"From aviation's earliest days, pilots of aircraft have been conscious of the need for accurate directional information. The development of the magnetic and gyro compass has, for general purposes, kept pace with aviation needs in most areas of the world. Flight operations in Northern Canada, however, present problems which are unique by virtue of the position of the North Magnetic Pole. - - In response to a need for the provision of directional information simply and to within one degree the Flight Standards and Regulations Division of the Civil Aviation Branch has arranged the development of these tables from which the Sun's True Bearing can be extracted directly knowing date, correct Local Civil time (within reasonable limits) and approximate Latitude and Longitude. - - It is also significant to note that these Tables are not limited to Canada only, but include any areas of the earth north of 40 degrees North Latitude, and for all practical purposes will maintain usable accuracy for an indefinite period." From the Foreword. Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownwership marks. Exterior - small soiling mark on top of textblock, some very light rubbing/soiling on rear cover.

They describe the ways in which a path to peace and bliss can be found, either by renouncing the world or by following Jain ethics of non-violence, honesty, moderation and fidelity. Here are stories depictin g the painful consequences when a loved one chooses life as a monk, the triumph of Jain women who win over their husbands to their religion, or the rewards of a simple act of piety. The volume ends with an account of vice and virtue, which d e p i c t s the thieving and destructive passions lurking in the forest of life, ready to rob the unsuspecting traveller of reason and virtue. 6 Hatsuho Naito. Foreword by James Michener. Preface by Hachiro Hosokawa. Introduction by Boye De Mente. THUNDER GODS: THE KAMIKAZE PILOTS TELL THEIR STORY.
New York Kodansha 1989 0870119095 / 9780870119095 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
215 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Map endpapers, b&w photographs, map. "(T)he compelling first-hand account of the pilots who pledged themselves to die for their emperor in the closing days of the Pacific War. Known to the world as kamikaze - divine wind - their suicide attacks on American naval forces caused panic and disruption, but they were born out of the desperation of the Imperial Command, determined to avoid the shame of surrender at any cost. Using as a rationale the loudly proclaimed belief that suicide attacks by Japanese pilots attested to the spiritual righteousness of Japan's struggle, the Command's exhortations convinced legions of young men of the virtue of volunteering for the Ohka program, in which flying bombs were constructed whose only guiding mechanism was their human cargo. The pilots are the thunder gods of the title, and this is the first time they have told their own story. (C)ombines military history, technical innovation, and the personal stories of men of whom something extraordinary was asked, men who died in futility or survived to reflect on their experiences with mixed feelings of pride, poignance and cynicism. These pilots were not fanatics or automatons, but sacrificial victims to the excesses of war. 'Thunder Gods' tells their story, and returns to them their humanity." Minor soiling on fore edge of text block. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has minor edge wrinkling .

Edmonton M.G. Hurtig 1971 0888300360 / 9780888300362 First Hurtig Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+ George Heriot.
602 pp, 10 1/2" H. Red cloth covered boards, black title block with gilt lettering/decoration on spine. Original publisher's cardboard slipcase with titling on spine and one side. Black, white & cream illustrations (several fold-out) plus colour fold-out map (collated). Title continues: "To which is sub-joined a comparative view of the manners and customs of several of the Indian nations of North and South America." "Heriot went to Quebec in 1792 as a civil servant and became deputy postmaster general of Canada in 1799. Until 1816 he remained in Canada, travelling at least as far west as Niagara Falls, perhaps Detroit, and to some extent in the United States, sketching along the way. His legacy - his water-colors and this book, an unsurpassed intimate history of 'the lakes, the rivers, and cataracts, the villages, farm-houses, and townships of Canada'. Although British reviewers of the day were unimpressed by richly detailed descriptions of a mere colony, the extent and precision of Heriot's account is a virtue one hundred and sixty years later. He wrote at length of each of the major waterways in Upper and Lower Canada which were, as James Talman points out in his introduction, 'of first importance in the life of the people as a means of travel and a source of water power'. And his sketches of buildings, particularly in Quebec, are invaluable since many of those buildings were already falling into ruin when Heriot saw them." Very minor wrinkling at top og spine. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing. Slipcase has very light edge wear/rubbing, tiny slight puncture on one side, slight bump at top of spine.

THE WAY TO LIFE: AT THE HEART OF THE TAO TE CHING., Hoff, Benjamin.
8 Hoff, Benjamin. THE WAY TO LIFE: AT THE HEART OF THE TAO TE CHING.
Weatherhill, New York, (1981), Ist edition.
86 pp, oblong 16mo (6 1/4" H x 9 1/8" D), hard cover (blue cloth with silver lettering on spine) in dust jacket. 16 color photographs. "These new and extremely creative versions (of the Tao Te Ching) by Benjamin Hoff, accompanied by an introduction to the basics of Taoist philosophy, bring the words of the sage to life once again. The Tao Te Ching, or Tao Virture Classic, concerns the working of Tao, the way or path to life in harmony with natural laws. The Tao Te Ching cautions us to seek wisdom rather than knowledge: 'Along the way to knowledge, many things are accumulated. Along the way to wisdom, many things are discarded'. In just this manner, Benjamin Hoff has succeeded in dispersing the mysteries surrounding this ancient text and in reducing the Taoist philosophy to a straightforward message, ever intriguing but no longer elusive. Such basic principles of Taoism as the uncarved block, the source, and the wu wei are given lucid definition. And in further accordance with the Taoist belief that words are an insufficient vehicle for conveying the meaning of Tao, sixteen color photographs are juxtaposed to selected passages, reflecting their essential truth..." THE COUNTESS., Johns, Rebecca.
9 Johns, Rebecca. THE COUNTESS.
New York Crown 2010 0307588459 / 9780307588456 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
285 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "In this riveting dramatization of Erzebet Bathory's life, the countess tells her story in her own words, written to her only son - a final reckoning from his mother in an attempt to reveal the truth behind her downfall. Countess Bathory describes her upbringing in one of the most powerful noble houses in Hungary, recounting in loving detail her devotion to her parents and siblings as well as the heartbreak of losing her father at a young age. She soon discovers the price of being a woman in sixteenth-century Hungary as her mother arranges her marriage to Ferenc Nadasdy, a union made with the cold calculation of a financial transaction. Young Erzebet knows she has no choice but to accept this marriage even as she laments its loveless nature and ultimately turns to the illicit affections of another man. Seemingly resigned to a marriage of convenience and a life of surreptitious pleasure, the countess surprises even herself as she ignites a marital spark with Ferenc through the most unromantic of acts: the violent punishment of an insolent female servant. The event shows Ferenc that his wife is no trophy but a strong, determined woman more than capable of managing their vast estates during Ferenc's extensive military campaigns against the Turks. Her naked assertion of power accomplishes what her famed beauty could not: capturing the love of her husband. The countess embraces this new role of loving wife and mother, doing everything she can to expand her husband's power and secure her family's future. But a darker side surfaces as Countess Bathory's demand for virtue, obedience, and, above all, respect from her servants take a sinister turn. What emerges is not only a disturbing, unflinching portrait of the deeds that gave Bathory the moniker 'Blood Countess', but an intimate look at the woman who became a monster." Remainder dot on bottom of textblock near spine, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny bump on top edge of front board. Dust jacket has some areas of light edge wrinkling, light rubbing.

322 pp, small 8vo (7 3/4" H), hard cover (yellow/orange boards with green lettering/decoration on spine) - no dust jacket. "(In this novel, P.G. Wodehouse's) characters are new, but they will be long remembered: Mr Bulpitt, the greatest of American process servers; the Princess von und zu Dwornizchek ('the sand in civilization's spinach'); Sir Buckstone Abbott, following the great if difficult tradition of Wodehousian baronets; the beautiful Jane; a long list of memorables.
