PANDORA'S LAST VOYAGE., Rawson, Geoffrey.
2 Rawson, Geoffrey. PANDORA'S LAST VOYAGE.
Longmans, London, 1963, first edition.
165 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates, maps. "In 1791, H.M.S. Pandora was sent to the Pacific to find the notorious Bounty and bring the mutineers back to justice in England. Though Pandora never found the object of her mi ssion and failed to apprehend the main party on Pitcairn Island, she eventually rounded up those of the mutineers who had elected to stay on Tahiti. These had to face Pandora's brutal Captain Edwards, and some were inexcusably lost, drowned i n t h e i r manacles when Pandora ran on to a reef. The wreck was succeeded by a hazardous and astonishing passage in open boats to safety - to trial and possible death. Contemporary documents form the basis of (this) rousing account of the voy ag e, of P an do ra's crew and of her prisoners; of the Bounty midshipman George Stewart who married a beautiful Tahitian and whose romance was celebrated by Byron; of Mary Bryant, the girl convict from Botany Bay; and of the aimiable people of th e ' Isl a nd Par adi ses ' to whom the coming of ships' crews to the South Seas brought little but sorrow and degradation. Set against a background of perilous reefs and uncharted tropical seas, their story has all the power of history, and the pac e an d ex ci tme nt o f ad vent ure." Minor bump at top of spine, previous owner's small stamp on front pastedown. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has light wrinkling at top of spine and top/bottom of flap-folds, light rubbing/soiling on rear panel , lig ht brow ning at bo ttom edge of flaps. TEN MINUTES TO BUFFALO: THE STORY OF GERMANY'S GREAT ESCAPER., Steinhilper, Ulrich and Osborne, Peter.
3 Steinhilper, Ulrich and Osborne, Peter. TEN MINUTES TO BUFFALO: THE STORY OF GERMANY'S GREAT ESCAPER.
Independent, Bromley, 1991, first edition.
432 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1872836011 B&w maps, plans, photographs, reproductions. "Having fought throughout the Battle of Britain, Ulrich Steinhilper was shot down as he flew his Messerschmitt Bf 109-E on a bo mber escort duty. As the wing turned over London it was attacked by 74 Squadron, 'The Tigers', and Sergeant Bill Skinner in a Spitfire was to claim the 'kill'. So it was that in late October 1940 Ulrich was to begin a phase of his life which w o u l d stretch him, at times, to the limit of physical endurance and at another to the edge of insanity. He was to become a prisoner of war, but he was not a man to embrace something as alien as imprisonment lightly and so he was to dedicate h i ms el f to t he idea of escape. This is the remarkable story of the man who was to become one of the select few, popularly known as 'Die Ausbrecherkonige von Kanada' (the breakout kings from Canada). It is a singularly remarkable history of inn ov ati on, c our age and, at times sheer audacity. The detailed record of the life of one very unusual German prisoner of war. It is entirely written from documents which were laboriously hand-written in 1943 and which, through a remarkable seri es of e vent s, were ret urned to Ulrich Steinhilper in 1953. It is not, therefore, the reminiscences of events which occurred fifty years ago, coloured and tainted by the passage of time, but the accurate and historically correct diary of an exce pti onal young ma n." Creas ing and repiar to top corner of rear paste-down, small piece torn from top corner of free rear endpaper, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has heavy wrinkling at top of spine, light wrinkling at top/bottom o f re ar fl ap-fol d an d to p edge of front panel, light rubbing on rear panel with a few very light indentation lines.
