4 Bata, Thomas J. With Sonja Sinclair. BATA: SHOEMAKER TO THE WORLD.
Toronto Stoddart 1990 0773724168 / 9780773724167 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
341 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "In 1932, when young Tom Bata watched his father's coffin being lowered into his grave, he silently promised to abide by the wishes expressed in his father's 'moral testament': that the Bata Shoe Company was to be treated not as a source of private wealth, but as a public trust, a means of improving the liviing standards within the community and providing customers with good value for their money. At the time, Tom had no idea of the challenges he would face in fulfilling that promise. Not only was he ill-equipped, at age eighteen, to step into the shoes of an acknowledged business genius, creator of the largest shoe manufacturing and retailing organization in the world. Worse than that, fate was about to deal him a series of painful blows. The subjugation of his homeland, Czechoslovakia, by the Nazis was followed by an acrimonious family rift, the expropriation by Communist regimes of all his holdings in Eastern and Central Europe and, in other parts of the world, economic and political upheavals that threatened the survival of the newly resuscitated Bata organization. Yet Bata actually thrived on the sudden change and adversity. From his new home base in Canada he built, this side of the Iron Curtain, a global empire that employs 70,000 people and plays an important part in the economies of many developing countries. (This) is the story of the man, his family and their business." Remainder mark (dot) on bottom of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and at top of rear flap, very light rubbing.

JOURNEY TO THE TRENCHES: THE LIFE OF ISAAC ROSENBERG 1890-1918., Cohen, Joseph.
8 Cohen, Joseph. JOURNEY TO THE TRENCHES: THE LIFE OF ISAAC ROSENBERG 1890-1918.
Robson, London, 1992.
224 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H), soft cover. ISBN 0860517969 B&w illustrations. "When Isaac Rosenberg was killed in action on the Western Front in April 1918, the world lost one of the most striking talents of that ill-fated generation. He differe d from Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon - the two poets with whom he is most often compared - in that his was a double-faceted gift: he was both poet and painter. Also, unlike the other celebrated war poets, he was a private in the ranks, g i v i n g his poetry its particular, harrowing perspective. This moving and definitive biography is a fitting tribute to Rosenberg's tragically short life. Born to impoverished Russian Jewish immigrants, he grew up in London's East End, and onl y en li st ed t o escape the grinding poverty of home. After a short period in camp, he was sent straight to the Somme battlefields. Dr Cohen's study is based on an exhaustive examination of Rosenberg's drawings, paintings, prose pieces, poetry, l ett ers an d p riv at e family papers, and a close collaboration with the poet's late sister who was for many years his literary executrix. It is a story fraught with anxious striving, unremitting deprivation and unmerited neglect - neglect whi ch unti l re cent ly d ogge d h is reputation despite acclaim from a number of eminent critics, among them F R Leavis, who wrote 'genius is the word for Rosenberg'." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - light fad ing to s pine color , min or ed ge w ear, soft crease at top of front cover, minor to light soiling on edges of text block, very light rubbing. Very Good

11 Cornwell, John. POWERS OF DARKNESS, POWERS OF LIGHT: TRAVELS IN SEARCH OF THE MIRACULOUS AND THE DEMONIC.
London Viking 1991 0670821039 / 9780670821037 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
395 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w illustrations. "(T)ells the story of a journey in the strange world of alleged apparitions, prophecies, miracles of healing, levitation, holy relics, weeping statues, stigmata and demonic possession. Cornwell follows the trail through Yugoslavia, Ireland, Spain, the United States, Canada, Italy and Britain, in search of proof of divine, or diabolical, intervention. He encounters the teenage Marian visionaries of Medjugorje, Sister Briege McKenna, the healing nun, and the ghostly influence of the stigmatic Padre Pio. He investigates the Shroud of Turin, the liquefaction of the blood of St Januarius in Naples, a Eucharistic miracle in the Bronx and a weeping plaque of the Virgin in Sicily. He describes a curious and sometimes sinister landscape inhabited by prophets, saints, charismatic political leaders and exorcists, and finds himself in conversation with Graham Greene, Professor A.J. Ayer and the distinguished Jesuit philosopher Father Frederick Copleston. Cornwell's journey culminates in an imaginative and original perspective that demonstrates the moral and spiritual benefits of popular mystical phenomena, while redeeming them from scientific debunking and fundamentalist literalism." Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top of spine and at bottom of front flap-fold, tiny scuff on spine, one tiny edge tear archivally taped.

12 Evans, A. Margaret and Barker, C.A.V. CENTURY ONE: A HISTORY OF THE ONTARIO VETERINARY ASSOCIATION, 1874-1974.
Guelph, Ontario Self-published 1976 0969069000 Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
516 pp, 9 1/4" H. Pictorial endpapers, b&w photographs. "Few people appreciate the significant contribution made by veterinarians to the economic importance of the livestock industry, the quality of small animals and the control of diseases affecting public health throughout Canada. The increasing value of such work is largely due to the efforts of the profession itself, particularly in the province of Ontario. Human survival still depends on animals and animal products. To that close relationship the veterinarian brings the benefits of modern science; his professional skill and integrity today defend the economic and physical well-being of all citizens. In a fast-flowing but detailed narrative, the authors review the early years of the O.V.A., its emphasis on high ethical and scientific standards and a long struggle for adequate statutory recognition. These advances have been closely linked to the remarkable role of the Ontario Veterinary College throughout the century. The book also traces the rise of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association to its position of national influence. In Canada, the profession is unique in that close collaboration with all levels of government is constantly required. The control and suppression of rabies is only one example - perhaps the best know to the public." Dust jacket has tiny tear/wrinkling at top of front hinge - archivally taped, minor soiling.

Toronto Queen's Printer 1984 0774389648 / 9780774389648 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
668 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The OPP came into existence (in 1909) with a total strength of fifty-one men, of whom forty-four were constables deployed across the vast province. By the end of World War I in 1918, only twenty-six constables were still serving with the force, but returning veterans were sought for enlistment with the provincials and the force grew, assuming every-increasing responsibilities for policing the province. Liquor law enforcement during the rumrunning days of the 1920s, and the creation of a highway patrol in 1930 played major parts in the evolution of the provincial police. The story of the OPP includes tales of murder, sabotage, corruption, and political influences. There were relief expeditions to the north in the wake of devastating forest fires, and confrontations with hoboes, harvesters, and loafers. Violent crimes, jail-breaks, war services, and industrial disputes all had to be contended with, and not a few members of the provincial police were killed in the performance of their duties over the years. 'Hepburn's Private Army' and 'Drew's Gestapo' gave rise to much criticism of the provincials, and embarrassing Royal Commissions did little to enhance the image or the morale of Ontario's finest. Despite the challenges to its continued existence, the OPP has emerged today as one of the finest, best equipped, and most brilliantly led police forces in the world." Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top edge..

THE CHANNEL ISLANDS. THE COUNTY BOOKS SERIES., Hooke, Wilfred D.
15 Hooke, Wilfred D. THE CHANNEL ISLANDS. THE COUNTY BOOKS SERIES.
Robert Hale, London, 1954, revised edition.
211 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, fold-out map at rear. "The Channel Islands are the oldest of Her Majesty's overseas possessions. Their self-governing status in the British Commonwealth is unique and through t heir long and often troubled history they have frequently played a part in world affairs that is out of all proportion with their size. In this book, which is illustrated from a profusion of well chosen photographs, the author has given an e r u d i t e portrait of the islands as they are at the present time. The day-to-day life of the islanders, the peculiarity of their institutions, customs and government are woven with the story of their past to form a fascinating picture. The r ea de r is s ho wn the beauty of the countryside with its prosperous agriculture and the grandeur of the towering cliffs and shares in the fascination of the little islets whose only inhabitants are the sea birds. The author....has lived in one o r o the r of the is lan d s almost all his life, becoming a Channel Islander by adoption at an early age. With the exception of a break for war service, he has devoted all the time he can spare from bookselling to the study of the islands, part icu larl y th ei r b ird life . H is enthusiasm as a field naturalist has taken him to every part of the larger islands and to most of the smaller reefs and rocks. The Channel Islands have received much publicity since their occupation by the Ger man Army durin g t he w ar, but f ew ac cou nts have presented such a comprehensive and readable story of an area that never fails to captivate for life all those who visit it." 16 Jack, Donald. Forewords by Pierre Berton and Martin M. Hoffman, M.D. ROGUES, REBELS, AND GENIUSES: THE STORY OF CANADIAN MEDICINE.
Toronto Doubleday Canada 1981 0385155751 / 9780385155755 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
662 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "(A) lively and absorbing account of more than 400 years of medicine in Canada, from the Indian shamans to the present day. Canadian doctors have made an enormous contribution to world medicine - their achievements range from the discovery of insulin to the development of the cobalt bomb. And the famouse names are here: Grenfell, Archibald, Osler, Bethune, Penfield, Selye, Banting. But, as Pierre Berton points out in his foreword, (this) is 'more than a history of Canadian medicine: in a curious way it is also a history of the Canadian nation. In his monumental examination of the place of doctors in our history, Donald Jack makes it clear that since Cartier's day medical men have been bound up in the development of the country - not only as practitioners but also as politicians, explorers, gadflies, soldiers, community leaders.' The author brings to his subject not only a depth of research but a novelist's eye for the dramatic, the humorous, and the eccentric. The medical men and women who appear in these pages, 'in their furs and shirtsleeves, bloodstained frock coats and sterilzed gowns, tell an intensely personal story of triumphant response to challenge; triumphant not least because their lives affirm the supreme value of the individual ego'." Wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor rubbing. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine, light rubbing, slight browning to top/bottom edges.

406 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs, map. "Marcus Garvey, George Padmore, Richard B. Moore, Amy Jacques Garvey, Cyril Briggs, Claude McKay, Claudia Jones, C.L.R. James, Stokely Carmichael - the roster of immigrants from the Carribean who have made a profound impact on the development of radical politics in the United States is extensive. In this magisterial and lavishly illustrated work, Winston James focuses on the twentieth century's first waves of migrants from the Caribbean and their contribution to political dissidence in America. Examining how the characteristics of the societies they left shaped their perceptions of the land to which they traveled, James draws sharp distinctions between Hispanic, Anglophone, and other non-Hispanic arrivals. He explores the interconnections between the Cuban independence struggle, Puerto Rican nationalism, Afro-American feminism, and black communism in the first turbulent decades of the twentieth century. He also provides fascinating insights into the peculiarities of Puerto Rican radicalism's impact in New York City and recounts the remarkable story of Afro-Cuban radicalism in Florida." 945 pp, 9 1/2" H. "This major effort of a large group of scholars working in the field of Canadian literature provides a comprehensive, up-to-date reference work on the English literary history of Canada. It will be invaluable as a source of information on authors, genres, and literary trends and influences. It is also a fascinating account, lively and well written, of the ways in which writers have over the centuries striven to record reactions to a powerful natural environment and to their society against the background of other literary traditions in English. This volume represents a positive attempt to give a history of Canada in terms of writings which deserve attention because of significant thought, form, and use of language; it also aims to contribute to criticism by offering reasons for singling out those works regarded as the best."
