2 Aiken, Conrad. SELECTED POEMS.
New York Charles Scribner's Sons 1929 First, limited edition. Hard Cover Fair Signed by Author
361 pp, 8 1/2" H. Green cloth spine with gilt lettering/decorative banding, patterned paper-covered boards. *Lacking the publisher's slipcase.* No. 3 of 210 copies, numbered and signed by Conrad Aiken on the limitation page. Aiken was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for 'Selected Poems' in 1930. Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "For Adrianne / on the way to / Hollywood / from / Philip Merivale / March : 1932". Philip Merivale was born in India, began his acting and screenwriting career in England, later moving to Los Angeles. This book is from the library of the actor Raymond Massey and we presume the 'Adrianne' of the dedication was Massey's first wife, Adrianne Allen (m.1929-1939). Ms. Allen is perhaps best known for her role in Noel Coward's 'Private Lives'. Following her divorce from Massey, Ms. Allen married American lawyer, William Dwight Whitney (and Massey married Whitney's ex-wife). In 1957 she joined her daughter, Anna Massey and Philip Merivale's son, John Merivale, in the Broadway production "The Reluctant Debutante", playing Sheila Broadbent, mother of the character played by Anna. Many pages have not been opened and others have rough edges from opening, several edge tears (archivally taped) or pieces missing from margins/corners between pages 329 & 336 - no text missing, age darkening to edges of text block - especially top of text block, moderate to heavy edge wear to boards - more at corners, browning to spine, light browning and some thin brown stains on boards, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, line dent across bottom of text block, small bump at top edge of rear board.

160 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H) hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated in color and b&w. "This well-illustrated collector's guide covers a wide range of nautical decorative arts and naviational instruments. The book spans the period from the sixteenth century to the present day with an emphasis on the golden age of production between 1800 and 1940. These more modern pieces are readily found in specialist shops and auctions and are therefore more affordable than earlier and rarer pieces. The book is divided into eight chapters, covering ship models, navigational instruments, ship fixtures and fittings, marine arts and crafts, ocean liner artefacts and ship portrait painting. A concluding chapter lists public and private collections where marine art can be seen and provides information on its purchase internationally. 5 Bayne-Powell, Rosamond. HOUSEKEEPING IN THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY. (18th CENTURY.)
London John Murray 1956 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good
208 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w illustrations. "Decorations, furniture, pictures, china, linen, the kitchen, food, drink, entertaining, washing, sanitation, heating, lighting, servants, illness, remedies, handicrafts, money, taxation and household superstitions and customs - all, so to speak, bring grist to the author's mill and the result is a graphic and convincing presentment of life in the period. The 'good old days' may have been enjoyable for those with plenty of money and good health, for the sick and poor much of life must have been horrible, the squalor behind the grandeur, the dirt underneath the cloth of gold - but how gracious and artistic the great houses were." Light stain on page leaf 111/112, five faint line marks on fore-edge of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light browning on spine and flap-folds, light edge wear, several small and tiny edge chips, several cup ring stains/impressions on front panel, protected in a mylar sleeve.

New York Sun DIAL 1940 Reprint Hard Cover Good+ Fair
408 pp, 7 3/4" H. Bright orange cloth with decorative black title block on spine, top edge orange. "When they broke into the inner chamber of the tomb, the first thing they saw was a throne of yellowed ivory poised on lion's legs and claws of gold. On it sat a figure, a figure of some queen of ancient Egypt, her youth and breath-taking beauty preserved for centuries in the sealed silence of the vault. Suddenly a thin shaft of sunlight trickled in through the blackness and the beautiful image vanished, disintegrated before their eyes into a small pile of dust. The miraculously preserved body was gone, but in the incredible, turbulent weeks that followed Miles Seton could never lose the memory of that marble-white face, the deep repose of the features and the faint, faint smile which touched the mouth - . Shifting from the musty, century-laden atmosphere of an Egyptian tomb to the garish, colorful atmos-phere of modern India this fascinating novel tells the strange story of a love that defied time and space itself, the story of a queen of prehistoric Egypt brought to life in the twentieth century. (The author) has a deep understanding of oriental mysticism and this engrossing story provides a vivid picture of Indian philosophy and thought with all its mystic beauty and curious logic. (This) is indeed a skillful, exciting blending of the spiritual and the material." Book is slightly cocked, has previous owner's bookplate on front free endpaper, small label from bookstore on front pastedown, light browning to endpapers, light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor color fading on top of text block. Dust jacket has several edge tears and chips, fading to spine and front flap-fold color, small old tape mark on front panel, front flap fold is archivally taped, now protected in a mylar sleeve.

11 Crane, Walter. OF THE DECORATIVE ILLUSTRATION OF BOOKS OLD AND NEW.
London Bracken 1984 0946495416 / 9780946495412 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good
243 pp, 8vo (8" H). B&w illustrations. "Originally published in 1896, this survey of book illustration is both a comprehensive guide to many facets of early work in the field and important evidence of Victorian taste and the influences which shaped it. Walter Crane, as a leading designer and illustrator, was exceptionally well placed to survey the subject - indeed, some of the finest pieces among over 100 drawings reproduced here are those by Crane himself. Crane begins by describing the artist's role in producing manuscripts and early printed books up to the end of the sixteenth century, giving an account of Italian, French and (particularly) German work. He then moves to the beginning of 'modern illustration', which he dates from the work of Blake, and takes in most of the major Victorian exponents of the art, with examples from such men as Rossetti, Selwyn Image, Arthur Hughes, Laurence Housman, Howard Pyle and Will H. Bradley. The result is a book which has delighted the collector for many years, and is now in increasing demand among art historians and typographers." Faint erased pencil mark on front free endpaper, light browning in margins of pages and to edges of text block, light wrinkling at fore-edge of pages 32 to 44 with two very small tears on fore-edge of pages 37 to 40 that are archivally taped. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

252 pp, 13 1/2" H. Brown cloth with gilt lettering on spine, pictorial endpapers. In publisher's original plain cardboard slipcase. B&w and colour reproductions. "(A) stunning exhibition of the city's mag-nificent art treasures. Compiled by the directors of Prague's National Museum and National Gallery, this important and eye-filling work is a rich cornucopia which art historians, students of central Europe, and travelers to the historic city may sample with profit and pleasure. Itself an art treasure with its ancient buildings, historic monuments, and panoramic views, 'the city of a hundred towers' is home to notable collections of paintings, drawings, sculpture, and objects d'art dating from Charles IV and even earlier. Reflecting Prague's position at the heart of Europe along centuries-old trade routes, these collections encompass the continent's many schools of art, architecture, and handicrafts and repre-sent a distillation of Prague's turbulent thousand-year history. Modern scholarship, including some extraordinary scholarly detective work on the Prague Castle Gallery collection, has uncovered, restored, and made available to experts and public alike many little-known treasures. Equally impressive are collections of early art, coins, astronomical instruments, and Bohemian and modern Czechoslovak glass and porcelain. History of church and state can be glimpsed in the art of stone-cutters, goldsmith and silversmiths, weavers and embroiderers, and masters of illuminated manu-scripts." 15 Erskine, John. UNFINISHED BUSINESS.
Indianapolis Bobbs-Merrill 1931 Hard Cover Very Good - Poor Inscribed By Author
347 pp, 8 1/8" H. Black cloth with red lettering and decorative borders on spine and front board, top edge stained red. Inscribed on front free endpaper: "For George Atkins - / old friend - / as a poor return for the / best apples I've met in / an age! / John Erskine / January, 1932 - ". "The car was moving fast but not too fast. You couldn't blame the driver. A tire exploded - . Before Ormer saw his friends again he stood before a Gate and heard the amazing dictum that scared him back to life: neither right nor wrong counts, but only their completion. The man alone is damned who fails to fulfil his intentions. But - cheating his partner. Seducing a girl. These were among the things that Ormer had begun. Now with his own salvation at stake he must return to complete them. In the twenty years that had passed, the partner had become the president of a powerful bank, the girl had become the wife of his faithful friend. And he knew he must return to face the Figure at the Gate. Most men and women carry about with them regrets vague or clearly articulated for the things they have not done. As we grow older we regret even the prudence which kept us from mistakes. Even from mistakes, we begin to feel, we might have learned more fully to live. This common experience is dramatized (here). Along with the regret for neglected opportunities to live goes usually a wish that we might return to past hours and complete what we left unfinished. Here is the story of a man who tried to make such a repetition of his life." Light toning to margins of pages; a few tiny foxing marks on preliminary pages, on rear pastesdown and on edges of text block; light edge wear/rubbing; wrinkling at top/bottom of spine; light corner bumps and two small bumps at bottom edge of front board; light browning to fore-edge and bottom of text block. 20 Freeman, John and Dormer, Peter. LONDON REVEALED. THE BEAUTIFUL, BIZARRE AND UNEXPECTED INTERIORS OF THE CAPITAL.
Macdonald, London, 1989, first edition.
240 pp, small 4to (10 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Beautifully and profusely illustrated with colour photographs. ISBN 0356175375 "John Freeman has spent a year investigating the worlds behind the closed doors of the Capital, unearthing an incredible variety of important interiors. The best and most exciting of these have been brought together in this book, revealing ninety unique views of London, many of which have been photographed here for the first time. The result is the mo s t authoritative and well-researched book on the hidden and unappreciated interiors of London, coveirng not only buildings from all periods of history but sites that represent many of the aspects of London life. Five thematic chapters put each in di vi d ual interior into context, making the book not only a stunning visual and descriptive account of the multifarious worlds inside London, but an important survey of London's architecture and design. The chapters include 'The Grand Scale', a s tud y o f the most opulent and grand interiors, with unusual angles on the well-known - such as the Albert Hall and Old Bailey - as well as impressive but less accessible sites such as the Granada Cinema at Tooting. 'Into the Twentieth Century' rev eals the i nnovative decors - successful or otherwise - of recent years; 'The Decorative Tradition' celebrates the richness of period and contemporary detailing in London; 'Moments Preserved' evokes not only nostalgia but wonders at the perfect pr eserv ation or restoration of a period room or moment in time (with a plea therefore for their further protection). 'Private Lives' explores the personal homes that have been transformed in traditional and eclectic styles by their owners, and als o prov ides g limp ses into private habitats, from the hallowed halls of the Reform Club to a Chelsea houseboat and even a 'taxi driver' eatery." This is a heavy volume which will require additional postage. Minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has min or wr inkling at top of spine and rear flap-fold, very minor rubbing.
