A.Y.'S CANADA., Groves, Naomi Jackson.
3 Groves, Naomi Jackson. A.Y.'S CANADA.
Toronto Clarke, Irwin 1968 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good A.Y. Jackson. Signed by artist and author.
248 pp, oblong small 4to (10 1/4" H x 12 1/8" D x 1 3/16" W). Signed on half title page by artist and author: "A Y. Jackson / Naomi Jackson Groves." Pictorial endpapers, reproductions of over 100 monotone pencil drawings by A.Y. Jackson. "We follow the artist on his travels across the wide stretches of snow and ice of the eastern Arctic, down through the small fishing villages of the Maritimes, around the Gaspe and through the winding streets of Quebec's citadel city. He leads us across rural Ontario and into the thick wilderness of Algoma, across the sweeping Prairies to the Rockies, and into the lush vegetation of the Northwest Coast, on through the ghost towns of the Yukon, and so to the wide expanse of snow and ice of the Northwest Territories. The text is a perfect complement to the drawings. With exuberance and devotion to her subject, the author brings a wealth of historical and aesthetic information to each composition. In every case, the text is a valuable commentary on the pencil drawing, but it also has an individual life of its own. Joey Smallwood, the Halifax explosion, the Indian legends of Marius Barbeau, and the Group of Seven have a place here. So does documentation on the size, date and circumstances of each drawing, including passages from AY's letters and journals." Two minor tiny dents on bottom of text block. Dust jacket has very light to light edge wear at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, one very small edge tear (archivally taped) with soft crease, very small tear (archivally taped) and crease at top of rear flap fold, light rubbing - including a few tiny line indentations on rear panel, light edge wrinkling at top of rear flap area.

"Since its foundation in 1839, the Geneva factory (of Patek Philippe) has determined the appearance of each type of watch popular at the time, from pocket watches to table clocks and wrist watches. Countless patents have been developed there in order to substantially improve the reliability and precision of their timepieces. At international auctions, their individual models have always been amongst the most highly prized and sought after by collectors. This volume presents an important private collection with timepieces dating from 1923 to 1981. The exclusive focus of attention is on the most interesting chapter in the history of Patek Philippe's development: the so-called complicated wrist watches whose development was made possible by the firm's winding mechanism, patented in 1861. The various models are classified according to type of watch and date of production, and are accompanied by the essential technical data together with lavish use of illustrations." Contents: Patek Philippe: Collecting Quality; Patek Philippe: Technical and Stylistic Excellence on Your Wrist; Chronographs; Perpetual Calendar Watches with Chronographs; Calendar Watches; World Time Watches; Dual Time Zone Watches; Minute Repetition Watches; Bibliography; Short Chronology. 239 pp, square small 4to (10" x 10"), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0701131764 Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w photographs. "Here is a richly illustrated chronicle of some of England's most beautiful houses, built between 1240 and the early seventeenth century. Hidden in spectacular countryside, often at the end of long, narrow driveways, most are privately owned. Some are lived in by the families who built them hundreds of years ago. Before Christopher Simon Sykes' wo r k f o r this book, few of them had ever been written about or photographed. A medieval fortified manor, a timber-framed hall on a moated island, a seventeenth-century summer house nestling in a vast, ancient lime tree; winding turret stairs, m ul li o ne d wi n dows, priest holes, Great Halls with hammer beam roofs, superb plasterwork, stonework and panelling - these are some of the many treasures which (the author) has discovered and photographed for this delightful book." 11 Twichell, Heath. NORTHWEST EPIC: THE BUILDING OF THE ALASKA HIGHWAY.
New York St. Martin's Press 1992 0312077548 / 9780312077549 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
368 pp, 9 1/2" H. Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps. "(T)he panoramic story of the courageous U.S. Army Engineers and civilian contractors who toiled in the tense months after Pearl Harbor to build a 1,500-mile emergency supply line through the rugged Canadian Rockies to isolated military bases in Alaska. The construction of this winding gravel road - GI's called it the ALCAN - was very much an all-American adventure: blacks, whites, and natives working together under the harshest extremes of climate and terrain - racing to bolster Alaska's defenses and deter another Japanese attack on North American soil. The Alaska Highway - with its hundreds of bridges, chain of airfields, and oil refinery and pipeline system (known as CANOL) - opened to traffic in late 1942 and was in full use one year later. Though one of the greatest feats of twentieth-century macro-engineering, this huge project sparked as much protest as patriotism. Critics argued that the road was in the wrong place and would have little postwar value; a well-publicized investigation of CONOL's excesses gave a critical boost to the career of Senator Harry S. Truman." Very light wrinkling at top of spine, very small bump at top corner of both boards. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top of spine and flap-folds, light fading to spine color.
