Michael Joseph, London, 1981, first edtion.
206 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0718120396 Charming b&w illustrations. "There is a growing need for the 'quiet fields' in this noisy, restless world. Mercifully, they can still be found by the country-lover and naturalist . This book tells of a year spent deep in the countryside, beginning when the year is young, when trees and hedges are bare to the winter winds, and on through the spring, summer and autumn, to winter once again. Whatever the season of t h e y e a r t h ere is always something to see in the countryside, even when the 'quiet fields' are sheeted with snow. There are the winter migrants - the wildfowl of the wet places, the delicate fieldfares and redwings - who come to Britain to e sc ap e t he b it t er t emperatures of their native lands. 'BB' also describes the advent of the spring migrants, which bring such intense joy to the naturalist that he even had to surrender his studio to a swallow family, which honoured him wi th a v is it and tw o l us ty bro ods of young. And the arrival of frogs at his Big Pond, the first for years, was a red-letter day in his calendar. There is still magic and a sense of peace in Britain's woods and fields. This book sets out to p rov e it , a nd the illu stra tio ns by D .J. Watkins-Pitchford echo exactly the spirit of the writing...." 4 Allen, Gillian. YESTERDAY'S TOWN: WELLINGTON. A DIARY OF A WEST COUNTRY TOWN IN THE 19th CENTURY.
Buckingham Barracuda 1987 0860232921 / 9780860232926 Limited Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
124 pp, small 4to (10 7/16" H). Number 368 of a limited edition. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "(I)t is the detail of the 19th century record which attracts us most; the people who lived in specific houses like the Millers, Langleys and Merediths; the controversy about the three posts outside the White Hart Inn; the shops that changed from bank to fishmonger, from watchmaker to cobbler, from Bell Inn to basketmaker; the man who dug a canal in his garden to employ poor people; the ten-year-old who died when her pinny caught fire; the horse that took nine men to the gallows. Here too is the fire brigade whose captain refused entry to his own team as his cottage blazed away; the riots when a cemetery was proposed; the earliest chapels built and closed; Ann Pain, who stole a bullock's heart on St. Valentine's Day; Mr Marks, who lost 50 Pounds at Wellington Fair; elderly Maria Strippling, sentenced to seven days' labour for pinching threepennorth of hay; and the 4,703 tramps who came to Wellington in 1865. Transport changed the town, when the turnpikes, canal, railway and finally motorcar came. The first car owner was heavily fined; the first acceptable motor hit the Town Hall. Taverns prospered, and there were 75 at one time or another. Thirteen survive. The greatest change of all came with the Great War - 'our old world has gone forever' said the local 'rag'. That world is recreated (here) - in a fluent, fascinating and fact-packed narrative and some 200 pictures, many of them rare, and most unique to this book." Book is slightly cocked. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top edge, a few small faint indentations on panels, minor rubbing.

London Unwin Hyman, London, (1987), Ist edition. 1987 0713526610 / 9780713526615 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
128 pp, 10 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs, reproductions, drawings. "(P)rovides a lively picture of contrasting courtly scenes through the ages. It takes us from the paralysingly formal Court of Queen Anne to the outlandish ostentation of fifty years later when the Prince of Wales's dancing feet twinkled with 30,000 Pounds worth of diamonds attached to his shoe buckles. It conjures up the social butterflies of the Victorian age and a young debutante in the 1920's having difficulty tucking the essential three white feathers into her fashionably bobbed hair style. The fairy tale dresses and gold encrusted uniforms described and illustrated in this book have echoed or defied the fashions of the world right up to the present day. The last debutante to be presented at Court left Buckingham Palace in 1958, but in ceremonies such as the State Opening of Parliament courtly costume and tradition still linger with us." Spine is slightly twisted, minor toning on pastedowns. Dust jacket has light wear at bottom of front flap-fold, light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of rear panel, very soft crease down rear panel.

'Veiled Treat' introduces us to several women - among them a radio announcer, a psychiatrist, a pharmacist, a civil engineer and the new deputy prime minister of A f g h a n i stan, Dr. Sima Samar - who describe their waking hell under the Taliban's repressive measures. Denied schooling, employment and adequate health care and confined to their homes unless accompanied by a male relative, women struggled to s ur vi ve . Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1988 0771007959 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
202 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "(T)he story of one of Ontario's and Canada's greatest judges, William Edward Middleton (1860-1948), who served as a justice of the Supreme Court of Ontario for thirty-three years, twenty-two of them as an appellate judge. At a time when a number of Supreme Court justices were belligerent to counsel and irascible toward their brother judges, Mr. Justice Middleton set a high standard of courtesy and civility that has carried on to the present day. Because (he) never sought attention or encouraged controversy, his contributions have been known heretofore only in legal circles. Yet here is a man whose written judgments are still cited fifty, sixty, even seventy years later, the judge who sat on 'the Great Stork Derby' case of the 1930s, and who decided which of the two litigious Kellogg brothers could sell his corn flakes in Canada. In addition, Middleton was a renowned botanist and legal scholar. The prison inmates of his Bible class knew him better and appreciated his exemplary character far more than the average citizen. (This book) is rich with anecdotage and presents important legal cases in a manner the general reader can understand and appreciate." Minor old tape residue at top/bottom edges of free endpapers, small corner crease on page 7, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, small ink mark on bottomm edge of both boards. It is in these frantic seconds that a sister, weighing her responsibilities and priorities, must make efficient, professional decisions - deci s i o n s w h ich could mean the difference between life and death. In her autobiography, Joan Ash contrasts her wartime nursing experiences in India with the National Health Service as she found it on her return in 1973. DIEPPE 1942: THE JUBILEE DISASTER., Atkin, Ronald.
14 Atkin, Ronald. DIEPPE 1942: THE JUBILEE DISASTER.
Macmillan, London, 1980, first edition.
306 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0333191870 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "At dawn on 19 August 1942, five thousand Allied soldiers landed at the French port of Dieppe in the first major test of the defence of the G erman-held coastline of Europe since Dunkirk. The codename given to the operation was 'Jubilee' and its aim was to capture Dieppe and the headlands which dominate the town, hold them for a few hours and provide the Allied war planners with t h e v i t a l information they needed about enemy preparedness for the Second Front demanded by the Russians to relieve their sorely-pressed armies in the East. In nine hours of carnage and horror 'Jubilee' became a disaster. A combination of ove r- ri g id p la nn ing, inadequate supporting firepower and - in the final hours before the raid - sheer bad luck, inflicted on the Allies one of their worst defeats in a war which was already going badly. British Commandos carried out the flank a tta cks a gai nst co ast al gun batteries which dominated the seaward approaches to Dieppe and one of these raids, led by Lord Lovat, was spectacularly successful. But the assault on the port itself and the beaches on either side of Dieppe, the t ask of t he Cana dian 2nd Div ision, was a disastrous and bloody failure....Ronald Atkin has pieced together the full story of that day at Dieppe from all sides - British, Canadian, German and French - and from sources which include official docu ment s and re ports and most graph ic of all, the reminiscences of the men of both sides who planned and fought in Operation 'Jubilee'. The result is a masterly account of one of the most extraordinary - and tragic - episodes of the Second World War." 15 Atwood, Mae, editor. (Walter Traill.) IN RUPERT'S LAND: MEMOIRS OF WALTER TRAILL.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1970 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good
232 pp, 8 3/4" H. Map endpapers. "Here is a lively and informative history of Walter J.S. Traill, youngest son of the famous Canadian pioneer settler, Catharine Parr Traill. Born in 1847, (he) left home - near Lakefield in Canada West - at 19 and set out for Prince Rupert's Land as a clerk with the Hudson's Bay Company, and this book is a collection of authentic writings compiled from his letters and journals by his nephew's wife. He tells of the day-to-day life of the Hudson's Bay clerks, of the hardships, the loneliness. The colonists are often hungry, and he recounts occasions when they ate sled dogs to prevent starvation. Traill presents a picture of the Riel rebellion, as he was for a time, a prisoner of Riel in Fort Garry and only released on condition that he left the territory Being a loyal Hudson's Bay man, he is strongly antagonistic to Louis Riel, but the rest of his writing reveals an objectivity and broadmindedness that is astonishing for the Victorian era." A couple of pages with tiny corner crease, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, some rubbing and soiling - mainly on rear panel, a few tiny edge chips and tears, very light browning at edges and on spine.

128 pp, oblong large 8vo (9 1/2" H x 10 3/4" D). Decorated endpapers, profusely illustrated in color and b&w with photographs, reproductions. "Nothing captures the spirit of the Old West better than the jaunty tunes and classic ballads the cowboys and settlers sang, songs richly represented in this visually stunning volume. Panoramic in scope, the 45 songs, coupled with works of art from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, Cody, Wyoming, chronicle the stirring saga of westward expansion and reflect every facet of life during one of the most exciting periods in our nation's history. The lore of the West intrigued many artists, and the works featured include paintings and sculpture by Frederic Remington, Charles M. Russell, and N.C. Wyeth, as well as a myriad of fascinating artifacts: saddles, spurs, guns, guitars, a stagecoach ticket, a Navajo blanket, and other objects that provide a vivid picture of life in the West. A lively and intriguing text further illuminates this bygone world, exploring the history of the songs, their lyrics, the accompanying art, and the development of the West. The music, arranged for beginning to intermediate musicians and accompanied by chords for the guitar or banjo, is suitable for piano, organ, violin, or recorder."
