THE RUNES OF ELFLAND., Berk, Ari. Foreword by Brian Froud.
5 Berk, Ari. Foreword by Brian Froud. THE RUNES OF ELFLAND.
New York Harry N. Abrams 2003 0810946122 / 9780810946125 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Near Fine Brian Froud. Rune artifacts by Jason Hancox.
112 pp, 10 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated in colour. "The ancient and mystical runes of Celtic and European origin provide a rich source of inspiration for faery authority and fantasy artist Brian Froud's evocative paintings, which interpret these potent symbols through the prism of Elfland - the world of faeries and myth. In the hands of the exceptional folklorist and poet Ari Berki, the secret meanings of these runes are teased out and the power they offer us is made manifest. In the pages of this book a single symbol provides the visual key to a host of mythic stories, lands and adventures. Each of the twenty-four paintings is accompanied by its own poetic Charm, an invocation that unlocks the gate to the deeper meanings of the rune. Each rune has its Telling, a story of a place or of an individual that brings the imagery to life. Finally, each rune has its Gift, the interpretation of images, elements, and ideas that connects these imaginative journeys to our everyday life and experience. Sprinkled throughout are runic messages, with the alphabetic key to the runes at the end of the book, ready to assist in translation. By using the runes and Froud's paintings as tools to explore both the 'seen' world and the 'unseen' world, (this book) will inspire readers to re-imagine their own lives and tell their own tales. Both storybook and oracle, (it) provides a wellspring of personal insight for the Froud fan and the Faery aficionado." Book is Fine. Dust jacket has some very minor edge wrinkles.

THE MAGICAL ARTS: A SHORT HISTORY, Burland, C. A.
8 Burland, C. A. THE MAGICAL ARTS: A SHORT HISTORY
London Arthur Barker 1966 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good+
196 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). B&w illustrations. "From the earliest time man has been fascinated by visions and dreams, and by the discovery that there were men who could, by magical powers, improve a crop or foretell the weather. As civilization grew there were demands for knowledge which would give control over other men or protection from the wiles of enemies. The study of magic and counter magic became important in the policy of states. Later magic was denounced as a work of the Devil, and then the Devil himself was demoted to become a laughing stock. Yet even nowadays there exist in the most advanced nations societies devoted to magical practices, who deal in strange rituals, and promote the interests of their membership against all enemies. A careful study shows that there is a good deal of scientific knowledge involved in the vast and complex network of 'magical' practice today. This book sets out to show some of the main lines of influence which have led to the present traditions. It treats the subject as if if were a tapestry of many strands each of which has a line of origin from which it traverses like a weft thread on the warp of universal psychological experience. This book is a short history of a complex development. It is planned as a groundwork from which the interested reader can advance to further detailed studies." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, small slight bump at top corner of both boards. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear, a few small closed tears, jacket has been laminated for protection and to prevent further deterioration over the center portion (panels, spine and flap-folds).

Wreck Cove, Cape Breton Island Breton Books 1993 1895415284 / 9781895415285 Soft Cover Very Good
249 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs. "These are the folk tales from Dr. Helen Creighton's life journey through the Maritime Provinces, collecting songs and ghost stories and old cures - and folk tales. Helen serves as our guide, introducing us to storytellers, setting the scene of the telling - and then she lets the person tell it as they told it to her. The feel of the kitchen and the fish shed still cling to these stories. Some are long, really miraculous folk tales - miraculous in detail and in that they managed to survive. Others are the brief riddle or the tantalizing quick-telling that a folklorist can expect along the way. Helen kept it all. And read as a whole, the reality and intensity of those smaller pieces reveals their value in among the more finished, well-told tales. (This) is a Maritime treasure." Interior - crease at bottom corner of page leaf 89/90, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - slight bump at top of spine, minor rubbing, minor soft crease at top corner of rear cover.

Oxford Oxford University Press 1999 0192839187 / 9780192839183 Soft Cover Very Good
245 pp, 7 3/4" H. "This is the first complete translation of the largest literary text surviving from twelfth-century Ireland, and the most comprehensive early collection of Fenian stories and poetry. Three parallel worlds interact in the 'Tales': the contemporary Christian world of Saint Patrick, with his scribes, clerics, occasional angels, and souls rescued from Hell; the earlier pagan world of the ancient, giant Fenians and an array of Irish kings; and the timeless Otherworld, peopled by ever-young, shape-shifting fairies. The 'Tales' dwell in detail on the inhabitants of the Irish Otherworld and provide an extensive account of their music and magic, their internicine wars and their malice toward, and infatuation with, humankind - themes that still feature in the storytelling of present-day Ireland. This excellent new translation is based on existing manuscript sources and is richly annotated, looking at the 'Acallam's' place in Irish tradition and its wider literary impact."
