Toronto Pagurian Press 1978 0889320772 / 9780889320772 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Molly Lamb Bobak.
96 pp, 12 1/4" H. Beautifully illustrated with full-page reproductions of watercolours of flowers. "Molly Lamb Bobak was born in 1922, the daughter of H. Mortimer Lamb, art critic and art collector. Her father introduced her to art and artists at an early age - Emily Carr, Frederick Varley, A.Y. Jackson - and her mother instilled in her a love for nature and humble work. She grew up on the West Coast, attended the Vancouver School of Art when Jack Shadbolt was a teacher there, and joined the Canadian Women's Army Corps in 1942, eventually becoming Canada's only woman war artist. In London, she met Alex Colville, Lawren Harris, and Bruno Bobak, whom she married after the war. She and her husband returned to Canada and became an integral part of the Vancouver art scene in the 1950's. They won fellowships, lived in England for a time, and in 1960 moved to Fredericton where she has lived and painted ever since. 'Wild Flowers of Canada' is a very personal book. Friends, family, feelings are examined in the light of present maturity, and reminiscences of A.Y. Jackson, Kathleen Fenwick, Alex Colville, Charles Comfort, Douglas Duncan, Miller Brittain, Frederick Varley, Tom Thomson, David Milne, Donald Buchanan, and many others promient in the world of Canadian art add colour to a sensitive biography by one of Canada's great artists." 7 Firth, Edith G. TORONTO IN ART: 150 YEARS THROUGH ARTISTS' EYES.
Toronto Fitzhenry & Whiteside / City of Toronto 1983 0889027129 / 9780889027121 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
199 pp, 11 1/4" H. (B)rings together reproductions of over 170 paintings, drawings, watercolours and prints, in which 130 individual artists have interpreted aspects of the city of Toronto, from its incorporation in 1834 right up to the present day. Although organized in five chronological sections, it is not simply an illustrated history of the city. Rather it is a gallery of pictures accompanied by explanatory texts. Special emphasis has been given to new and unfamiliar material, and over 100 of the pictures in the book have never been reproduced before. Care has also been taken to reflect the ethnic, religious, social and cultural diversity of the city. The big names are here, among them such figures as Paul Kane, Sanford Fleming and Robert Harris from the Victorian period, several members of the Group of Seven, and more recent masters such as Jack Bush and David Milne. But here also are a host of less famous artists: some city residents, some passing visitors, some anonymous, some amateurs whose enthusiasm was greater than their talent. All, however, in their own ways, have made a vital contribution to our record of Toronto as it was and is." Minor scuff on bottom edge of front board, book slightly curved. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, very light edge wrinkling, three small edge tears archivally taped, slight waviness to back panel.

Vancouver Douglas & McIntyre 1989 088894666X / 9780888946669 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Toni Onley.
166 pp, 10 3/4" H. Colour and b&w illustrations - reproductions, photographs, maps. "Toni Onley made his first trip to the High Arctic in 1974 aboard a Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker, the CCGS Louis S. St. Laurent. He returned the following year, this time piloting his small flying boat on a 10,000 kilometre odyssey into the eastern Arctic from Vancouver, B.C. Eleven years later, he and poet Claude Peloquin boarded another coast guard vessel on a voyage to confirm Canada's cultural sovereignty in northern waters. During each of these trips, Onley kept a diary of his daily observations: the unexpected colour, the mysterious quality of the light, the meteoric changes in the weather, the way land and sea and sky converge to tease the eye. The diaries also make many allusions to historical events and environmental concerns, and provide a lively commentary on life abaord ship and in the air. As an artist, Onley found his paintings ready-made in a landscape stripped to its bare essentials. His three trips inspired more than 200 watercolours, prints, oils and pencil drawings, of which 122 are represented here. In these stunning works, Onley exhibits his characteristic skill with a watercolour brush, capturing the fleeting light and shadow and the fragile, vulnerable beauty of the far north." Tiny dent on top edge of front board and a very small dent on the bottom edge. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top edge, two tiny dents on front hinge.

18 Steele, Peter. THE MAN WHO MAPPED THE ARCTIC: THE INTREPID LIFE OF GEORGE BACK, FRANKLIN'S LIEUTENANT.
Vancouver Raincoast 2003 1551926482 / 9781551926483 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+ George Back
307 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Map endpapers, b&w maps, reproductions of drawings (by Back). "George Back went on three Arctic expeditions under Sir John Franklin, searching for the mythical Northwest Passage while opening up the vast barren lands of the Canadian north. But unlike Franklin, Back lived to tell his tales and left behind an inspirational legacy of journals, drawings, watercolours and maps. Back was one of nature's survivors. Just after he joined the British navy at the tender age of 11, he was taken prisoner by the French and spent five years in a Napoleonic citadel. Here he learnt to speak French, a skill that later helped smooth his passage with the hardy Canadian voyaguers. Exploration of the frozen north was then beset by appalling difficulties. There were rows with the Hudson's Bay Company, rations that failed to get through and, in extremis, cannibalism. But Back came through such trials with a joyous satisfaction. His crowning achievement was the discovery and descent of Canada's Great Fish River, now named the Back River. Not only did he shoot its 83 sets of rapids in a boat built on the spot, but on reaching the Arctic Ocean, he dragged the vessel back upstream as winter closed in. His final expedition almost led him to a watery grave off Southampton Island at the top of Hudson Bay, where his ship drifted for ten months in pack ice; the leaking wreck just made it to Ireland, where Back ran it onto a beach and collapsed. Five Arctic adventures had destroyed his health. Now an admiral, he retired, was knighted and died at the ripe old age of 82." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has some light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of spine and front flap fold.
