First six volumes of the Myth Series - with the first four books in a publisher's slipcase - 6 3/4" H. 1. Another Fine Myth - 200 pp, 1984 3rd printing, ISBN 0441023606 - "Skeeve was a magician's apprentice, until an assassin hired by an ancient enemy struck and his master was dead. Skeeve suddenly found himself alone with Aahz, a purple-tongued demon the old magician had summoned from another dimension as a practical joke just before he was killed. Aahz had lost his powers, Skeeve had lost his job. So together, they set out through a universe populated by Deveels (or devils), Imps, dragons, unicorns and more, looking for a way to get even." 2. Myth Conceptions - 217 pp, 1986 5th printing, ISBN 0441555209 - "Skeeve was summoned to the court of Roderick the Fifth of Possiltum to audition for the position of Court Magician. Unfortunately for everyone, he got the job. How was Aahz going to help Skeeve defend a kindgom against the mightiest invading army in the world? With his pet dragon Gleep and bewitching green-haired Tanda standing by, Skeeve waited for Aahz to come up with a solution. The problem was, if they won they would be executed - and if they lost they would be killed. What kind of magik could beat those odds?" 3. Myth Directions - 202 pp, 1985 1st printing, ISBN 044155525X - "The Trophy was unique, no question. It was easily the ugliest object Skeeve had ever seen in any dimension. And before landing his job as Court Magician, young Skeeve had seen a thing or two. But Tanda wanted it - and, as a rule, whatever the beautiful Tanda wants, Tanda gets. The problem is, getting it will take more than luck. It will take all the talents of a young but gifted magician, a scaley but canny Pervect, and a charming demon not above a little interdimensional thievery." 4. Hit or Myth - 170 pp, 1985 4th printing, ISBN 0441338518 - "King Roderick takes a powder - leaving Skeeve in his place to marry his homicidal fiancee Hemlock and face the tender mercies of Bruce, the Mob's fairy godfather who wants Skeeve working for him - or not at all. On top of that, Aahz has taken a forced vacation, a two-ton demon has a crush of Skeeve, and both Possiltum and Deva are about to be invaded." 5. Mything Persons - 172 pp, 1987 2nd printing, ISBN 0441552765 - "(Skeeve's) partner Aahz has disappeared and it looks like foul play. Finding Aahz ought to be a snap for a talented magician like Skeeve, especially with a sassy apprentice and a dumb but brawny bodyguard along for the ride. The trouble is, they're sleuthing in another dimension: a strange and chilly realm where day is night and humans are considered monsters. Add a murder rap, a couple of vampires, and the fact that magic doesn't work here, and you've got a trio in real hot water!" 6. Little Myth Marker - 167 pp, 1987 1st printing, ISBN 0441484999 - "(Skeeve) bluffs his way into a high-stakes game of dragon poker and, by some miracle, wins. Then, still flush with luck, (he) heads straight for the king of dragon poker, the Sen-Sen Ante Kid. And with a pot of half a million, there'd better not be any myth-deals. But even if Skeeve can hold his own in a high-stakes game, there's still Markie. Left as a pint-sized IOU by a player who went broke, she conjures a house full of trouble every time she tries to cast a spell. And to top it off, jealous magicians have hired the notorious assassin, The Axe, to cut more than the deck - ." OTHER LOSSES: AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE MASS DEATHS OF GERMAN PRISONERS AT THE HANDS OF THE FRENCH AND AMERICANS AFTER WORLD WAR II., Bacque, James.
11 Bacque, James. OTHER LOSSES: AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE MASS DEATHS OF GERMAN PRISONERS AT THE HANDS OF THE FRENCH AND AMERICANS AFTER WORLD WAR II.
Toronto Stoddart 1989 0773722696 / 9780773722699 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
248 pp, 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs and drawings. "In the U.S. Army prison camps of western Germany at the end of World War II, almost four million German soldiers were held prisoner outdoors, in barbed-wire enclosures, with little or no food and water, for many months. The French Army, which took some 630,000 prisoners from the Americans to use as reparations labor, starved and mistreated them so badly that likely 250,000 died. In the American camps, at least 750,000 died. Most were soldiers of the Wehrmacht who surrendered on May 8, 1945, but many scores of thousands were women, children and old men. The deaths were simply listed as 'OTHER LOSSES". In painstaking, wide-ranging research, the author has interviewed hundreds of prisoners, guards and army officers and has amassed many thousands of pages of evidence from Army archives in Paris, Koblenz, London, Washington and Ottawa. He was ably assisted by senior U.S. Army historian Col. Ernest F. Fisher. How the public was fooled, the U.S. State Department co-opted, the International Committee of the Red Cross deceived, the press negated, the U.S. Senate neutered, books censored, archives destroyed and senior officials inveigled into the coverup - all this is outlined in a work that destroys the genial myths about Allied war aims and exposes the sources of cynical Cold War propaganda that blamed the Russians for all the deaths among these prisoners." Slight bump at top of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light browning at top/bottom edges of flaps, very light rubbing, tiny scuff on front panel.

THE GOLDEN PRINCESS., Baron, Alexander.
15 Baron, Alexander. THE GOLDEN PRINCESS.
Cape, London, 1954, first edition.
402 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "When Hernan Cortez landed in Mexico in 1519 he met an Indian slave girl, Marina, whose beauty and intelligence destined her to a remarkable career. Few records of her life exist, but she is still a l egendary figure among the people of Mexico. The background of her story is one of the most astonishing adventures in history, the conquest of the mighty Aztec empire by four hundred white men; an episode replete with the ingredients of roman c e - N a ture's barriers surmounted, feats of arms, fantastic stratagems, enemies overcome. In this novel, Alexander Baron sees Marina and Cortes not only as lovers but as adversaries in a terrible struggle. Cortes, one of history's classical h er oe s , i s de picted in all his power and glory, but the flaw in him, the seed of human weakness in the 'man of destiny', is laid bare. Against him stands Marina, primitive and untaught, but growing, with experience, in mental and moral stature; aw ake ni ng t o som ething to which her lover is blind - the human search for good - so that a conflict between them becomes inevitable. (The author's) approach to his theme is avowedly romantic. He believes that some aspects of the nature and dest iny of man ar e most truthfully revealed by the romantic vision. His novel abounds with big, vivid characters; but each of them is examined with insight, and is a unique, complex human being." Small bump to fore-edge of front board, one ver y sma ll c orn er b ump, v ery l ight edge wear and slight fading at top/bottom edge of spine. "A book to delight the spirit as well as the eye, 'My Life in Art' begins with the delectable world of Mr. Bemelmans' childhood on the shore of the Traunsee in Austria. The artist then recounts his misadventures in Paris where, painting meanwhile, he attempts to turn a ramshackle bistro into a smart cafe with the help of a famous restauranteur and a few clochards. It is in Ville d'Avray, in an old ruin converted into a studio, that (he) suffers the initial despairs and frustrations of painting with oils. His success in the medium is attested to by the many color reproductions in this book. The text, with its accompanying drawings, is 'about how and why and where they were painted,' says Mr. Bemelmans." Very light edge wear with a few tiny dents, four letter pen notation at top of front pastedown, light browning to edges of free endpapers. Dust jacket has light browning, a few small edge chips, is price-clipped, one or two small edge tears with creases, light soiling/rubbing, light water stains at top/bottom edge of spine.

20 Bemelmans, Ludwig. THE HIGH WORLD.
New York Harper & Brothers 1954 Hard Cover Very Good - Good- Ludwig Bemelmans.
113 pp, 9 1/4" H. Orange/brown cloth with white lettering on spine, blue illustration on front board. Blue & white pictorial endpapers, b&w drawings, colour plates. By the author/illustrator of the Madeline books. "High in the mountains of the Austrian Tyrol lived the Amrainer family. They lived in a cabin wedged in among the boulders, and their life was simple and happy. But one day the Amrainers' peaceful existence was disrupted. They had gone down to the little village to spend Christmas with their relatives, the Maybocks, who kept the inn - but as the two families were sitting down to enjoy their goose dinner, an imposing-looking gentleman arrived and began demanding their attention and ordering them about. Before many days the Amrainers learned why the official had come to the little village and they realized that his mission would destroy the tranquillity of their lives. It took a near catastrophe to make the Oberministerialrat change, but change for the better he did - his heart became warm and even the expression on his face changed - and once a man starts to have love for his fellow creatures and does good, he can but continue to do so." "The incidents revolving around the avalanche in (this book) are true and are based on an account of it told to Mr. Bemelmans by an officer of the Tyrolean Gendarmerie who took part in the rescue." Small Christmas gift inscription on verso of front free endpaper, light browning on inside hinges, light toning in margins of pages, slight fading to colour on spine and at board edges, very small worn area at top of spine, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine.
