LEGENDS OF THE SOUTH SEAS. THE WORLD OF THE POLYNESIANS SEEN THROUGH THEIR MYTHS AND LEGENDS, POETRY AND ART., Alpers, Antony.
1 Alpers, Antony. LEGENDS OF THE SOUTH SEAS. THE WORLD OF THE POLYNESIANS SEEN THROUGH THEIR MYTHS AND LEGENDS, POETRY AND ART.
London John Murray 1970 719519098 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
416 pp, large 8vo (9" H). Blue/green cloth boards with gold lettering/decoration on spine, gold decoration on front board. Map endpapers, b&w photographs and reproductions. "Antony Alpers has tried to discard all preconceived ideas and re-enter the world of the Polynesians as it was before Cook's arrival in 1769. By reconstructing their legends, myths, folktales and poetry in an immediate and convincing style he has let them speak for themselves. And in a long introduction that is a masterly compression of the Polynesians' whole way of life he cuts away our illusions and leaves us not only face to face with the islanders but with the way they saw themselves and the jewelled archipelagos in which they lived and sailed." Contains a preface, introduction and note on pronunciation and spelling, followed by groups of legends under the following headings: The Creation; The Heroes; Seven Ages in Thirteen Chants; The Marquesas, and Mangareva; Easter Island; Hawaiian Islands; Tongan Group; Samoa; Atolls and Outliers; New Zealand and the Chathams; 'From Darkness to Light'. These are followed by 'Notes on the Text and Illustrations', 'References' and 'Glossary and Index'. Very light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has slight edge browning, light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine, one small edge tear.

THE EMPIRE IS MARCHING: A STUDY OF THE MILITARY EFFORT OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE 1800-1945., Barclay, Glen St. J.
4 Barclay, Glen St. J. THE EMPIRE IS MARCHING: A STUDY OF THE MILITARY EFFORT OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE 1800-1945.
Weidenfeld & Nicolson, London, 1976, first edition.
276 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0297771256 B&w plates. "(A) study of the military strength of Britain and her Empire during the Boer War, First World War and Second World War. Dr Barclay evaluates the contributions of Aus tralia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa, and the changing roles played by the colonies during times of crisis. He explains British attitudes to colonial troops - Australian indiscipline and New Zealand thoroughness - and the lack of diplomacy on the part of British military leaders when dealing with their colonial counterparts. After the South Africa War the British government should have seen clearly the advantages of an Empire Military Force, but reports on empire defence from eminen t naval officers such as Fanshawe and Jellicoe were repeatedly ignored. The colonies themselves all reacted differently to the threat of war. Australia was often at odds with New Zealand - the former worried about defending her own vulnerable coa st line, the latter primarily concerned to maintain friendly relationships with Britain; Canada was slow to become involved - but Canadian troops were a stirring sight, well-disciplined fighting men who obeyed their superiors without question; South Af rica made little contribution to the war effort, although her Prime Minister, Jan Smuts, gained great favour with the British Government by always agreeing, in principle, to every new plan put forward by the British. Dr Barclay has written an o utst anding account of the achievements of the British Empire during the late nineteenth and twentieth century, using a vast number of published and unpublished sources." 8 Bartholomew, J.G. A LITERARY & HISTORICAL ATLAS OF AFRICA AND AUSTRALASIA. EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY NO. 662.
London J.M. Dent & Sons Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
218 pp, 6 7/8" H. No publication date, but an early edition as there is no mention of the First World War. Map endpapers and decorated title page. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w maps, plus 10 plates depicting coins. "The extent of the land and sea that (this book) covers, between the extremes of Algiers and Samoa, is immense in latitude and longitude; while in points of history it ranges from the oldest to the newest civilisation; as suggested by Karnak, or the new capital of Australia, Canbena (sic). Moreover, in accord with the general idea of these map-books, the effect of the map in illustrating history, the growth and multiplicity of peoples and cities, and the vast possibilities of unworked regions, is kept in sight throughout these pages. The record includes the wars that have passed, from Napoleon's Campain in Egypt of 1798 and General Gordon's last stand at Khartoum, to the battles of Spion Kop and Colenso, and the sieges of Ladysmith and Mafeking in the late South African War. It covers the routes of the great travellers, Mungo Park, Livingstone and Stanley; Stuart, Burke and Wills; and it touches at Vailima in order to recall Robert Louis Stevenson and his South Sea experiences, at the end of his days, as they are pictured by his Samoa book of 1892..." Slight fading to spine color, minor edge wear - tiny tear at top of spine, minor bumps at bottom edge of front cover, book lightly cracked in several places - book is sound, small split and very small piece missing at bottom of inside rear gutter, slight scattered color loss on top of text block. 190 pp, 8vo (8 13/16" H). B&w photographs, drawings. "Jean Batten is one of the great names in aviation history. She was born in New Zealand in 1909, a few weeks after Louis Bleriot flew the English Channel, and qualified for a flying licence at the London Aero Club in 1930. (This book) tells the story of (her) early life and of all her famous flights. The vivid descriptions of these flights, made nearly 50 years ago, highlight the hardships and dangers faced by the early aviators. Quite alone she flew immense distances in record times and in the most basic of aeroplanes. Not only did her flights create time records, but they also blazed the trail for the modern airline routes. The book is based on her earlier work 'My Life' 1938, but thoroughly revised and lengthened by the author without losing its period feel. Now, to a new generation of readers, used to sophisticated jet travel, her achievements will seem incredible. (A) gripping story of skill and courage written by one of the last great pioneer aviatiors." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, two tiny corner bumps small faint erased pencil marks at top of free front endpaper. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, minor edge browning, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds, minor rubbing.

310 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H). B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "With the call to action stations of August 1914, the Royal Navy faced its greatest test since the time of Nelson. He brings these sea battles dramatically to life, and confirms the Allied navies' vital contribution to victory. In his words, 'Though the titantic struggle on the Western Front dominated the strategy of the Allies, it was their Navies, of which the British was immeasurably the strongest, that in the end brought Germany to her knees.' Illustrated with maps, plans and contemporary photographs, this detailed, immaculately researched account is the authoritative history of an often overlooked but hugely important aspect of the First World War." 282 pp, lg 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs, maps. "The author was a squadron and wing intelligence officer and kept long and detailed diaries of the day to day life in the Desert Group, and on these the book is largely based. The result is a vivid and realistic picture of the Desert atmosphere; he commu-nicates the tenseness during the nights when the Wellingtons were away on missions, the crashes, the accidents, the debriefings, and the dreaded sandstorms. He recaptures the excitement of the perilous operations, some of which he flew on himself, as well as the lighter moments during stand downs and leave periods. This is an outstanding contribution to aviation history, conveying as it does not only individual heroisms but the corporateness of a squadron in wartime." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkle.
