PAUL NASH: THE MASTER OF THE IMAGE, 1889-1946., Eates, Margot.
1 Eates, Margot. PAUL NASH: THE MASTER OF THE IMAGE, 1889-1946.
John Murray, London, 1973.
156 pp, 4to (11 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w and colour reproductions, b&w photographs. "Paul Nash was always a leading and often a controversial figure in modern English art. His complete integrity of vision, his sturdy individualism and his remarkable ability to evoke the indwelling spirit of his subject - a quiet woodland scene, a menacing prehistoric site, a strange 'objet trouve' or 'monster' bombers on the ground or in the air - set him somewhat apart from his contemporarie s. In its later phases his work was marked by a degree of intuitive vision which may well explain why he never adhered closely to any school or sought to found one himself. Despite this apparent isolation, or perhaps even because of it, his co n t r i bution to the art of the twentieth century was both vital and unique. No full scale study of his life and work has appeared for nearly twenty years and the Paul Nash Trustees felt that the time had come for a reappraisal of his achievement. Th ey a ccordingly invited Margot Eates, who had edited the 'Paul Nash Memorial Volume' and knew him well towards the end of his life to undertake this new, fully illustrated monograph. In it she traces Paul Nash's artistic development in relatio n to hi s b ackground and personality, and in a long appendix has attempted the difficult task of producing a workable chronology covering over one thousand of his recorded paintings and drawings." Slight musty odor to pages, small light dust mar k on b otto m of text block, a few tiny light marks on top of textblock, small heavy dent on front board - migrates lightly into first few pages. Dust jacket has light wrinkling on spine and parts of rear panel, small closed perforation on front p an el, l ight edge wrinkling at top edge, light wear/wrinkling with tiny tears/chips at top of hinges and flap-folds, rear panel color has light to moderate fading, slight browning and soiling. STUDENT AT THE GATES., Locke, Elsie.
3 Locke, Elsie. STUDENT AT THE GATES.
Christchurch, New Zealand Whitcoulls 1981 0723306583 / 9780723306580 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
180 pp, 8 5/8" H. B&w photographs. "The turbulent days in Auckland of the 1930s - the Depression riots, the specials, the jobless, the poverty, the political ferment - are the backdrop of these reminiscences by Elsie Locke. The story begins with the idyllic, tranquil life at Waiuku in the 1920s before the author began her brave struggle to put herself through university. She recounts the impact of Left-wing ideas on the intellectual community in those troubled times leading up to World War II, when hardship polarised opinion and there seemed to be only two choices - communism or fascism. Her own choice was made at this time, and she outlines the experiences which eventually led to her joining the Communist Party - an involvement which was to last more than twenty years. The Government of the day responded to the social unrest caused by the slump with measures which many saw as repressive. Many of the author's acquaintances went on to become some of (New Zealand's) best known literary names (and the) printing house of Bob Lowry was a seminal inlfuence, both political and literary, in those heady days when minds were being freed and it really seemed as if a better world could be built. Despite all this social and political ferment, opportunities for women remained severely limited. Among Elsie Locke's acquaintances were many women of flair and distinction who were not to achieve the prominence of their male peers. Threaded through this important social history is the author's own story, which in itself has the fascination of a survival narrative. How she coped is a story of pluck, independence and integrity." Slight bump at top of front hinge area, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light rubbing/soiling.

This Valley of Virginia community together with Washington and Lee University and the Virginia Military Institute, presents exceptionally fine examples of American architectural styles from the late eighteenth to the early twentieth century. A remarkable number of architects of national reputation, including Thomas U. Walter, Alexander Jackson Davis, and Bertram G. Goodhue, completed important work here. This new study places the noteworthy buildings and their designers within the context of the architectural development of the Valley region and assesses their role in the evolution of the nation's styles. CANADIAN ART IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY., Murray, Joan.
8 Murray, Joan. CANADIAN ART IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY.
Dundurn, Toronto, 1999, first printing.
272 pp, 4to (12 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1550023322 "This book is a survey of the richest, most controversial and perhaps most thoroughly confusing century in the whole history of the visual arts in Canada - the period from 1900 to the present. Mu rray shows how, beginning at the turn of the century, new directions in art emerged - starting with our early Modernists, among them Lauren Harris, Tom Thomson, and the Group of Seven. Today, Modernism has lost its dominance . A r t ists, critics, and the public alike are confronted by a scene of unprecedented variety and complexity. Murray discusses social and political events in combination with the cultural context: movements, ideas, attitudes, and styles; the imp or t an t gr oups in Canadian ar t, and major artists and their works. Fully documented, well-researched, and written with clarity and over three hundred illustrations in both colour and black-and-white, Murray's book is essential for understandin g C an a dia n art of (the twentieth) century. As an introduction, it is excellent in both its scope and intelligence." Light wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has some very minor edge wrinkling. Near Fine/Near Fine

San Francisco Night Shade Books 2012 1597804002 / 9781597804004 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+ Jacket art by Mark Nelson.
279 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). "1864. London is a city in transition. The Constantine Affliction - a strange malady that kills some of its victims and physically transforms others into the opposite sex - has spread scandal and upheaval through society. Scientific marvels and disasters, such as clockwork courtesans, the alchemical fires of Whitechapel, electric carriages, and acidic monsters lurking in the Thames, have forever altered the face of the city. Pembroke 'Pimm' Halliday is an aristocrat with an interest in criminology, who uses his keen powers of observation to assist the police or private individuals - at least when he's sober enough to do so. Ellie Skyler, who hides her gender behind the byline 'E. Skye', is an intrepid journalist driven by both passion and necessity to uncover the truth, no matter where it lies. When Pimm and Skye stumble onto a dark plot that links the city's most notorious criminal overlord with the Queen's new consort, famed scientist Sir Bertram Oswald, they soon find the forces of both high and low society arrayed against them. Can they save the city from the arcane machinations of one of history's most infamous monsters - and uncover the shocking origins of 'The Constantine Affliction'?" Very minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling, soft wrinkle at top of rear panel, minor rubbing.

10 Reid, Dennis. A CONCISE HISTORY OF CANADIAN PAINTING. SECOND (EXPANDED) EDITION.
Toronto Oxford University Press 1988 0195406648 / 9780195406641 Second (expanded) Edition. Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
418 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w and colour illustrations. "This Second Edition covers painting to 1980. A long final chapter treats a crucial fifteen years when there developed in Canada a tremendous interest in other art forms and an apparent falling off of interest in painting. In fact the cry was hear - throughout the western world - that painting was dead. It turned out, however, that this was far from true. Dennis Reid discusses the work of established artists who produced steadily in the period - including Jack Bush, Jack Chambers, Greg Curnoe, Gershon Iskowitz, John Meredith, Guido Molinari, Jack Shadbolt, and Claude Tousignant - as well as new arrivals on the scene who have since joined the ranks of leading Canadian artists. Among the more recent painters discussed are David Bolduc, John Boyle, David Craven, Paterson Ewen, Ivan Eyre, Yves Gaucher, John Hall, Ron Martin, Michael Morris, Norval Morrisseau, Christopher Pratt, Shirley Wiitasalo, and Tim Zuck. Enriched by this overview, and by many additions to the original text, (this) is the widest-ranging and most authoritiative handbook available. Lucid, interesting, and informative, it is still a pleasure to read from first to last." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very small bump on bottom edge of both boards. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

470 pp, 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs and maps/battle plans. "Antwerp, Leopold Canal, Woensdrecht, Breskens Pocket, Walcheren Island - these place names live on in the memories of World War Two veterans of Canadian infantry and armoured divisions who fought in the mud and wet against an unbending enemy. It was 1944 and the Canadian army, with divisions from the U.K., U.S., and Poland, had been given the difficult task of liberating the port of Antwerp and clearing both banks of the Scheldt River. The bitter Battle of the Scheldt lasted 86 days, and took the lives of more than 12,000 Allied soldiers. Brigadier General Denis Whitaker was a lieutenant-colonel in that battle, commanding the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry. For this book, he interviewed more than 150 men who fought alongside him on the Dutch polders. Meticulously researched in Europe and Canada, (this book) does not tread lightly on accepted notions of military historians. Revised with a new afterword, this important true story of nineteen- and twenty-year-old soldiers, many of whom died miserably on the sodden polders of Zeeland, deserves to be read again and again." One small corner bump. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at bottom of rear flap-fold.

David McKay, New York, 1973.
388 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "This volume brings together research being conducted on the foreign conflict behavior of nations from a linkage perspective. Foreign conflict behavior is viewed as an outcome of several pos sible inputs, among them domestic conflict behavior, domestic stress, level of economic development, as well as systemic considerations. Several essays which deal with the relationship between domestic and international behavior from a the o r e t i c a l perspective lay the groundwork for the data-based studies which then make up the core of the volume. Aggregate and event data are utilized in a variety of statistical models. The book concludes with exploratory work on domestic co nf li ct b eh av io r a s explained by external conditions."
