1 Bailey, Hilary. CASSANDRA, PRINCESS OF TROY.
Jonathan Cape, London, (1993), Ist edition.
325 pp, large 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. Cassandra, having lived quietly on a farm for twenty years, begins to write her reminiscences of the past. It is a "tragic story, taken from one of the oldest and most famous tales ever told - the war between the Greeks and the Trojans. It begins with Helen's flight, with Paris of Troy, from her husband. It tells of how a Greek army crossed the sea to attack Troy and bring back Helen, of the fall of Troy and its terrible aftermath. In this wonderfully vivid historical novel the author imagines Cassandra, the Trojan prophetess, did not die as in the legend, but lived on in hiding for many years. As she begins to write, Cassandra believes she is free to tell her story, but it is not so - there are still secrets to be uncovered and her own tale has not ended...This marvellous and moving novel tells of the eternal forces of human life - about war and its consequences for men and women, about courage, feud(s), revenge and fated love." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, light rubbing. VG+/VG

CHARIOT: THE ASTOUNDING RISE AND FALL OF THE WORLD'S FIRST WAR MACHINE., Cotterell, Arthur.
3 Cotterell, Arthur. CHARIOT: THE ASTOUNDING RISE AND FALL OF THE WORLD'S FIRST WAR MACHINE.
London Pimlico 2004 0712669426 / 9780712669429 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Near Fine
344 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, drawings, maps. "The chariot changed the face of ancient warfare. First in West Asia and Egypt, then in India and China, charioteers came to dominate the battlefield. In 1274 B.C. at Kadesh in present-day Syria - where the untried pharoah Ramesses II was nearly defeated by the Hittites - some 5,000 chariots were deployed in battle. Its use as a war machine is grapically recounted in Indian epics and Chinese chronicles. Homer's Illiad tells of the attack on Troy by Greek heroes who rode in chariots. In 325 B.C. Alexander the Great faced charioteers in northern India, while in 55 B.C., on a Kent beach, Julius Caesar was met by British chariots. This unique book traces the rise and fall of the chariot right across the Old World, from Britain to Korea." Includes a chapter titled 'Survivals, Ritual and Racing'. Book is Fine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, very minor rubbing on spine.

FATAL DECISION: ANZIO AND THE BATTLE FOR ROME., D'Este, Carlo.
5 D'Este, Carlo. FATAL DECISION: ANZIO AND THE BATTLE FOR ROME.
HarperCollins, New York, 1991, book club edition.
566 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "By taking advantage of Allied command of the sea and air to effect complete surprise, infantry and armored forces landing at Anzio on January 22 were expected to secure a beachhead and then push inland to cut the two main highways and railroads supplying the German armies to the south, either trapping and annihilating them or forcing them to withdraw north and opening the way to R o m e . S u c h was the plan. What really happened, brilliantly told by Carlo D'Este, was a near disaster for the Allies and the unfortunate soldiers involved. Doomed by uncertain leadership at the highest levels, including Churchill's pressure an d me dd l in g, G en eral Sir Harold Alexander's lack of firm directives, and General Mark Clark's unwillingness to risk defeat or push a tired General John Lucas, the Anzio beachhead became a death trap, with Allied troops forced to fight for the ir li ves f o r f ive dr ead ful months in a throwback to the trench warfare of World War I. Even the enventual Allied victory, when the Germans finally gave way in May 1944, was tarnished by Clark's ambition to be first in Rome instead of a ttem pti ng t o cu t o ff and des troy or capture fleeing German troops...." Dust jacket has moderate ege wear, light edge wrin kling , on e sma ll te ar, two tiny chip s, co rner crease on front flap, very light rubbing, crease down spine. VG/G

Here, for the first time, is an accurate, close-up, and detailed look at the high-tech war f a r e played out in the skies over Iraq and Kuwait. Using terminology anyone can understand, (the author) explains the concepts and strategies that were used to plan and execute the most successful air campaign in history. 14 Rhys, Ernest, editor. ATLAS OF ANCIENT & CLASSICAL GEOGRAPHY. EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY NO. 451.
London J.M. Dent & Sons 1933 Revised Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good
268 pp, 6 7/8" H. Decorated endpapers and title page. Colour and b&w maps. Includes Historical Gazetteer and Index. "We begin with the voyages of the Argonauts, and the world of Homer, representing a Europe on whose outer western rim these islands lay in Cimmerian darkness, with no western hemisphere of the future Americas beyond them. The eastern survey of Herodotus, and the Eratosthenes' map which ranges from Ultima Thule in the far north to Arabia Deserta and the Indian limits, carry the record to the point where the live contact between geography and ancient history occurs. It is seen in the voyage of Nearchus who sailed as far southeast as the mouth of the Indus in 325 B.C.; and Strabo and Ptolemy bring us to the partition of the old world at the beginning of the Christian era. It was in the library of Alexandria that Eratosthenes wrote the work which began the real mapping out of the globe eith the lines of latitude and longitude. Turning to the more special maps we realize in that of Greece, as Professor Bury has shown us, how vitally its physical features affected its history and its place among the nations. We see how its ridged headland, broken by a great sea rift, and how the heights of Olympus, Ossa, and Pelion, and those of Euboea and the island chain beyond, and how again Epirus and the Pelopennesus, gave the land its mountain barriers. But finally it was the sea decided the fate of the people; they were fairly driven to seek their outlet and their defence on its waters; and the decisive factor was the Aegean, which became in a sense the fluid axis of Greek conquest, commerce, and colonial life. In the same way, it is the map that makes us aware of the effect of position in the case of an old rival to Rome like Carthage. The line-maps of the cities include Syracuse, Thebes, Babylon, Jerusalem, Tyre, Pompeii; and among the battlefields are Marathon and Salamis, Issus and Thermopylae." From the Introduction. Slight fading to spine color, very light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor browning to edges of text block, small light scratch on front cover, two tiny corner bumps, book lightly cracked in several places - book very sound, line indentation with a series of tiny dints down free front endpaper - migrates into adjacent preliminary pages. London Granada 1984 0246122935 / 9780246122933 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good William Bramhall.
232 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w illustrations. "A bawdy, bouncy, hilarious retelling of the Arthurian tales - a combination of Monty Python and Boccaccio, writen under a pen name by a best-selling author. The scene: a castle in fourteenth-century Wales, lashed by wind and rain. At table: the baron, his daughter, his wife, and the new cleric. A beggar and a hag arrive and convince the baron that they are Sir Launcelot and the fair Elaine; they promise to tell the Arthurian legends as they 'really happened'. In these ten astounding tales - each one more rollicking than the last - 'Sir Launcelot' and 'Elaine' reveal the true story of King Arthur (he was once the assistant in Merlin's magic act); introduce us to the Black and Red Knights, so enamoured of each other they are hard put to find a reason to battle; show us the Enchanted Forest, where an ugly old woman assures Sir Gay that all is opposite - that she is in truth a rare beauty; and introduces us to the marvellous Sir Persival, whose enormous 'burden' is a great source of ribald interest to both sexes." Tiny light stain on fore-edge of text block, very light edge wear, wrinkling at top of spine, minor wrinkle at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor browning on flaps.

WHERE TROY ONCE STOOD., Wilkens, Iman.
17 Wilkens, Iman. WHERE TROY ONCE STOOD.
St. Martin's, New York, 1991, first U.S. edition.
365 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0312059949 Map endpapers, b&w maps, plans, drawings, reproductions. "Arguing, convincingly, that the 'Iliad' and the 'Odyssey' do not fit the topography, geology, climate, and oceanic tidal patterns of the eastern Mediterranean, Wilkens relocates the Homeric scene in western Europe and the northern Atlantic, revealing the precise site of Troy itself and the plain on which the Trojan War was fought. By examining the texts in det ail, Wilkens has identified over 400 place-names in western Europe and concludes that the original oral version was composed by Homer several hundred years before it was written down. He reveals that the Trojan War was fought on a far larger scale than previously thought, by Celts from regions as far apart as Scandinavia and Spain, and that the 'Odyssey' provided an oral map for illiterate Celtic seafarers - an extraordinary and enlightening journey into prehistory that is as exciting as the voyages of Odysseus. Thanks to Wilkens' patient detective work, many of the most puzzling aspects of Homer's epic poems now fall into place, enabling the reader - perhaps for the first time - to understand fully the meaning and significance of Euro pe's oldest literary masterpieces.' Very light dust soiling on top of textblock, minor soiling on bottom of textblock, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor edge wear at corners and at top/bottom of spine.
