THE QUIET FIELDS., 'BB'. Illustrated by D.J. Watkins-Pitchford.

Michael Joseph, London, 1981, first edtion.
206 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0718120396 Charming b&w illustrations. "There is a growing need for the 'quiet fields' in this noisy, restless world. Mercifully, they can still be found by the country-lover and naturalist . This book tells of a year spent deep in the countryside, beginning when the year is young, when trees and hedges are bare to the winter winds, and on through the spring, summer and autumn, to winter once again. Whatever the season of t h e y e a r t h ere is always something to see in the countryside, even when the 'quiet fields' are sheeted with snow. There are the winter migrants - the wildfowl of the wet places, the delicate fieldfares and redwings - who come to Britain to e sc ap e t he b it t er t emperatures of their native lands. 'BB' also describes the advent of the spring migrants, which bring such intense joy to the naturalist that he even had to surrender his studio to a swallow family, which honoured him wi th a v is it and tw o l us ty bro ods of young. And the arrival of frogs at his Big Pond, the first for years, was a red-letter day in his calendar. There is still magic and a sense of peace in Britain's woods and fields. This book sets out to p rov e it , a nd the illu stra tio ns by D .J. Watkins-Pitchford echo exactly the spirit of the writing...." It may be anywhere you choose in the English countryside, because ' BB' has drawn a living picture of that sort of delightful old house among fields and woods, the ideal English home which thousands remember from their childhood or hope to have in that future for which they work and plan. The letters are w r i t t e n b y a countryman to a younger friend abroad and they describe the routine of country life throughout the months of the year as it engages an active man with a contemplative mind. They recount the discovery of the small signs of spri ng , th e de li gh t s of summer and long days spent in the open air, and the white beauty of the winter which the townsman hardly knows. ARMS & ARMOUR OF THE SAMURAI. (ARMOR.), Bottomley, I. and Hopson, A.P.
8 Bottomley, I. and Hopson, A.P. ARMS & ARMOUR OF THE SAMURAI. (ARMOR.)
Bison, London, 1988, first edition.
192 pp, 4to (12 1/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 086124415X Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w with photographs, reproductions, drawings. "A member of the aristocracy, from the tenth century the Samurai was primarily a mounted archer . This is reflected in the light, lamellar yoroi armour which left the right arm free for drawing his bow. Helmets were simple, with leather neckpieces. Battle began with an exchange of arrows, and was followed by a series of hand-to-han d c o m b a t s among champions who relied on the sword. The long wars of Kusonoki and Ashikaga produced several changes in the nature of warfare. Fighting in wooded, mountainous countryside, hand-to-hand combat came into its own. The bulky yor oi wa s su pe rc ed ed by the lighter, less constricting do maru and the no dachi, a longer version of the naginata (glaive), was introduced. The renowned Samurai cult of the sword began in this period. The Samurai's most ornate and elaborate ar mou r da te s f rom th e T oku gawa era, and was probably not intended for use in actual battle. The long development of arms and armour in the Samurai's 700-year history is fully detailed in this handsome volume. Illustrated with over 300 photo grap hs , (i t) will be a we lcom e ad dition to the libraries of all military enthusiasts." 10 Cazort, Mimi, edited and with introduction by. Foreword By Dr. Rene Pomerleau. (Henry Alexander Carmichael Jackson.) MR JACKSON'S MUSHROOMS.
Ottawa National Gallery of Canada 1979 088884364X / 9780888843647 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Henry Alexander Carmichael Jackson.
161 pp, 13" H. "(T)he record of a Canadian naturalist and artist, Henry Jackson, elder brother of A.Y. Jackson. It is also his record of changes, both social and environmental, that took place in Montreal and the Quebec countryside during the Depression, the Second World War, and the period immediately following. It is finally a testament to the rich inner recources of a man who, with very little money and no formal education, celebrated the abundance and variety of the natural world around him. The forty-two full-colour plates, forty reproduced actual size, reveal Jackson's extraordinary eye for detail and total command of technique. His masterful colouring and delicacy of touch fully transcend the original documentary purposes of his works. The detailed notebooks carefully kept from 1927 to 1954 richly illustrate not only Jackson's genuine, almost escapist, love of nature, but also his deep affection for people, especially the countryfolk, among whom he lived and worked." Very small area of color loss on rear board cloth. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, one tiny dent on rear flap-fold, a few tiny edge tears.

222 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w drawings. "(When Kip) saw the old pioneer school on the Bay of Quinte that his parents proposed to make over for a summer home, something stirred his blood. What followed was actually the most wonderful summer he had ever experienced in all of his twelve years. It began when Kip heard there was an Indian Reserve nearby. Then he met Dan, the Indian boy, in the village general store. (This) is the story of his friendship with Dan, of his job in Mr. Mosely's greenhouse and his explor-ation of the countryside, and, above all, of the eventful canoe trip he and Dan take down the Trent Canal from Lakefield to Trenton. Their trail is strewn with adventures of all kinds, from their first camp-site when they hear the harsh voice in the dark, to the strange sounds at midnight on Spook Island, and the accident at Campbellford. The climax of the journey takes them in search of a pioneer ghost. Woven into the tale of summer adventures and Indian legends is Kip's longing for a dog and how he acquires Scout only to lose him again, but - there is a happy ending." Green was the p r o m i n e n t c olour of the Southern, on the stations, the coaches, the locomotive and even in the countryside around. Many Southern Branch Line trains were steam hauled long into the '50s and early '60s and the scenes in this book show this in t he f in al y ea rs of steam power."
