e e x p l ains in a piece on physics called 'Strung Out'. In other flights of inspirational sanity we are introduced to a cast of characters only Allen could imagine: Jasper Nutmeat, Flanders Mealworm, and the independent film mogul E. Coli Big g s, j u st t o na me a few. Whether he is writing about art, sex, food, or crime ('Pugh has been a policeman as far back as he can remember. His father was a notorious bank robber, and the only way Pugh could get to spend time with him was to a pp reh end h im' ), he is explosively funny. In 'This Nib for Hire,' a Hollywood bigwig comes across an author's book in a little country store and describes it in a way that aptly captures this magnificent volume: 'Actually,' the producer says, 'I 'd n ever se en a bo ok rema indered in the kindling section before'." London Jonathan Cape 1976 022401305X / 9780224013055 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+ Tom Adams, dust jacket art.
208 pp, 8" H. "It is 1976, but things are not the same. Due to a slight alteration in history involving Catherine of Aragon, Martin Luther, Thomas More and others, a Holy Victory was won in an event called the War of the English Succession, and today England, like most of the world, is virtually ruled by a Machiavellian Pope who hails from Yorkshire. Piety is rampant, science is a forbidden word and New England is a wild abode of exile for Schismatics and common criminals. Hubert Anvil is simply the best boy singer in living memory, and the Abbot is soon to propose that he undergo a simple operation to preserve his heavenly voice at the cost of his earthly pleasure. Hubert's pious father agrees to the 'alteration', reassuring the boy that his voice is a special gift from God and that, as he will never experience manhood, he won't miss it. Hubert's more wayward mother is forced to admit that the love of men and women, though less exalted than the love of God, is a very powerful force indeed, and the family confessor, who is also her lover and an overbold foe of authority, has to agree. With his suspicions aroused that the glory of God may not be much compensation for what he will be missing - Hubert plans his escape - into a world where to be a runaway is a dangerous crime and a deadly sin." Front pastedown is trimmed to edge of front board instead of being inset from edge, slight fading to color on top of text blcok near spine, tiny bump at bottom of rear hinge. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has very minor edge wear/wrinkling.

16 Amundsen, Roald. Translated from the Norwegian by A.G. Chater. THE SOUTH POLE: AN ACCOUNT OF THE NORWEGIAN ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION IN THE "FRAM", 1910-1912. (2 VOLUMES IN 1.)
Toronto McClelland and Stewart, Toronto, 1976, facsimile reprint of John Murray, 1912 editions. 1976 0771001304 / 9780771001307 Facsimile Reprint of John Murray 1912 Ed Hard Cover Very Good Good+
393 pp + 449 pp (2 volumes in 1), 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w photographs, maps (1 fold-out), fold-out plan of the 'Fram'. "In the southern spring of 1911 two separate expeditions left their respective winter quarters in Antarctica in a desperate bid to achieve the glory of being first at the South Pole - a British party, led by Captain R.F. Scott, and a Norwegian one under Captain Roald Amundsen. Scott reached the Pole on 18 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegains had forestalled him over a month previously. Disconsolate, Scott and his four companions retraced their footsteps across the polar plateau, a 'via dolorosa' which was to lead to the deaths of all five from hunger and exposure. Scott's edited diary of the events has been a perennial bestseller ever since. Amundsen's own account, translated into English as 'The South Pole', never achieved the same popularity. Lacking in personal charisma, Amundsen was to some extent a victim of British chauvinism, which stereotyped him as a devious foreigner not above gaining the Pole by a deceitful stratagem and, worse by far, sacrificing his dogs to do so. His complaint in later years that British schoolchildren were being taught to regard Scot t as the true discoverer of the South Pole was probably no exaggeration. Today we can look back to these distant events more dispassionately, and freely give Amundsen the credit that is his due. He was a truly professional explorer who took pains to put all his theories to the test and left nothing to chance. 'The South Pole', which so successfully exemplifies Amundsen's philosophy of exploration, is a polar masterpiece which deserves to be in print again after so many years in limbo." Previous owner's name/date on front pastedown, embossed blind stamp on free front endpaper, a few edge creases and tiny tear archivally taped on fold-out map at rear, tiny speck on top of textblock, very light soiling on bottom of textblock, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor edge wear. 17 Anderes, Fred & Agranoff, Ann. ICE PALACES.
Toronto Macmillan of Canada 1983 0771598572 / 9780771598579 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
132 pp, oblong (9 1/8" H x 10 3/4" D). Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w photographs, repro-ductions, architectural drawings. "The magical buildings illustrated in this pioneer study of a virtually unknown architectural phenomenon were truly built of ice, and they were said to shimmer with color and fire reminiscent of sapphire, topaz, and opal. In style they recalled medieval castles, Gothic cathed-rals, Russian palaces, and Art Deco fantasies. Many were huge, reaching as high as a 14 -story building and extending as long as a football field, but, of course, there's no physical trace of them. Nevertheless, the authors have discovered dozens of historic photographs, lithographs, postcards, paintings, and drawings of these fabulous but ephemeral constructions, as well as mementoes of the winter activities and sports surrounding their creation. (They) relate the history of ice castle building and examine about thirty in detail. This type of architectural tour de fource had its beginning in 18th-century Russia, when the eccentric Empress Anna Ivanova built an icy honeymoon cottage for an out-of-favor prince. In North America, ice palaces were created as centrepieces for the winter carnivals that sprang up in northern cities in the late 19th century. Between 1883 and 1942, grand castles were built of blocks of ice in the Canadian cities of Montreal, Quebec, and Ottawa, and also in St. Paul, Minnesota, and Leadville, Colorado. Today the leading centers for construction in ice and snow are at the annual winter festivals held in Quebec, Canada, and Sapporo, Japan. (T)he authors - both architects - examine the theory and practice of building with ice (which under certain conditions has the structural properties of concrete), both for practical and fantastic purposes." Book is clean and bright. Dust jacket has light rubbing - mainly on front panel, minor wrinkling at top of spine.

18 Anderson, J.R.L. DEATH IN THE GREENHOUSE.
London Victor Gollancz 1978 0575025263 / 9780575025264 First British Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
192 pp, 8"H. "Old Mr Quenenden has retired to a cottage in Berkshire, where he devotes himself to the selective breeding of tropical plants. Why, when he has lived there quietly for years, should someone shoot him dead in his greenhouse? Why should he leave his little fortune - a quarter of a million pounds - to a North of England schoolmistress whom he seem to have known only slightly? And how do these events link up with an extraordinary blackmail demand received by the new Minister of State at the Foreign Office, Meredith Boscombe: a demand for one million pounds in used notes. The involvement of an important Minister brings Colonel Blair into the enquiry: Mr Anderson's fans will already know Blair well, as the agent who acts as liaison officer between the police and the Government. Now Blair's investigations lead him into the curious problem of the little white plants of the genus 'adamantifera', and the elusive clue of the plain van, and the startling revelations about the death of Boscombe's Indian wife. All of which leads to an immensely exciting climax in the heart of Africa, with Blair in pursuit of a triple murderer, and narrowly escaping death in the mighty Otaro Falls." Previous owner's initials in ink on free front endpaper, tiny light foxing mark on fore-edge of textblock. Dust jacket has some light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, small corner crease on rear flap, minor edge browning.

20 Andrezel, Pierre. (pseud of Karen Blixen, aka Isak Dinesen). Dust jacket art by Michael Wickham. THE ANGELIC AVENGERS.
Putnam, London, 1946, first British edition.
303 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "Pierre Andrezel, whose name appears on this novel, is described as a young Frenchman, born in Rouen 1915, and educated at Oxford where he wrote stories for English magazines. His original publication of 'The Angelic Avengers' in Copenhagen in 1944 may be explained by the state of France at that time, and the less oppressive conditions of the Danes, whom the British Prime Minister dubbed 'the Gangster's Canary Birds'. The use of this phr a s e i n the book can hardly fail to be an allusion, and may have a certain significance, although it would be an error to regard the book as in any serious way allegorical. Pierre Andrezel has not been heard of since the appearance of his novel i n De n ma rk . The setting of (this book) is England and France 1840-41, when a romantic school of fiction still carried on something of the flamboyance and mystery of the Gothic Revival." - from the dust jacket flap. Pierre Andrezel was in f act K are n Bli xen ( Isaak Dinesen) of 'Out of Africa' fame. Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light to moderate browning, areas of light to moderate edge wrinkling, light edge wear. Very Good/Good+
