THE YOUNG ARDIZZONE: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL FRAGMENT., Ardizzone, Edward.
9 Ardizzone, Edward. THE YOUNG ARDIZZONE: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL FRAGMENT.
London Studio Vista 1970 289797721 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Edward Ardizzone.
144 pp, 10" H. "The story (Ardizzone) tells here is of his own childhood up to the time he started his career as an artist. Evoking a period as well as having a lot of fun remembering, it is fragmentary, charming and very much alive, sometimes because a particular character, escapade or adventure is sharply etched in his memory, sometimes, on the contrary, because the edges are blurred and the episode or person half-forgotten. Like his children's books, there are illustrations on every page, half of them in colour and half in black and white. Many of these drawings (which were all made specially for this book) are among his best work and together with the text they make up a unique 'autobiograpical fragment' - a kind of children's book for grown ups, which the publishers think that a great many children will also enjoy if their parents allow them to read it." Edward Ardizzone "is probably best-known and most-loved for the Tim and Lucy books which he wrote himself as well as illustrated." Bump at top of rear hinge, very light lean to spine. Dust jacket has wrinkling at top of spine and at top edge of front panel, light toning to spine and top of front panel - very light toning elsewhere, light wrinkling at bottom of spine and top/bottom of flap-folds.

128 pp, oblong large 8vo (9 1/2" H x 10 3/4" D). Decorated endpapers, profusely illustrated in color and b&w with photographs, reproductions. "Nothing captures the spirit of the Old West better than the jaunty tunes and classic ballads the cowboys and settlers sang, songs richly represented in this visually stunning volume. Panoramic in scope, the 45 songs, coupled with works of art from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, Cody, Wyoming, chronicle the stirring saga of westward expansion and reflect every facet of life during one of the most exciting periods in our nation's history. The lore of the West intrigued many artists, and the works featured include paintings and sculpture by Frederic Remington, Charles M. Russell, and N.C. Wyeth, as well as a myriad of fascinating artifacts: saddles, spurs, guns, guitars, a stagecoach ticket, a Navajo blanket, and other objects that provide a vivid picture of life in the West. A lively and intriguing text further illuminates this bygone world, exploring the history of the songs, their lyrics, the accompanying art, and the development of the West. The music, arranged for beginning to intermediate musicians and accompanied by chords for the guitar or banjo, is suitable for piano, organ, violin, or recorder." 447 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "(T)he compelling saga of an artistic genius, a ruthless railroad tycoon, and a sordid crime of passion. In frontier California 130 years ago, English immigrant Eadweard Muybridge managed to capture time and play it back on a screen, inventing stop-motion photography and moving pictures, breakthrough technologies that ushered in our age of visual media. Bankrolling his endeavor was tycoon (and former California governor) Leland Stanford, who built the west half of the transcontinental railroad and personally drove in the last golden spike. Stanford's particular obsession was whether the four hooves of a running horse ever left the ground all at once, and with Muybridge he found an answer. But personal disaster overshadowed Muybridge's remarkable achievements. A visionary artist, and technically brilliant, he was also a murderer." Very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Pictorial endpapers, b&w illustrations throughout text, plus tipped-in colour frontispiece and one other, followed by colour plates. Ludwig Bemelmans was famous for his 'Madeline' books. "A book to delight the spirit as well as the eye, 'My Life in Art' begins with the delectable world of Mr. Bemelmans' childhood on the shore of the Traunsee in Austria. The artist then recounts his misadventures in Paris where, painting meanwhile, he attempts to turn a ramshackle bistro into a smart cafe with the help of a famous restauranteur and a few clochards. It is in Ville d'Avray, in an old ruin converted into a studio, that (he) suffers the initial despairs and frustrations of painting with oils. His success in the medium is attested to by the many color reproductions in this book. The text, with its accompanying drawings, is 'about how and why and where they were painted,' says Mr. Bemelmans."
