FASTEST IN THE WORLD: THE SAGA OF CANADA'S REVOLUTIONARY HYDROFOILS., Boileau, John.
1 Boileau, John. FASTEST IN THE WORLD: THE SAGA OF CANADA'S REVOLUTIONARY HYDROFOILS.
Formac, Halifax, 2004.
96 pp, large 8vo (9 1/8" H), soft cover. ISBN 088780621X B&w and colour photographs. "In the search for the perfect flying machine, hydrofoils were born. In 1919, Alexander Graham Bell and his young collaborator, Casey Baldwin, broke a world spe ed record when their hydrofoil prototype, HD4, skimmed across Lake Bras d'Or at 61.5 knots. This book is a complete re-examination of the Canadian research into hydrofoil vessels in the twentieth century. It describes how Baldwin and his c o l l e a g u e s, generously supported by Mabel Bell and under the guidance of the great inventor, built and tested numerous prototypes until they finally succeeded in building a high-speed hydrofoil for the navy. By the end of the Second World Wa r, C an ad a ha d th e third largest navy in the world and was set to be at the forefront of anti-submarine warfare. The Bell-Baldwin research was the foundation of the development of a small, fast vessel that could patrol the oceans, protectin g t he Wes t f rom t he Co ld War menace. Author John Boileau introduces the team of naval architects and engineers who tested prototypes in Halifax Harbour during the 1950s and 1960s. Their efforts led to HMCS Bras d'Or, the ultra-modern hydrofoi l ve sse l th at e stab lis hed an oth er world record before it was mothballed. Like the Avro Arrow story, 'Fastest in the World' exposes how brilliant innovation is not a guarantee of success for Canadian designers." Fine

"Admirers of Don Breckon's unerring blend of a faultless eye for detail and an irresistible nosta lgia for the era of steam will need no prompting to acquire and treasure this beautifully produced book. It is all here: the shapely majesty of the locomotives (with the emphasis on the Great Western, but with all the Big Four well repres e n t e d ) , s e t in landscapes of a 'classical Constable calmness'; the stations, accurate in every evocative period detail; the hidden rituals of the engine shed; the porters, signalmen and passengers who were privileged to play their part in t hi s gl or io us p a no ra ma. The artist himself has provided the commentary, and Roger Malone has written an introduction full of delightful revelations of the life and work of a painter who, he says, 'reminds us of what we are missing in a worl d t ha t h as dis mis sed c har act er and individuality in favour of streamlined efficiency'." UNHERALDED VICTORY: THE DEFEAT OF THE VIET CONG AND THE NORTH VIETNAMESE ARMY 1961-1973., Woodruff, Mark W. Foreword by James L. Jones, General, U.S. Marine Corps.
6 Woodruff, Mark W. Foreword by James L. Jones, General, U.S. Marine Corps. UNHERALDED VICTORY: THE DEFEAT OF THE VIET CONG AND THE NORTH VIETNAMESE ARMY 1961-1973.
Vandamere Press, Arlington, VA, 1999, book club edition.
338 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0918339510 B&w photographs, maps, figures. "....history of the defeat of the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army at the hands of the American and Allied troops from 1961 through 1973. It ch ronicles, in detail, the virtual annihilation of the Viet Cong by the late 1960s. The book then recounts the first wholesale introduction of North Vietnamese Army troops onto the battlefield in 1964 and America's response - the landing of U . S . g r o u nd forces in early 1965. Battle by battle, from Ia Drang through Khe Sanh through Linebacker Operations, 'Unheralded Victory' presents a convincing and accurate picture of the American victory. Why is it then, that American and al li ed s uc c es se s ha ve not been publicized and, instead, such negative images of allied military involvement dominate the discourse? Much of this can be attributed to the very successful propaganda campaign run by Hanoi, often unwittingly aide d a nd abe tte d by wes te rn observers. (This book) looks at the myths this campaign created and debunks them one by one. It closely analyzes the morale of the troops, the attitudes of the American people about the war, the frequency of drug use, the 'f ragg ing' m urd ers, an d o ther myths which dominate the discourse on the war. In the process, (it) suggests a much more positive view of not just the outcome of the war, but also of American morale, competence, and performance. Finall y, th e bo ok lo oks a t w hy t his p ropa gand a campaign was so successful, and why it - and the myths it created - still dominate the histories and popular memories of the Vietnam War...."
