466 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, floor plans, map, family tree. "At 6 a.m. on 21 April 1940 John, the 9th Duke of Rutland, and one of Britain's wealthiest men, ended his days, virtually alone, lying on a makeshift bed in a dank, cramped suite of rooms in the servants' quarters of his own home, Belvoir Castle. For weeks, as his health deteriorated, his family, his servants - even the King's doctor - had pleaded with him to come out, but he had refused. After his death, his son and heir, Charles, the 10th Duke of Rutland, ordered that the rooms be locked up and they remained untouched for sixty years. What lay behind this extraordinary set of circumstances? (The author) unravels a complex and compelling tale of love, honour and betrayal, played out in the grand salons of Britain's stately homes at the turn of the twentieth century, and on the battlefields of the Western Front." Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing on rear panel.

447 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "(T)he compelling saga of an artistic genius, a ruthless railroad tycoon, and a sordid crime of passion. In frontier California 130 years ago, English immigrant Eadweard Muybridge managed to capture time and play it back on a screen, inventing stop-motion photography and moving pictures, breakthrough technologies that ushered in our age of visual media. Bankrolling his endeavor was tycoon (and former California governor) Leland Stanford, who built the west half of the transcontinental railroad and personally drove in the last golden spike. Stanford's particular obsession was whether the four hooves of a running horse ever left the ground all at once, and with Muybridge he found an answer. But personal disaster overshadowed Muybridge's remarkable achievements. A visionary artist, and technically brilliant, he was also a murderer." Very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing.

Quite possibly he still is. MacAskill (1893-1956) was born in St. Peter's on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia and from childhood on, his first and last loves were photography and the sea. Pencorp, (London), [1991].
200 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w and color illustrations. "The story of Slough Estates is the unlikely tale of a group of businessmen who bought up the entire surplus stock of British army vehicles used in World War One and ended up as a powerful force in the nation's property development industry...(It) is also the story of a company that made a town. With a community of just 15,000 in 1918, the town of Slough today boasts a prosperous population of almost 100,000 with a density inextricably linked to a host which takes an extraordinary interest in its community welfare...The company could not have grown without the patronage of a good number of businesses down the years, many of which started their own corporate stories on the estate. Some, like No-Pe-Lo Potatoes and the O'Cedar Mop Co., have long since vanished but other have survived the roll call of business life, among them Mars, Flexello, Berlei, Aspro, Horlicks and Black and Decker. This is their story, too." Small light bump to top corners, small bump with closed tear/wrinkles/scuff at bottom edge of front board. 449 pp, 9 1/4" H. "Northrop Frye was one of the most influential critics of the twentieth century. His output was prodigious: his publications include thirty-eight books and monographs, nearly 300 essays and articles, and some 15 reviews and miscellaneous pieces. His reputation is international: he has been the subject of numerous books, a forthcoming biography, and thirty doctoral dissertations from universities as far-flung as Freiburg, Oxford, and Texas. With this bibliography, the massive body of work by and about Frye is now made readily accessible for the first time. More than 2500 entries are included, organized in a practical and straightforward structure. Part One, covering works by Frye, is arranged in chronological order. Part Two, which deals with secondary sources, is presented in alphabetical order. (The author) has provided ample notation for the many hundreds of entries; with the primary sources, he has quoted from Frye's own words as far as possible to illuminate the tone as well as the content." 199 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "(This) is a study of the life, character, and art of one of America's finest poets....(It) accounts for every phase of Miss Moore's life, the early sources of her unusual character, the quick reco gnition and encouragement of her work by Ezra Pound, her years as a young poet in Greenwich Village where her contemporaries included Alfred Kreymborg, William Carlos Williams, H.D., and Wallace Stevens, her distinguished and controversial e d i t o r s h i p of the 'Dial', the most prestigious literary magazine of its day, her 'retirement' to Brooklyn where she continued for decades consistently to produce some of the best poems written in our time. The major part of the book, howev er , is d ev ot ed t o Miss Moore's poetry - from her first book, 'Poems', arranged for and published in 1921 by friends without her knowledge, to the 'Complete Poems' in 1967. Mr. Hall sees danger and protection as recurring preoccupations in Mi ss Mo ore 's wor k, and sh ow s how, in poem after poem, she has explored these themes, calling to her defense a wonderful array of self-sufficient animals and objects, and conjuring such bright shields as independence, courage, love, and imaginati on. T hrou gh minu te atte ntio n t o the language of the poems, he reveals Miss Moore as a poet of fantasy, distortion, and deep feeling....(This book) offers valuable new perspectives on one of the most intriguing figures in twentieth-century le tter s an d mak es acces sib le on e of the richest and most rewarding achievements of modern poetry."
