4 Adams, Jack. Introduction by Lt.-General Sir Brian Horrocks. THE SOUTH WALES BORDERERS (THE 24tH REGIMENT OF FOOT). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES.
Hamish Hamilton, London, (1968), first edition.
157 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations, march. "A Regiment forms a corporate body which takes on a life of its own, often rising above the weaknesses and inadequacies of its human fabric to perform seemingly superhuman deeds such as the 'Immortal Stand' of the 24th Foot at Rorke's Drift during the Zulu War...Since their birth as Dering's Regiment in March 1689, the 24th (which in 1881 became the South Wales Borderers) have participated in nearly all the large and small wars of the past 279 years from Cartagena in South America to Narvik in Arctic Norway. From Saratoga, in America's war of Independence, to Tsingtao in the Far East, where they gained a battle honour unique in the British Army. The Ist Battalion, over which the shadow of amalgamation now lies, has recently returned from an operational tour of Aden. There they proved that the courage and steadfastness of the Regiment and of its individual sons is as strong as ever. This book is a fitting tribute to them and to one of the greatest Regiments of all time." 128 pp, 10 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs, reproductions, drawings. "(P)rovides a lively picture of contrasting courtly scenes through the ages. It takes us from the paralysingly formal Court of Queen Anne to the outlandish ostentation of fifty years later when the Prince of Wales's dancing feet twinkled with 30,000 Pounds worth of diamonds attached to his shoe buckles. It conjures up the social butterflies of the Victorian age and a young debutante in the 1920's having difficulty tucking the essential three white feathers into her fashionably bobbed hair style. The fairy tale dresses and gold encrusted uniforms described and illustrated in this book have echoed or defied the fashions of the world right up to the present day. The last debutante to be presented at Court left Buckingham Palace in 1958, but in ceremonies such as the State Opening of Parliament courtly costume and tradition still linger with us." Spine is slightly twisted, minor toning on pastedowns. Dust jacket has light wear at bottom of front flap-fold, light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of rear panel, very soft crease down rear panel.

9 Ashe, Geoffrey. FROM CAESAR TO ARTHUR.
London Collins 1960 First Edition Hard Cover Good+ Good-
320 p, 8 1/2" H. "(A) study of the life and career of the historical King Arthur in so far as it can be traced through early documents and remains. (The author) begins with the decay of Roman power and its slow disappearance from Britain, while invasion, anarchy and warring small kingdoms take its place. Then comes a reversal of fortune without parallel in the dissolving Empire, when a western Christian military chieftain stems the Saxon tide and imposes a long truce. In this unique recovery, it is suggested, lies a previously unnoticed clue to the whole development of the British monarchy. The kingdom finally created by Alfred the Great and his successors turns out to have been decisively affected by the earlier achievement of Arthur and the failure of the first Saxon attempt at conquest. Piecing together his fragments of history to form the most vivid possible whole, Mr. Ashe explains how the great tradition of Arthur flowed into the Arthurian Legend, and shows how that legend, fantastic and romantic as it is, nevertheless embodies a profound historical insight." Very light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, moderate browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, a few tiny and small edge tears, a few tiny scuffs on spine, minor edge browning, protected in a mylar sleeve.

NICHOLAS HILLIARD., Auerbach, Erna.
12 Auerbach, Erna. NICHOLAS HILLIARD.
Boston Boston Book & Art Shop 1964 Hard Cover Very Good Good+ Nicholas Hilliard.
352 pp, small 4to (10" H). Over 200 reproductions of Hilliard's work, mainly in b&w. "This is the first full-length monograph to be written on the life and work of Nicholas Hilliard who lived from 1547 to 1619. The first English-born painter to gain the status of an artist recognised by the English court, he was painter, limner, engraver and goldsmith to Queen Elizabeth I and later to James I, and is kown to have also painted portraits in oil, but it is difficult to attribute particular oil portraits to his hand. Hilliard's importance is not limited by his performance as a miniaturist, for the style of his miniatures had a major influence on the general trend of English painting, and dominated the manner of contemporary English portraiture, both life-size and miniature. (He) was equally eminent as a goldsmith and he practised this craft throughout his life. Much new biographical material has been found which establishes Hilliard as a great Elizabethan." Small bump to top corners of boards, minor browning to page edges. Dust jacket is moderately browned - mainly on inside surface, is price clipped, has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling - mainly to top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

London J.M. Dent & Sons Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
218 pp, 6 7/8" H. No publication date, but an early edition as there is no mention of the First World War. Map endpapers and decorated title page. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w maps, plus 10 plates depicting coins. "The extent of the land and sea that (this book) covers, between the extremes of Algiers and Samoa, is immense in latitude and longitude; while in points of history it ranges from the oldest to the newest civilisation; as suggested by Karnak, or the new capital of Australia, Canbena (sic). Moreover, in accord with the general idea of these map-books, the effect of the map in illustrating history, the growth and multiplicity of peoples and cities, and the vast possibilities of unworked regions, is kept in sight throughout these pages. The record includes the wars that have passed, from Napoleon's Campain in Egypt of 1798 and General Gordon's last stand at Khartoum, to the battles of Spion Kop and Colenso, and the sieges of Ladysmith and Mafeking in the late South African War. It covers the routes of the great travellers, Mungo Park, Livingstone and Stanley; Stuart, Burke and Wills; and it touches at Vailima in order to recall Robert Louis Stevenson and his South Sea experiences, at the end of his days, as they are pictured by his Samoa book of 1892..." THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR., Bishop, James. Foreword by Lord Blake.
17 Bishop, James. Foreword by Lord Blake. THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
London Angus & Robertson 1982 0207148260 / 9780207148262 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
144 pp, 10 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w reproductions of photographs, drawings, advertisements. "The First World War, which claimed the lives of so many men on the battlefields of the Western Front, also profoundly affected the character and everyday life of the nation at home. It was the first 'total war' and the whole country contributed to the war effort. The unrelenting demands of the trenches eventually forced the Government to introduce conscription while, for those left behind, the state intervened more and more in the lives of its citizens. Hardships increased: food and fuel were in very short supply and rationing had to be imposed in 1916. The civilian population was also directly involved in the hostilities with the bombing raids of zeppelins and aeroplanes. But the war did bring some changes for the better. The salaried classes grew, working conditions improved and the war also helped liberate women who replaced men in factories and public services, and joined the armed forces. When the armistice finally came, in November 1918, Lloyd George promised 'a fit country for heroes to live in' - though the reality proved to be less Utopian. The Illustrated London News continued to publish throughout the First World War and was supplemented by The Illustrated War News. These magazines provided a vivid pictorial chronicle of contemporary events and enable us, today, to enter into the spirit of a bygone era. (The author) has written a fascinating and fully-documented account of these momentous years, complemented by over 200 pictures from the original issues." Light edge wear to boards. Dust jacket has one tiny edge tear, light foxing at top & bottom inside edges, very light edge wrinkling, a few tiny dents and faint line indentations on front panel.

18 Blake, Steve and Lloyd, Scott. With John Baldock. THE KEYS TO AVALON: THE TRUE LOCATION OF ARTHUR'S KINGDOM REVEALED.
Shaftesbury, Dorset Element 2000 1862047359 / 9781862047358 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
302 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w maps, family trees, decorations, colour and b&w photographs. "(The authors) unearth the truth about King Arthur and the magical realm of Avalon. They reveal how, through their investigations, they traced original key documents which had lain neglected for centuries. By combining the ancient sources with an intimate knowledge of the British landscape, they have managed to cast new light on the Dark Ages. Every piece of the puzzle they have put together fits - perfectly. The authors prove that the stories about Arthur and Avalon are rooted firmly within historical events which took place within a precise geographical setting in Wales; they also expose how and to what ends Arthurian legend has been hijacked for political gain throughout the ages. By establishing the historical facts about Arthur, his knights and the exact location of Avalon, (they) rip away the tissue of fabrication and fairy-tale that has shrouded the true origins of the British people and of anyone claiming ancestry from these isles." Book is very slightly cocked. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very minor edge wear, minor browning at inside edges, minor rubbing.

19 Boissery, Beverley. A DEEP SENSE OF WRONG: THE TREASON, TRIALS, AND TRANSPORTATION TO NEW SOUTH WALES OF LOWER CANADIAN REBELS AFTER THE 1838 REBELLION.
Dundurn, Toronto, 1995.
367 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1550022423 B&w maps, illustrations. "In 1839 fifty-eight men left Montreal for the penal colony of New South Wales. They were unimportant men outside their own parishes, ordinary people who had been caught up in the political whirlwind of the 1838 rebellion. Even though they were all civilians, they had been tried by court martial. Convicted of treason, their properties forfeited to the crown, they paid a heavy price for rebellion. And as convicts in Australia, they were considered the lowest of a bad lot. During their years there, however, they earned the respect of Sydney's citizens. (This) is an intimate, grass-roots history, based largely on surviving legal records and on the writings of some of the individuals who lived the story. We follow the men from the confusion of battle, to the court martial, and then to lonely exile in a land half a world away. Their anguish and dignity will resonate today." Light waviness to top/bottom of text block. Dust jacket has light rubbing, a few small areas of light edge wrinkling. Very Good+/Very Good
