Ottawa Deneau 0888790716 / 9780888790712 First Printing Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
247 pp, 9 1/4" H. "In 1921, a 'little band' of disparate activists formed the Communist Party of Canada. Civil authorities across the country reacted with fear, even though R.C.M.P. officers described the party as 'a handful of ineffective English-speaking leaders, a negligible French-speaking element, an isolated Jewish element, with the agitators drawn from the Finnish and Ukrainian immigrants, whose benevolent societies paid for the Party's maintenance'. (This book) documents the ensuing clashes between the Canadian communists and Canada's political and legal establishments, from 1928 to 1932. Dr. Betcherman skillfully recreates the excitement of street fights and court cases, culminating in the spectacular trial of communist Tim Buck. (She) interviewed Communist Party members, Crown attorneys and Defence lawyers of the period, and was granted access to rare transcripts of trials, appeals and correspondence in compiling this, the first detailed and thoroughly entertaining history of these events." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, three very small corner bumps. Dust hacket has very light edge wear and wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny dent on rear hinge, tiny scuffs on rear flap-fold.

Leaders of other volunteer organizations, educators looking for ways to promote greater appreciation of science, and local historians interested in the role of the Society in the life of their communities will find helpful ideas in this book. Don Mills, Ontario Burns & MacEachern 1979 0887680844 / 9780887680847 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
268 pp, 9 1/4" H. Map endpapers, b&w illustrations. "At the age of twenty-two, Archibald McDonald was responsible for the health and well-being of all ninety-four members of the 1813 party of Lord Selkirk's ill-fated Red River settlement. (He) responded to this heavy burden as he did to all the other difficulties that he experienced in his life as adminstrator and fur trader in the days of the Red River settlement and the early history of the Pacific Northwest - with an engaging combination of practicality, good humor, and hard work. Drawing extensively from McDonald's letters, reports, and diaries, (the author) lets the subject of this biography tell his own story: of the enmity between the Red River settlers and the violent, vindictive Nor-Westers, who were determined to destroy the Red River colony; of his years of service in the Hudson's Bay Company, where he became commander of forts on the Lower Fraser and Columbia Rivers; and of the long canoe voyages through the untamed Canadian wilderness." Norman University of Oklahoma Press 1990 0806127317 / 9780806127316 Soft Cover Fine
176 pp, 8 3/6" H. B&w reproductions, maps. "In the summer of 1792, two Spanish schooners, the 'Sutil' and the 'Mexicana', were ordered to inspect the Pacific Coast from Vancouver Island to Monterey. The schooners were commanded by two youthful naval officers, Dionisio Alcala Galiano and Cayetano Valdes. Assisted by their scribe and artist, Jose Cadero, they recorded their efforts to find the so-called Strait of Anian, a Spanish Northwest Passage. The full account, here translated into English, reveals much new information on the indigenous peoples of California, Spanish-Indian relations, and the successes and failures of the Franciscan missionaries. Also included is a vocabulary and catechism of the Carmel Mission Indians missing in earlier editions. In introductory chapters and notes, Donald C. Cutter supplements the authors' observations with a brief history of California and biographical information on the authors, other naval officers, and the soldiers and friars." THE SHARP END: A CANADIAN SOLDIER'S STORY., Davis, James R.
20 Davis, James R. THE SHARP END: A CANADIAN SOLDIER'S STORY.
Douglas & McIntyre, Vancouver, 1997.
270 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1550545884 B&w photographs, maps. "Through James Davis's eyes, we see the real face of Canada's army: efficient, technologically advanced - sometimes brutal. The uncompromising opinio ns Davis has about the strengths and weaknesses of our present-day military are backed up by his own first-hand experience at 'the sharp end' as a frontline soldier. The bungling and politically motivated actions of the Forces' senior ranks a n d t h e ir government masters, he states, chronically compromise the effectiveness of our fighting forces. Davis was at the defence of Sarajevo as centuries-old ethnic emnity between Serbs and Croats exploded into house-by-house guerilla warfa re . H e w as i n Rwanda as Hutus and Tutsis struggled for dominance. A former member of Canada's famed Airborne Regiment, Davis relives its emotional, controversial last days following revelations of misconduct by a handful of members in Somali a. T he st ory of hi s active duty is chilling but leavened with poignancy - hardened soldiers moved by the slaughter of children and innocents in the former Yugoslavia; an inspiring visit to a gorilla sanctuary in Rwanda, mere miles from horrifi c b loo dle tti ng. Dav is a lso portrays the daily challenges of making-do in Canada's diminished military forces and tells shocking anecdotes such as one about the 'Remembrance Day Massacre', when a poorly planned field exercise went terribly wro ng."
