3 Ashe, Geoffrey. FROM CAESAR TO ARTHUR.
London Collins 1960 First Edition Hard Cover Good+ Good-
320 p, 8 1/2" H. "(A) study of the life and career of the historical King Arthur in so far as it can be traced through early documents and remains. (The author) begins with the decay of Roman power and its slow disappearance from Britain, while invasion, anarchy and warring small kingdoms take its place. Then comes a reversal of fortune without parallel in the dissolving Empire, when a western Christian military chieftain stems the Saxon tide and imposes a long truce. In this unique recovery, it is suggested, lies a previously unnoticed clue to the whole development of the British monarchy. The kingdom finally created by Alfred the Great and his successors turns out to have been decisively affected by the earlier achievement of Arthur and the failure of the first Saxon attempt at conquest. Piecing together his fragments of history to form the most vivid possible whole, Mr. Ashe explains how the great tradition of Arthur flowed into the Arthurian Legend, and shows how that legend, fantastic and romantic as it is, nevertheless embodies a profound historical insight." Very light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, moderate browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, a few tiny and small edge tears, a few tiny scuffs on spine, minor edge browning, protected in a mylar sleeve.

5 Bergstein, Rachelle. WOMEN FROM THE ANKLE DOWN: THE STORY OF SHOES AND HOW THEY DEFINE US.
New York Harper 2012 0061969613 / 9780061969614 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Nami Matsuo Scott.
284 pp, 9 1/4" H. Small b&w illustrations. "What is it about a pair of shoes that so enchants women of all ages, demographics, political affiliations, and style tribes? Part social history, part fashion record, part pop-culture celebration, (this book) seeks to answer that question as it unfolds the story of shoes in the twentieth century. The tale begins in the rural village of Bonito, Italy, with a visionary young shoe-maker named Salvatore Ferragamo and ends in New York City with a fictional socialite and trend-setter named Carrie Bradshaw. Along the way it stops in Hollywood, where Judy Garland first slipped on her ruby slippers; New Jersey, where Nancy Sinatra heard something special in a song about boots; and the streets of Manhattan, where a transit-worker strike propelled women to step into cutting-edge athletic shoes. Beginnng with the well-heeled suffragettes in the 1910s, women have fought for greater freedom and mobility, a struggle that exploded in the 1960s with the women's liberation move-ment and culminated in the new millenium with our devotion to personal choice. Featuring interviews with designers, historians, and cultural experts, and a cast of real-life characters, from Marilyn Monroe to Jane Fonda, from Gwen Stefani to Manolo Blahnik, (it) is a lively, compelling look at the evolution of modern woman and the fashion that reflects - and has shaped - their lives." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine - also tiny tear at top of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top of hinges, minor rubbing.

Vancouver Douglas & McIntyre 1990 0888947038 / 9780888947031 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
222 pp, 9 1/4" H. "It's a hot August day at a political picnic on the Canadian prairies. Andy Boychuk, the newly elected leader of the province's opposition party, is preparing to speak. All of the key people in his life - family, friends, enemies - are waiting expectantly. He walks to the lectern, pours a glass of water, drinks, and collapses. Within seconds, he is dead. Joanne Kilbourn, Andy's speechwriter, is stunned, but she is no stranger to sudden death. In the hours after Andy's murder, she relives the anguish she felt years earlier when her husband was brutally killed by a complete stranger. As Joanne begins to delve into Andy Boychuk's past, she unexpectedly enters a world of concealed passions and sexual intrigue. Then someone decides to stop her. By her own assessment, Joanne is an ordinary Canadian woman - and that is her strength. She works hard, has a wry sense of humour and leads the hectic life of a single mother. Although tough minded enough to make her way in the cutthroat world of provincial politics, she is not by nature a risk-taker or an adventurer. But when she sees her world threatened by chaos and violence, she decides to take action to restore order and a measure of decency." Dust jacket has minor edgewear/wrinkling, light rubbing.

PROPS ON HER SLEEVE: THE WARTIME LETTERS OF A CANADIAN AIRWOMAN., Buch, Mary Hawkins (Inscribed by) with Gossage, Caroline.
10 Buch, Mary Hawkins (Inscribed by) with Gossage, Caroline. PROPS ON HER SLEEVE: THE WARTIME LETTERS OF A CANADIAN AIRWOMAN.
Dundurn Press, Toronto, (1997), Ist printing.
171 pp, 8vo, soft cover with self-flaps. INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR ON TITLE PAGE. B&w photographs. "A first-hand account of the experiences of a young Canadian airwoman who served both in Canada and on overseas duty, this series of 150 letters brings home the day-to-day immediacy of life in uniform during the Second World War. Moments of hilarity interspersed with impatience and frustration are recorded verbatim, along with an underlying sense of urgency about winning a war that hung in the balance for too long. Written to the Dean of Women at Macdonald College in Ste. Anne de Bellevue, Mary Buch's letters lay untouched for over fifty years after her return to Canada from England in 1945. Today they serve as a looking-glass in to the War Years that is tinged with the freshness of youthful spontaneity and the promise of a brighter tomorrow. Carolyn Gossage has interwoven colourful contextual sidebars that provide today's readers with an overview of the times and circumstances that have become increasingly elusive in the intervening years." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor edge wear, slight soft crease to top corner of rear cover - with very light migration into last few papges, spine flat and uncreased. VG+

252 pp, 13 1/2" H. Brown cloth with gilt lettering on spine, pictorial endpapers. In publisher's original plain cardboard slipcase. B&w and colour reproductions. "(A) stunning exhibition of the city's mag-nificent art treasures. Compiled by the directors of Prague's National Museum and National Gallery, this important and eye-filling work is a rich cornucopia which art historians, students of central Europe, and travelers to the historic city may sample with profit and pleasure. Itself an art treasure with its ancient buildings, historic monuments, and panoramic views, 'the city of a hundred towers' is home to notable collections of paintings, drawings, sculpture, and objects d'art dating from Charles IV and even earlier. Reflecting Prague's position at the heart of Europe along centuries-old trade routes, these collections encompass the continent's many schools of art, architecture, and handicrafts and repre-sent a distillation of Prague's turbulent thousand-year history. Modern scholarship, including some extraordinary scholarly detective work on the Prague Castle Gallery collection, has uncovered, restored, and made available to experts and public alike many little-known treasures. Equally impressive are collections of early art, coins, astronomical instruments, and Bohemian and modern Czechoslovak glass and porcelain. History of church and state can be glimpsed in the art of stone-cutters, goldsmith and silversmiths, weavers and embroiderers, and masters of illuminated manu-scripts." Contents: Introduction; National Museum; National Gallery; Museum of Decorative Arts; Museum of the City of Prague; Treasury of St. Vitus' Cathedral; Prague Castle Gallery; State Jewish Museum; Military Museum; Illuminated Manuscripts in Prague Libraries. Slight toning to edges of text block, light toning in margins of illustration pages. 16 Donegan, Rosemary. Introduction by Rick Salutin. SPADINA AVENUE
Vancouver Douglas & McIntyre 1985 0888944721 / 9780888944726 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
192 pp, 11 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "Spadina has been the starting point for wave after wave of new Canadian immigrants. Once the main focus for Jewish culture and life in Toronto, the street became a centre of commerce and saw intense political activity during the thirties and forties. Now the Jewish garment factories overlook bustling Chinese sidewalk markets. Greek cafes jostle with delicatessens and Szechuan restaurants. Contemporary art and music thrive amidst this colourful ethnic diversity. Studios and alternative galleries crowd abandoned warehouse space above street level, and all along the street, such classic watering holes as Grossman's, the El Macombo, the Paramount and the Silver Dollar dispense entertainment for tastes that run from black and new wave music to strippers. (This book) presents a collection of photographs and related texts ranging from the years when the street was a tree-lined boulevard, right through to today, when the Queen Street art scene and a rapidly expanding Chinatown are transforming Spadina. Drawing on his own Jewish roots and family history, Rick Salutin provides a very personal introduction that demonstrates how and why Spadina is unique, why it has become so important to those whose lives it has intersected. Organized to reflect and even recreate the Spadina experience, (it) takes the reader up the street starting at the lakeshore and ending at Bloor Street." Very tiny bump at top corner of both boards, small slight bump at top of rear hinge. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of spine and flap-folds.

THE SECRET MEANING OF THINGS., Ferlinghetti, Lawrence.
20 Ferlinghetti, Lawrence. THE SECRET MEANING OF THINGS.
New York New Directions 1968 Third Printing Soft Cover Good Signed by Author
48 pp, 7 15/16" H. Signed on half title page: "Ferlinghetti". "(B)rings together six long poems with a certain continuity and progression of vision. The first five poems form a related sequence in which the poet sees 'all too clearly'. In 'Assassination Raga' the 'glass' through which the poet sees darkly is the TV tube, and it was first read on the night of Robert Kennedy's funeral at a mammoth poetry reading in Nourse Auditorium, San Francisco. 'Bickford's Buddha' is a mediation on being afflicted with what the poet calls 'observation fever' - the ultimate vision being that of the 'all-seeing' Buddha. 'All too Clearly' finds a surreal meaning of things in flight. 'Through the Looking Glass' is also an in-flight poem, beginning with an actual flight aboard a commercial airliner and progressing through LSD vision to a final flash of how through everything 'Shiva advances with a broken arm'. 'After the Cries of Birds' is a logical opening-out of that vision into a wide-angle prophecy of the future of the world. 'Moscow in the Wilderness, Segovia in the Snow' is a separate long poem resulting from Ferlinghetti's trip across Russia and Siberia in the Winter of 1967." Interior - tiny bump at top corner of pages, one or two small light stains on inside of rear cover, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - light browning to edges of text block and to edges of rear cover, an area of light liquid marks on rear cover, very light edge wear, small crease at bottom corner of front cover.
