7 MacKenzie, Lewis. PEACEKEEPER: THE ROAD TO SARAJEVO.
Vancouver Douglas & McIntyre 1993 155054098X / 9781550540987 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
345 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps. "Brave, tough, resourceful, and, rarest of all, blessed with an irreverent sense of humour, (Major-General Lewis) MacKenzie needed all those qualities for the biggest assignment of his military career: striving for peace among the warring factions in the former Yugoslavia. In this riveting memoir, MacKenzie describes how he created Sector Sarajevo, and with a 30-nation UN force set out to liberate the airport to receive desperately needed food and medical supplies. MacKenzie's outstanding and unorthodox leadership catapulted him to the status of an international celebrity, as he used the media - 'the only weapon I had' - to maximum advantage. Against the daily drama of shelling, sabotage, murder and shameless propaganda, motivated by ethnic hatreds, MacKenzie's adventures in Sarajevo read like a war novel - except that it is all tragically true. With the verve of a natural storyteller, (he) also recounts the often bizarre highlights of eight previous peacekeeping tours in the Middle East, Cyprus and Vietnam. From bluffing his way through the Turkish-Cypriot lines to boisterous forays into Saigon's netherworld; from basketball in the Gaza Strip to dodging sniper fire in Sarajevo; from daring diplomatic improvisations to bluntly outspoken criticisms of the UN bureaucracy: here is a veteran peackeeper's frank, funny and unforgettable story." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine/front hinge. Dust jacket has minor rubbing, tiny tear and wrinkling at bottom of front hinge/front panel.

CORONATION: A HISTORY OF KINGSHIP AND THE BRITISH MONARCHY., Strong, Roy.
14 Strong, Roy. CORONATION: A HISTORY OF KINGSHIP AND THE BRITISH MONARCHY.
HarperCollins, London, 2005, first edition.
556 pp, small 4to (10" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0007160542 Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs, reproductions. "As a boy of sixteen, Roy Strong watched the grand procession carrying Queen Elizabeth II to her coronatio n. The spectacle was considered the greatest public event of the century. But now, several years later, many people have little notion of what a coronation is and are unaware of the rich resonances of the ritual, or its deep significance i n t e r m s of the committal of monarch to people. This book is the first of its kind - a comprehensive history to set each coronation into its political, social, religious and cultural context. The story is one of constant re-invention as the s er v ic e ha s ha d to respond to the changes in fortune of the monarchy and the country, everything from legitimising usurpers to reconciling a Catholic rite to the tenets of Protestantism. It had to be recreated from scratch after the restoratio n o f Cha rl es II in 1 660. By telling the story of each coronation in turn, Roy Strong recounts the history of British monarchy since the 10th century, and looks forward to the coronation of Prince Charles. The ceremony's musical history alone is on e of ex tra ord inar y r ichness - involving Henry Purcell, Handel, Edward Elgar and William Walton. The celebratory poetry, art and spectacular engravings published at coronations are all explored, as is the more recent role of photographe rs. Me ticul ousl y re sear ched, wit h rich visual material, including illuminated manuscripts, engravings, portraits, photographs and television stills, this will be the definitive book for many years to come." Very light wrinkling at top/botto m of spi ne, sm all a rea o f soi ling a t top edge of rear board. Dust jacket has very light rubbing and soiling, several very small tears - some with creases at top edge of rear panel - archivally taped, minor edge wrinkling. Very Good+/Very G ood-

15 Taim, Astrid. ALMAGUIN CHRONICLES: MEMORIES OF THE PAST.
Toronto Natural Heritage 2008 1550027603 / 9781550027600 First Edition. Soft Cover Fine
190 pp, small 4to (10" H). B&w photographs, map. "The Almaguin Highlands region, located approximately eighty kilometres north of the halfway point to the North Pole and rising high above sea level, was once coveted for its majestic white pine, game and silver birch. More than a century later; much of its unspoiled wilderness areas remain intact, ready for new exploration. Today, its enviable position of being just north of Muskoka and within easy driving distance of southern Ontario has made the Highlands the logical choice for the eco-tourist seeking new adventures. (This book) paints a lively picture of what the area must have been like in the early days. Here are the lumberjacks who ventured into the last of the great timber stands to cut down what was left of the white pine, and the intrepid settlers who trekked across the terrain not that far behind them - sometimes with little more than blazed trails as their guide. And here are the boat builders whose steamers and tugs traversed the multiple waterways, so important to the district, and the men and women of all walks of life who contributed to the spirit of the times." University of Nebraska Press, Lincoln, 1971, 4th Bison printing.
483 pp, 8vo (8" H), soft cover. "The author....spent the better part of two years as an army officer in the unimaginable wilderness of Nebraska and adjacent territories....He believed that Indians were vermin and Democrats were traitors, and that w as that. On other topics he was open-minded, tolerant, and eager to learn. Though he never fought in a big battle, he saw and recorded practically everything else that happened on the Great Plains. Along with much minutiae, Ware's remin i s c e n c e s c onvey a spacious sense of two American epics: offstage, the war between the North and the South, and under his eyes, the broad stream of migration to the Far West....His book suggests the grandeur of history, and yet it is intimat e, p er so na l co mm u ni cation - fresh, spirited, and delightful reading." JULIE ANDREWS: A LIFE ON STAGE AND SCREEN., Windeler, Robert.
20 Windeler, Robert. JULIE ANDREWS: A LIFE ON STAGE AND SCREEN.
Birch Lane / Carol Publishing, Secaucus, N.J., 1997.
262 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1559723912 B&w photographs. "Since her professional singing debut at the London Hippodrome in 1947 - at the age of twelve - Julie Andrews has been a star. In the half century since th ose last days of British vaudeville, through her smash Broadway comeback in 'Victor/Victoria', she has triumphed on stage, in the movies, and on television. At thirteen, Julie gave a command performance for the Queen of England, at nineteen she b e c ame a Broadway star in 'The Boy Friend', and she became a theatrical legend before she was twenty-one, as Elize Doolittle in 'My Fair Lady'. By the time she was thirty-one, Julie was the best-paid and most beloved actress in the world, with a n Ac ad emy Award for her first movie, 'Mary Poppins', and an international box-office championship with her third movie, 'The Sound of Music'. Her remarkable body of work up to this point stamped her with an indelible image she came to resent: who le som e, innocent, the nanny next door. Worse, at the peak of her enormous success, Andrews was unhappy enough to submit to daily psychotherapy. Her first marriage, to childhood sweetheart Tony Walton, broke down. After two flop movie musicals, 'St ar!' an d 'Darling Lili', the press and the public seemed to turn on her. Julie became box-office poison in Hollywood but even in her semiexile starred in critically successful, Emmy-winning television variety series, wrote two children's book s, a nd pe rfor med live....Here at last is the whole sixty-two-year life story of Julie Andrews - her meteoric rise, her devastating fall, and her incredible comeback, from the little English girl with the freak four-octave, crystalline voice to th e sur prisin g leg end who has outlasted her critics. Rober Windeler's affectionate and insightful biography reveals the full-blooded woman behind the high and low notes."
