NICHOLAS HILLIARD., Auerbach, Erna.
2 Auerbach, Erna. NICHOLAS HILLIARD.
Boston Boston Book & Art Shop 1964 Hard Cover Very Good Good+ Nicholas Hilliard.
352 pp, small 4to (10" H). Over 200 reproductions of Hilliard's work, mainly in b&w. "This is the first full-length monograph to be written on the life and work of Nicholas Hilliard who lived from 1547 to 1619. The first English-born painter to gain the status of an artist recognised by the English court, he was painter, limner, engraver and goldsmith to Queen Elizabeth I and later to James I, and is kown to have also painted portraits in oil, but it is difficult to attribute particular oil portraits to his hand. Hilliard's importance is not limited by his performance as a miniaturist, for the style of his miniatures had a major influence on the general trend of English painting, and dominated the manner of contemporary English portraiture, both life-size and miniature. (He) was equally eminent as a goldsmith and he practised this craft throughout his life. Much new biographical material has been found which establishes Hilliard as a great Elizabethan." Small bump to top corners of boards, minor browning to page edges. Dust jacket is moderately browned - mainly on inside surface, is price clipped, has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling - mainly to top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

BEYOND THE MYTH: THE STORY OF JOAN OF ARC., Brooks, Polly Schoyer.
3 Brooks, Polly Schoyer. BEYOND THE MYTH: THE STORY OF JOAN OF ARC.
New York J.B. Lippincott 1990 03973242257 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Signed by Author
176 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. Signed by author on half title page. "Inspired by her love for France, by her determination to see the rightful king rule, and especially by her private visions and voices, Joan (of Arc) overcame the doubts of everyone from her parents to the king himself. Within a year Joan led the French to a resounding victory at Orleans and made possible the coronation of Charles VII in the cathedral of Reims. But after her glorious triumph, conflicts in the French camp, bad advice, and perhaps Joan's own headstrong nature brought her to defeat and finally to imprisonment and trial for heresy and witchcraft. Burned as a witch by the English after what was largely a political trial, she was later cleared of heresy, and eventually canonized. She is now the most popular French heroine and saint. (The author) has sifted through the records of Joan's trial, examined the studies of major historians, and roamed the streets of Domremy to find out who Joan really was. Neither a cardboard saint nor - as few still think - a witch, Joan emerges as a lively, emotional, determined person who believed so strongly in her cause that she overcame every obstacle she faced. Here is a new Joan for a new generation ready to question old legends and to marvel again at her courage and faith." Part of a series of history books aimed at the teenage reader. Light wrinkling at top of spine, previous owner's signed bookplate on front pastedown. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds, a few small light line indentations on front panel and on rear flap, slight fading to spine color.

THE CANAL BUILDERS., Burton, Anthony.
4 Burton, Anthony. THE CANAL BUILDERS.
London Eyre Methuen 1972 413284107 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good+
230 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "(T)he story of the men who, in little more than half a century from 1760, created a network of canals that revolutionised transport and represent-ed the greatest achievement in civil engineering in Britain since the Romans. In those few years between the opening of the Bridgewater Canal in 1761 and the coming of the railways early in the nine-teenth century, tens of thousands of men were involved in canal construction. They came from all classes of society - from aristocratic promoters like the Duke of Bridgewater to Irish peasants who came to dig. This book is the first to deal exclusively with the canal builders and to try to place them in the context of the social, economic, and political world of the eighteenth century, and draws skilfuly on contemporary documents, newspapers, pamphlets, and letters." Burton follows the story through the promoters (like Josiah Wedgwood) and the financiers, to the engineers (including Brindley, Telford, Rennie, Jessop & Smeaton) and the 'navvies' who actually did the digging, "from Cornwall to the Highlands of Scotland". Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very light edge wear, a few very light rub lines on front board. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has very light edge wear/wrinkling, fading to spine color (title is still dark and legible), two small edge tears archivally taped, minor browning to inside top/bottom edges.

5 Byng, John, Viscount Torrington. Edited by Donald Adamson. RIDES ROUND BRITAIN.
London Folio Society 1996 Hard Cover Very Good Anne Hayward.
505 pp, 8vo (8" H). Bound in quarter orange-brown buckram, Ann Muir marbled paper boards; dark brown endpapers. Plain dark brown slipcase. Frontispiece and 25 half-page and smaller b&w engravings by Anne Hayward, 9 maps by Denys Baker. A countryman at heart, Byng travelled throughout Britain on horseback whenever his position at the Stamp Office would allow him to escape from London. As a chronicler of the eighteenth-century, "Byng travels with an observant though never a roving eye. At times it is the eye of the modern photo-journalist, as when he records a meeting with Humphrey Repton, visits Sarah Siddons in her dressing-room at Birmingham, or glimpses Warren Hastings changing horses on his way to Daylesford. At other times his eye is more like that of the self-taught but well-trained artist, as when he admires the flickering tapers of Yordas Cave or the Kentish hop-pickers working in all haste among the twinkling lights of the hopfields. At Cromford in Derbyshire the bustle and brilliance of Arkwright's great cotton 'manufactory' even blind him to what he basically regards as the horrors of creeping industrialism: 'The cotton mills,' he observes, 'seven storeys high and fill'd with inhabitants, remind me of a first-rate man of war and, when they are lighted up on a dark night, look most luminously beautiful.' As is now widely acknowledged, (Byng) is one of the greatest British travellers of the eighteenth or indeed of any century. Not only has he produced an excellent travel guide (as, in a way, he intended to do); his work is also a major contribution to the social history of England and Wales - and especially Welsh social history. (This book) is, finally, a masterpiece of social observation, written with as fine an eye for detail as Jane Austen's and (like Pepys diary) superb in its delineation of its author's own character." Some light rubbing to paper on boards. Slipcase has minor rubbing and one very small edge bump.

6 Erickson, Carolly. ROYAL PANOPLY: BRIEF LIVES OF THE ENGLISH MONARCHS.
New York St. Martin's Press, New York, 2006. 2006 0312316437 / 9780312316433 Hard Cover Fine Near Fine
351 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Colour and b&w plates. "(This book) replaces the stereotypic images with true multifaceted portraits, bringing each of England's rulers to fully fleshed life. Here is the puny Charles I, nervous, tense, and socially awkward; the frail, slight Richard II, melancholic and sad; the homosexual James I with his handsome favorites; the stuttering William II and the stammering George VI. Here also is the choleric, violent William I (William the Conqueror), bred among the chaos of constant warfare in his native Normandy, ceaselessly embattled once he became King of England. The unkingly Henry III, mild and charitable, despised by his barons for his weakness. And the well-meaning, deeply affectionate Queen Anne, whose many children all died before they could reach adulthood and who was so heavy and gout-ridden that she had to be carried to her coronation. Each ruler's life has a unique story, and 'Royal Panoply' tells that story with award-winning historian Carolly Erickson's characteristic blend of scholarly authenticity, engaging prose, and psychological insight. The focus is not merely on the tale of each reign, but on each king's or queen's entire life, for some rulers did not come to the throne until middle age, and had already led full lives before their accession. Here they are in full panoply: feudal warriors, Renaissance icons, Regency dandies, and modern constitutional monarchs, fascinating characters all." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

16 Neillands, Robin. THE WARS OF THE ROSES.
London Brockhampton 1999 1860199976 / 9781860199974 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
223 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, maps, genealogical table. "The vicious wars between the English noble houses of York and Lancaster marked the end of medieval England and the birth of the Renaissance. The end of that thirty-year period of strife and bloodshed, which succeeding generations have called the Wars of the Roses, saw the collapse of the great Plantagenet dynasty, rulers of all England and much of France for over three hundred years, and the rise of the Tudors, destined to dominate English political life during the next century, following the triumph of Henry Tudor over Richard III at Bosworth Field. Robin Neillands tells this tale in clear and uncomplicated language, unravelling a fascinating and complex story to bring this period in England's history vividly to life. He also investigates the mysteries concerning the sudden marriage of Edward IV, the seizure of Edward's throne by his brother Richard of Gloucester and the murder of Richard's nephews, the Princes in the Tower."

227 pp, 12mo (7" H), red cloth spine with lettering/border in gold, cream paper-covered boards reproducing the illustration from the dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "For this, the second volume in Milestones in Children's Literature, Victor E. Neuburg has written an admirable study of the famous 'penny histories' or chapbooks which formed almost the entire reading matter of the poorer people in eighteenth-century England. At a time when children's literature had a strong religious and didactic basis, these little paperbound books, however crudely produced and illustrated, kept alive traditional tales of romance and adventure, and fed the imagination of young and old alike. Facsimiles of seven of the 'penny histories' are included in the present volume, and there is a detailed bibliography of source material." The chapbooks included in facsimile reproduction are: The History of Guy of Warwick; Fairy Stories; The Interesting Story of the Children in the Wood; An Elegy on the Death and Burial of Cock Robin; A Peep at the Various Nations of the World; Toads and Diamonds; The Rod. Includes a section on chapbooks in America. Tiny mark on verso of free front endpaper, minor wrinkling at bottom of spine, minor edge wear. ISBN 0901897191 "Externally, the Fishermen's Chapel is a plain, rectangular structure with no sign of ornamentation or suggestion of the glory that it holds within. But once inside, the visitor is confronted with an experience of unparalleled delight: the walls and the stone-vaulted ceiling are covered with Old and New Testament scenes, executed in bright colours. For more than six hundred years these medieval paintings have survived the ravages of time and man, and although they are now far from complete, their impact is nevertheless stunning: the message they conveyed to medieval worshippers is still there to be read today. Between 1982 and 1988, an integrated programme of research and investigation, conservation and repair, refurbishment and revitalization, took place with an interdisciplinary and internationally recruited team. The results of their findings have now been distilled and are presented in this volume." London Folio Society 1966 Hard Cover Good

Decorated endpapers, colour plates (including frontispiece), b&w maps/battle plans, fold-out genealogical table at rear (before index). Blue/gray slipcase. "The span of history covered by the Hundred Years War is one of constant interest for the social as well as the military and political historian. In this volume the story of the war is told by means of passages translated from three French chroniclers who between them cover its whole duration; they are chroniclers rather than historians, yet where questions of social or political interest seem to be passed over the answers can sometimes be gleaned from the text. The extracts here given contain about one-fifteenth part of the original chronicles, and are linked by a connecting narrative which deals also with political issues."
