SECURITY FOR A NEW EUROPE: THE VIENNA NEGOTIATIONS ON CONFIDENCE- AND SECURITY-BUILDING MEASURES 1989-90, AND BEYOND., Borawski, John.
2 Borawski, John. SECURITY FOR A NEW EUROPE: THE VIENNA NEGOTIATIONS ON CONFIDENCE- AND SECURITY-BUILDING MEASURES 1989-90, AND BEYOND.
London Brassey's (UK) 1992 1857530403 / 9781857530407 First English Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
235 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). "While the 'traditional' threat of East-West military confrontation appears much reduced, events in Yugoslavia have removed any complacency about the stability of the new Europe unfolding around us. New threats - territorial quarrels, nationalism, and the demise of the Soviet Union as a unitary state - require a radically new approach to European security. The creation of an effective security system will be highly dependent on the trust and co-operation between the former Warsaw Treaty Organisation countries and their new-found NATO allies. As their title suggests, the Vienna Negotiations on Confidence- and Security-Building Measures aimed to do exactly this, by fostering greater openness about military organisation and activity. John Borawski's history of the negotiations provides a detailed analysis of the issues involved, indicating the likely direction of future talks following the watershed March-July 1992 CSCE follow-up meeting in Helsinki, and highlighting their extreme relevance to the problems confronting European policy-makers today. As they continue to seek an alternative to the limited, hardware-based negotiations of the past, 'Security for a New Europe' grows in importance as a source of ideas for problems old and new." Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, light rubbing.

THE REAL FIGARO: THE EXTRAORDINARY CAREER OF CARON DE BEAUMARCHAIS., Cox, Cynthia.
6 Cox, Cynthia. THE REAL FIGARO: THE EXTRAORDINARY CAREER OF CARON DE BEAUMARCHAIS.
Coward-McCann, New York, 1963, first American edition.
212 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "(A) biography of a brilliant and impudent man living in eighteenth-century France: Caron de Beaumarchais. It was a life of fantastic adventure. Inventor, secret agent, politician, c ourtier, publisher and supplier of arms to the American colonies, Beaumarchais also wrote plays. Music lovers enchanted by Mozart's 'The Marriage of Figaro" and Rossini's 'The Barber of Seville' remember that they are based on the brillian t c o m e d i e s of Beaumarchais. Born Pierre Caron in 1732, Beaumarchais was the son of a prosperous Parisian clockmaker. As a child, he was apprenticed to his father, became fairly famous in the field of watchmaking and invented several new an d c om pl ic at ed d ev ices. He soon found wider scope by buying an appointment at the Court of Louis XV, where he swiftly rose to the highest favor. The King sent him on a secret mission to Madrid, and he returned to find himself accused of for ge ry an d e mbe zzl eme nt. H e became emeshed in a series of legal actions in which he fought vigorously to maintain his honor. Louis XV, meanwhile, sent him secretly to London to stop a blackmailer from publishing scandal about the royal mist res s, Mada me d u Ba rry. Th e ne xt K ing, Louis XVI, gave him two similar missions; the first, to smother a scurrilous attempt to libel Marie-Antoinette, took him to London, Amsterdam and Vienna; the second, to recover some papers of the late K ing whi ch we re of expl osive impo rtanc e, in volved him in London with the extraordinary Chevalier d'Eon, a secret agent who, on occasion, wore female dress and was widely (but wrongly) believed to be a woman. While in England, Beaumarchais al lied him self w ith th e caus e of t he Ame rican coloni es; and when Louis XVI refused to aid the rebels openly, Beaumarchais organized a private firm to supply them with arms and munitions as well as ships, with astonishing results. Meanwhile, h is pl ay 'T he Barb er of S eville' had be en accl aimed and its sequel, 'The Marriage of Figaro', so audaciously mocked the Government that for five years the King forbade its performance. But when public readings spread its fame, and when the b an was reluc tantly l ifted, a ll Paris fought to see i t. Wh en the R evolution broke out, Beaumarchais witnessed the storming of the Bastille. In 1792 false rumors caused an hysterical mob to invade his ostentatious mansion; he escaped to a fr iend's house. Later he was arre sted, rel eased th rough inf luence of a woma n, and after further adventures he found himself a proscribed refugee in Hamburg. He returned to France in 1796 and died there three years later." 11 Grey, Ian. PETER THE GREAT: EMPEROR OF ALL RUSSIA.
Philadelphia J.B. Lippincott 1960 Second Printing Hard Cover Very Good Good-
505 pp, 8 1/2" H. "The first modern Russian was Peter the Great. In this enthralling biography of that remarkable, revolutionary ruler, Ian Grey paints a superbly illuminating portrait - clean, clear, objective, without malice or sentimentality. Here we have, life-size, not only the great Tsar, but the man who fell in love with a peasant girl and made her his empress; the father who was betrayed by his son; the roisterer who was a creative genius; the physical giant who carried all his life the scars of a childhood terror; the soldier, sailor, laborer, daring innovator, architect of a nation. Tossing aside all the pomp and holiness that traditionally surrounded a tsar, Peter ripped apart the fabric of Russian life and, almost singlehandedly, made his country into a modern Western power." 13 Hamilton-williams, David. THE FALL OF NAPOLEON: THE FINAL BETRAYAL.
London Brockhampton 1999 1860199852 / 9781860199851 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
352 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w plates, maps/battle plans. "This important study of the cause and effects of Napoleon's removal from power tracks the significant events in his illustrious career through to his downfall and, while doing so, charts the clandestine diplomatic intrigues linking Britain, Austria, Russia and Prussia in the quest for the Emperor's demise. Using substantial new research, (the author) questions many of the established views in Napoleonic literature to date. By disclosing hitherto secret terrorist organizations, uncovering the attempts to assassinate Napoleon, highlighting unbridled political duplicity, and demonstrating a host of previously misinterpreted signals and actions, he instigates a fresh assessment of the fall of Napoleon, new reasons to consider how much it was self-inflicted and how much it became inevitable given the combined forces - 'friend' and well as 'foe' - ranged against him. However great his military campaigns, how often he was victorious on the battle-field, Napoleon was destined to be deposed by political connivance and personal betrayal." Very small bump at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

352 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "(O)ffers a very different kind of tour to the armchair traveler. Wander through the haunted castles and cottages of Europe with Hans Holzer, the world's most famous psychic investigator, and explore a full range of psychic phenomena from the spirits of the British Isles to the haunts of Imperial Vienna. In England, Anne Boleyn's legendary ghost walks headless within the Tower of London; a procession of transparent monks appears in the Cathedral of Winchester, where no monks have trod since the sixteenth century; and Bloody Queen Mary still visits the four-poster bed where she slept in the dark days of 1553. At Kilkea Castle in Kildare, it is said that the Wizard Earl and his companions ride at night and will return someday from the beyond to 'put things right in Ireland'. Room No. 2 in the Hotel de l'Europe in Avignon holds a shocking surprise for the unwary guest; and in Paris, No. 3 avenue Montaigne offers a special concert of ghostly piano music from a spectral grand. Ghost occur wherever great tragedy has left an unfortunate person stranded between the next world and this one, someone who has not yet been freed from their emotional turmoil. The true accounts presented in this book are based on Dr. Holzer's personal investigations." One page leaf with two very small scollops at fore-edge. OUT OF SEASON: A TRAVELLER'S TALE OF A WINTER JOURNEY., Hughes, Spike.
15 Hughes, Spike. OUT OF SEASON: A TRAVELLER'S TALE OF A WINTER JOURNEY.
London Robert Hale 1956 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good -
156 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "The term 'out of season' is purely relative, of course. The winter's journey which took Spike Hughes and his wife to Sicily and back, by way of Germany and Austria, was made at a time of year which, so far from being out of season, was at the very height of the seaons for their purpose: the study of famous Italian opera houses in full operatic cry, as it were. In the course of a journey of some 4,000 miles (they) found many things to delight them, not the least important being an atmosphere of leisure and an opportunity to stand and stare which can be achieved only out of season. So it was that by visiting in winter places which normally thrive as summer resorts he found time to learn many things which would 'come in useful' to anybody willing to profit from his experiences and likely to spend holidays in those places at a more conventional time of year. In the end, the difference between visiting Italy in winter was the difference between being fussed over and spoiled as a guest and being allowed to live one's own life without having to distinguish one day from another. And that, Spike Hughes believes, is the greatest luxury any form of travel can take." Scattered foxing marks on edges of textblock, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light browning on endpapers. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling and a few tiny tears, light rubbing, light soiling on rear panel, foxing on inside surface.

Paul Hamlyn, (London, 1967).
439 pp. + 16 pp of measured drawings at rear, 4to (12" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs of instruments, details, bows and labels, measured drawings, color frontispiece. "The main body of the text is devoted to a complete and authoritative alphabetical list of all the craftsmen known to have made violins or other stringed instruments as works of art in the German-speaking lands of Central Europe. It incorporates all the researches of earlier authorities, corrects some previous misconceptions, and sheds new light not only on established figures but also on the rising generation of 20th century makers. Each of over 4,000 makers is described in a brief biography, and there are comments on the style, tone and value of their instruments. There are over 800 photographs showing clearly the important points to look for in the work of the chief masters, and illustrating labels known to be authentic as an aid to identification, and there is an introduction outlining the growth of the major German schools...a complete historical survey of the subject, and traces the development of the craft in such famous centres as Markneukirchen, Mittenwald, the Tyrol, Vienna and Stuttgart. It draws a vivid picture of the nature of life and the changing structure of society in Central Europe during the centuries from the time when the violin developed from more primitive instruments right up to the present day." THE KAISER: A LIFE OF WILHELM II, LAST EMPEROR OF GERMANY., Kurenberg, Joachim von. Translated by H.T. Russell and Herta Hagen.
17 Kurenberg, Joachim von. Translated by H.T. Russell and Herta Hagen. THE KAISER: A LIFE OF WILHELM II, LAST EMPEROR OF GERMANY.
Cassell, London, 1954, first British edition.
370 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "(The author) first met Kaiser Wilhelm when serving as a Guards officer in Potsdam. His associations at this time and his subsequent life in the German Embassies at Constantinople, Rome and Vienna, provided him with experience of Court circles which enables him to reproduce, in all essentials, the atmosphere of the pre-1914 period of the Kaiser's life. Appointed as biographer by the Kaiser at Doorn, he was able to consult his subject frequently, and the results of these numerous interviews are incorporated in the text of the work, so that the Kaiser's point of view is given in juxtaposition to the judgement of others. To assist the reader further in passing judg e m e n t o n the man, the opinions of the Kaiser's colleagues, his friends, relatives and enemies, are also interwoven. This life is primarily a personal biography, the intention being to provide a full portrait of the man rather than a study of hi s ti me s. T he author had full access to the State Archives in Berlin and Potsdam, and his work is fully documented." Minor edge wear, slight bump at bottom corner of both boards. Oxford University Press, Oxford, 1982.
299 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0192158635 B&w plates. "(I)n this gripping full-length account of his first exile we see Napoleon not as the Man of Destiny but scaled down to human size, his field of action no longer the whole of Europe but the comic-opera kingdom of Elba. Even on this tiny island the habits of power persisted, and Napoleon acted the role of the great commander, the lawgiver, the patron of the arts and sciences, and in all his dealings r e v e a l e d himself as an egotist of great personal charm. (The author's) account of his year in exile is an exciting story of plot and counter-plot, of careless statesmen, political intriguers, dissident soldiers, and secret agents. Napoleon' s wa it in g ga me on Elba is played against a background of unrest in France, muddle in England, and warlike quarrels among the Allies trying to redraw the map of Europe at the Congress of Vienna." (In this book, Kyoto's) shrines and temples are prominently featured, but Matsubara gives equal emphasis to (its) cultural role. The Kabuki theater and geisha dancing, No drama and rollicking street festivals are all splendidly brought to life by her bold lines and her exquisitely Japanese sense of color. The pictures are complemented by the perceptive text of Bunsho Jugaku, an authority on handmade Japanese paper." Light vertical waviness to free front endpaper, light toning to edges of half-title page. Dust jacket has price-clipped and has very minor edge wrinkling. Slipcase has light toning to some edges.
