5 Hubbard, R.H., edited with introduction by. THOMAS DAVIES IN EARLY CANADA.
Oberson, n.p., 1972.
64 pp, oblong 8vo (8 1/4" H x 11 1/4" D), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with reproductions of Davies' works in colour and b&w. "When most people think of the early Canadian landscape they think of William Henry Bartlett. Actually, Bartlett was by no means the only painter in early Canada, nor was he the best. One of the earliest, and one of the best of them all, was Thomas Davies. Davies first came to Canada in the seventeen-fifties. He came again in the sixties and then again in the eighties. He came as a commissioned officer in the Royal Artillery. His job was to record the topography of the country for military purposes. But he did much more than that. He preserved for us an exact and faithful likeness of the people, the towns and above all the landscape of early Canada. Little was known of his work until 1953, when a collection of his views was sold at Christie's. Twenty of these were bought by the National Gallery of Canada, others by the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto. It is now possible for the first time to appreciate the remarkable quality of his work. His water-colours are brimful of authentic details of early life in Canada. And they possess a calm and vivid beauty seen nowhere else in Canadian landscapes of the period." Large "Canada Council label" on free front endpaper, book slightly cracked at one place, a few pages with approx. 4" crease/wrinkle near gutter - caused during manufacturing process, minor browning to edges of textblock. Dust jacket is price clipped, has a few small closed tears - one is taped, very light edge wear/wrinkling, minor browning to edges, minor soiling on rear panel. Very Good/Very Good

166 pp, 10 3/4" H. Colour and b&w illustrations - reproductions, photographs, maps. "Toni Onley made his first trip to the High Arctic in 1974 aboard a Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker, the CCGS Louis S. St. Laurent. He returned the following year, this time piloting his small flying boat on a 10,000 kilometre odyssey into the eastern Arctic from Vancouver, B.C. Eleven years later, he and poet Claude Peloquin boarded another coast guard vessel on a voyage to confirm Canada's cultural sovereignty in northern waters. During each of these trips, Onley kept a diary of his daily observations: the unexpected colour, the mysterious quality of the light, the meteoric changes in the weather, the way land and sea and sky converge to tease the eye. The diaries also make many allusions to historical events and environmental concerns, and provide a lively commentary on life abaord ship and in the air. As an artist, Onley found his paintings ready-made in a landscape stripped to its bare essentials. His three trips inspired more than 200 watercolours, prints, oils and pencil drawings, of which 122 are represented here. In these stunning works, Onley exhibits his characteristic skill with a watercolour brush, capturing the fleeting light and shadow and the fragile, vulnerable beauty of the far north." Tiny dent on top edge of front board and a very small dent on the bottom edge. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top edge, two tiny dents on front hinge.

VERSATILE YANKEE: THE ART OF JONATHAN FISHER, 1768-1847., Winchester, Alice.
15 Winchester, Alice. VERSATILE YANKEE: THE ART OF JONATHAN FISHER, 1768-1847.
Princeton Pyne Press 1973 878610510 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Jonathan Fisher.
29 pp + 40 plates (printed on one side of leaf, captions facing), + (9) pp List of Works, 12 1/4" H. Colour plates plus additional b&w illustrations. The Reverend Jonathan Fisher of Blue Hill, Maine "was a universal man - inventor, farmer, architect and builder, surveyor, linguist, naturalist. Above all he was an artist, translating his vision of the goodness and orderliness of God's creation into paintings and woodcuts. Made for his own enjoyment and that of his family and a few friends, Fisher's paintings have largely been preserved in the small community where he lived and worked for forty years. This book, while it reveals Fisher's many-sided personality, is basically devoted to illustrating his work. The majority of his paintings are published here for the first time - the water colors from his notebooks, begun when he was an undergraduate at Harvard, and lovingly bound with his own hands; a selection of his most important paintings in oil; and many of the woodcuts with which he illustrated his books. Here, carefully recorded, with straight-forward and painstaking realism, are Fisher's college and his village, the fruits of his garden, and the animals and birds of field and forest. No subject is too small to engage his interest, none too dry to be transformed by his imagination. The common house fly and a wondrous carrot are fully detailed; garlands of fruits and flowers run riot through his mathematical exercises." Previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown, minor twist to spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling, three edge tears archivally taped, very light rubbing, several light scratches on rear panel.
