This extraordinary - and extraordinarily beautiful - volume introduces readers to a compendium of animal symbolism that ranks with the greatest of classical and medieval bestiaries. First published in France at the outbreak of World War II and nearly destroyed in the war's devastations, this masterpiece of scholarship has been translated and abridged (from its original thousand-page length) by D.M. Dooling, the founder and editorial director of 'Parabola: The Magazine of Myth and Tradition', and includes 400 woodcuts by the author." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Boston Houghton Mifflin 2001 0618103139 / 9780618103133 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Mary Azarian.
Unpaginated, 11 1/4" H. Beautifully illustrated in full color. "When they went into battle they wore no costly armor, just birchbark wrapped around their legs, and so they were called 'Birkebeiners', which means 'Birchleggers'. It is the year 1206, and deep in the snow-covered mountains and valleys of Norway, the fiercest warriors in the land struggle to ski a baby to safety. They race against the greed and inequity of the rich, against the very weather of Norway. They race as the only way to save a child prince and bring peace to their country. Here is an untold story of both bravery and tenderness. Mary Azarian's strong, sure woodcuts capture the warmth and ruggedness of medieval life, while Lise Lunge-Larsen's dramatic telling is direct and mesmerizing. Read this book on a dark winter's night, next to a roaring fire, and imagine the long, cold race of history's first famous skiers." A few tiny dints on bottom edge of boards. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top edge, small faint sticker mark on rear panel, minor rubbing.

When he dies, Yentl feels she no longer has a reason to remain in her village, and so, late one night, she cuts off her hair, dresses as a young man, and sets out to find a yeshiva where she can continue her studies and live secretly as a man. On the road she meets Avigdor, who invites her to come to his yeshiva. Yentl - now calling herself Anshel - agrees, and they study together. Avigdor suspects nothing and the two become close friends. Even so, Yentl begins to realize the folly of her actions: her quest for spiritual satisfaction has hopelessly entangled her in a life that is too emotionally and physically taxing to maintain. She must choose to live with her impossible situation or reveal herself and risk losing Avigdor forever." Dust jacket is price clipped, has minor edge wrinkling.

VERSATILE YANKEE: THE ART OF JONATHAN FISHER, 1768-1847., Winchester, Alice.
14 Winchester, Alice. VERSATILE YANKEE: THE ART OF JONATHAN FISHER, 1768-1847.
Princeton Pyne Press 1973 878610510 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Jonathan Fisher.
29 pp + 40 plates (printed on one side of leaf, captions facing), + (9) pp List of Works, 12 1/4" H. Colour plates plus additional b&w illustrations. The Reverend Jonathan Fisher of Blue Hill, Maine "was a universal man - inventor, farmer, architect and builder, surveyor, linguist, naturalist. Above all he was an artist, translating his vision of the goodness and orderliness of God's creation into paintings and woodcuts. Made for his own enjoyment and that of his family and a few friends, Fisher's paintings have largely been preserved in the small community where he lived and worked for forty years. This book, while it reveals Fisher's many-sided personality, is basically devoted to illustrating his work. The majority of his paintings are published here for the first time - the water colors from his notebooks, begun when he was an undergraduate at Harvard, and lovingly bound with his own hands; a selection of his most important paintings in oil; and many of the woodcuts with which he illustrated his books. Here, carefully recorded, with straight-forward and painstaking realism, are Fisher's college and his village, the fruits of his garden, and the animals and birds of field and forest. No subject is too small to engage his interest, none too dry to be transformed by his imagination. The common house fly and a wondrous carrot are fully detailed; garlands of fruits and flowers run riot through his mathematical exercises." Previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown, minor twist to spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling, three edge tears archivally taped, very light rubbing, several light scratches on rear panel.
