PRAGUE WINTER: A PERSONAL STORY OF REMEMBRANCE AND WAR, 1937-1948., Albright, Madeleine. With Bill Woodward.
1 Albright, Madeleine. With Bill Woodward. PRAGUE WINTER: A PERSONAL STORY OF REMEMBRANCE AND WAR, 1937-1948.
New York Harper 2012 0062030310 / 9780062030313 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
467 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "(T)akes readers from the Bohemian capital's thousand-year-old castle to the bomb shelters of London, from the desolate prison ghetto of Terezin to the highest councils of European and American government. Albright reflects on her discovery of her family's Jewish heritage many decades after the war, on her Czech homeland's tangled history, and on the stark moral choices faced by her parents and their generation. Often relying on eyewitness descrip-tions, she tells the story of how millions of ordinary citizens were ripped from familiar surroundings and forced into new roles as exiled leaders and collaborators, victims and killers. These events of enormous complexity are nevertheless shaped by concepts familair to any growing child: fear, trust, adaptation, the search for identity, the pressure to conform, the quest for independence, and the difference between right and wrong. At once a deeply personal memoir and an incisive work of history, 'Prague Winter' serves as a guide to the future through the lessons of the past - as seen through the eyes of one of the international community's most respected and fascinating figures." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds.

3 Borawski, John. SECURITY FOR A NEW EUROPE: THE VIENNA NEGOTIATIONS ON CONFIDENCE- AND SECURITY-BUILDING MEASURES 1989-90, AND BEYOND.
London Brassey's (UK) 1992 1857530403 / 9781857530407 First English Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
235 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). "While the 'traditional' threat of East-West military confrontation appears much reduced, events in Yugoslavia have removed any complacency about the stability of the new Europe unfolding around us. New threats - territorial quarrels, nationalism, and the demise of the Soviet Union as a unitary state - require a radically new approach to European security. The creation of an effective security system will be highly dependent on the trust and co-operation between the former Warsaw Treaty Organisation countries and their new-found NATO allies. As their title suggests, the Vienna Negotiations on Confidence- and Security-Building Measures aimed to do exactly this, by fostering greater openness about military organisation and activity. John Borawski's history of the negotiations provides a detailed analysis of the issues involved, indicating the likely direction of future talks following the watershed March-July 1992 CSCE follow-up meeting in Helsinki, and highlighting their extreme relevance to the problems confronting European policy-makers today. As they continue to seek an alternative to the limited, hardware-based negotiations of the past, 'Security for a New Europe' grows in importance as a source of ideas for problems old and new." 395 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w illustrations. "(T)ells the story of a journey in the strange world of alleged apparitions, prophecies, miracles of healing, levitation, holy relics, weeping statues, stigmata and demonic possession. Cornwell follows the trail through Yugoslavia, Ireland, Spain, the United States, Canada, Italy and Britain, in search of proof of divine, or diabolical, intervention. He encounters the teenage Marian visionaries of Medjugorje, Sister Briege McKenna, the healing nun, and the ghostly influence of the stigmatic Padre Pio. He investigates the Shroud of Turin, the liquefaction of the blood of St Januarius in Naples, a Eucharistic miracle in the Bronx and a weeping plaque of the Virgin in Sicily. He describes a curious and sometimes sinister landscape inhabited by prophets, saints, charismatic political leaders and exorcists, and finds himself in conversation with Graham Greene, Professor A.J. Ayer and the distinguished Jesuit philosopher Father Frederick Copleston. Cornwell's journey culminates in an imaginative and original perspective that demonstrates the moral and spiritual benefits of popular mystical phenomena, while redeeming them from scientific debunking and fundamentalist literalism." THE SHARP END: A CANADIAN SOLDIER'S STORY., Davis, James R.
8 Davis, James R. THE SHARP END: A CANADIAN SOLDIER'S STORY.
Douglas & McIntyre, Vancouver, 1997.
270 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1550545884 B&w photographs, maps. "Through James Davis's eyes, we see the real face of Canada's army: efficient, technologically advanced - sometimes brutal. The uncompromising opinio ns Davis has about the strengths and weaknesses of our present-day military are backed up by his own first-hand experience at 'the sharp end' as a frontline soldier. The bungling and politically motivated actions of the Forces' senior ranks a n d t h e ir government masters, he states, chronically compromise the effectiveness of our fighting forces. Davis was at the defence of Sarajevo as centuries-old ethnic emnity between Serbs and Croats exploded into house-by-house guerilla warfa re . H e w as i n Rwanda as Hutus and Tutsis struggled for dominance. A former member of Canada's famed Airborne Regiment, Davis relives its emotional, controversial last days following revelations of misconduct by a handful of members in Somali a. T he st ory of hi s active duty is chilling but leavened with poignancy - hardened soldiers moved by the slaughter of children and innocents in the former Yugoslavia; an inspiring visit to a gorilla sanctuary in Rwanda, mere miles from horrifi c b loo dle tti ng. Dav is a lso portrays the daily challenges of making-do in Canada's diminished military forces and tells shocking anecdotes such as one about the 'Remembrance Day Massacre', when a poorly planned field exercise went terribly wro ng." Toronto University of Toronto Press 1982 0802055419 / 9780802055415 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
443 pp, 9 1/4" H. "The establishment of the United Nations system at the conclusion of the Second World War was followed by a period of disillusion in the late 40s about the prospects of world order. With the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950 there came a regrouping of forces and revised calculations of what was possible. The first volume of 'The Shaping of Peace' described Canadian attitudes and policies towards international institutions as the Second World War ended. This volume is concerned with the developments in the decade after the war, with the changing Canadian concepts as they were shaped by events and challenges. Although principal attention is paid to the organs of the United Nations, other themes such as the establishment of NATO, the progress of the new Commonwealth, and the changing concepts of the North American relationship are analysed as essential elements in the Canadian search for equilibrium." 17 Laffan, R.G.D. THE SERBS: THE GUARDIANS AT THE GATE.
Dorset, New York, 1989, reprint.
299 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0880294132 Maps. " 'The Serbs' was originally a series of lectures delivered by the renowned British historian R.G.D. Laffan. (His) lectures became so famous they were collected and publish ed in book form. Out of print for many years, (this) is the classic book on an important and misunderstood people. Too many of us only know the Serbs as precipitators of World War I, when a Serbian nationalist assassinated Austrian Archduke F r a n c i s Ferdinand in 1914 causing Austria to declare war. But Serbian history is eventful and filled with intrigue. To give us one example, (the author) brings to brilliant life the Turkish war with Serbia in which the great Serbian nobilit y w as n ea rl y annihilated, its lands distributed to the Turkish military aristocracy and the Serbian Christian peasants treated like slaves. All through this occupation the Serbs were forbidden to possess weapons, but an unquenchable desire fo r fre edo m l ed to fr equent insurrection. Finally the Treaty of Adrianople forced the Turks to evacuate. Anyone interested in a historical perpective of a great and heroic people will find (this book) as absorbing as it is inspiring. For, as Pr of esso r La ffan wr ite s ' the Serbs have shown that, despite adversity and homelessness, their spirit remains unconquerable'." 396 pp, 9 1/2" H. Maps. "(D)escribes the violent transformations that occurred in Salonica and hundreds of other towns and cities as the Ottoman, Russian, Austro-Hungarian, and German empires collapsed, to be reborn as the modern nation-states we know today. Lieberman's book is the first comprehensive history of this process that has involved the murder and forced migration of tens of millions of people. Drawing on eyewitness accounts, contemporary journalism, and diplomatic records, (his) story sweeps across the continent, taking the reader from ethnic cleansing's earliest beginnings in Bulgaria, Greece, and Russia in the nineteenth century, through the rise of nationalism, both world wars, the Armenian genocide, the Holocaust, and the rise and fall of the Soviet empire, to the breakup of Yugoslavia in the 1990s. Along the way he examines the decisive roles of political leaders - not only monarchs and dictators but also those who were democratically elected - as well as ordinary people who often required very little encouragement to rob and brutalize their neighbors, or who were simply caught up in the tide of history." 20 Lucas, James. Foreword by the Rt Hon Sir Bernard Braine. LAST DAYS OF THE THIRD REICH: THE COLLAPSE OF NAZI GERMANY, MAY 1945.
New York William Morrow 1986 Book Club (BCE/BOMC) Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
241 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H). "Buttressed by more than 100 maps and photographs, (this) is the first account of the fall of the Third Reich and what happened to its soldiers as the nations that had been forcibly made a part of Hitler's satanic empire exacted their retribution. Here are the stories of quite ordinary people over whom there swept a destructive war and who have not forgotten those events although they occurred more than forty years ago. There are not merely the stories of what happened to the Germans - who had made the mistake of starting a war and then losing it - but also the first-person recollections of people of other nations. On the Eastern Front, the fighting had taken on a dreadful, bitter aspect early on: Three years of intensive, epic conflict in which each side had seemingly tried to outdo the other in atrocity and terror had not prepared the ground for peace and reconciliation. In Germany, propaganda predictions of the horrors and brutalities of the Red Army were to prove all too true. The brutality of the Nazis would be fully paralleled by that of the conqueror. For the governors of Hitler's empire, their families, wives and children, escape from the approaching apocalypse meant running the gauntlet of now-confident partisans on the road to safety. But fear of reprisals was not confined to the vanquished. Exiles from Russia, anti-Communists, deserters, even ex-prisoners of war, knew well what hard fate awaited them in the cold heart of Russia. This compelling account fully captures the tension, turmoil and tragedy of the last days of the Third Reich."
