10 Baigent, Michael and Leigh, Richard. SECRET GERMANY: CLAUS VON STAUFFENBERG AND THE MYSTICAL CRUSADE AGAINST HITLER.
London Penguin 1995 0140247165 / 9780140247169 Soft Cover Very Good+
337 pp, mass market paperback. B&w photographs, map, family tree. "In July 1944 a group of conspirators known as Secret Germany attempted to kill Hitler. The mastermind of the conspiracy was Count Claus von Stauffenberg. Who was this charismatic, dashing aristocrat, who was said to be the only man to stare the Fuhrer down? What were the secret teachings that inspired him to the audacious act of assassination? Forty-six serious but failed attempts on Hitler's life in twenty years reflect a strong anti-Nazi movement in Germany. For Stauffenberg, the bomb plot organized by his esoteric circle was more a moral and spiritual necessity than an act of political expediency. Had he succeeded, he might have become the saviour of the national soul. In this remarkable investigation (the authors) explain how Stauffenberg represents a resolution of the conflicting myths of German culture. In his courage and integrity he stands as an atonement for the barbarism of the Third Reich." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very minor edge wear.

London Viking 2012 0670917559 / 9780670917556 Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
466 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, floor plans, map, family tree. "At 6 a.m. on 21 April 1940 John, the 9th Duke of Rutland, and one of Britain's wealthiest men, ended his days, virtually alone, lying on a makeshift bed in a dank, cramped suite of rooms in the servants' quarters of his own home, Belvoir Castle. For weeks, as his health deteriorated, his family, his servants - even the King's doctor - had pleaded with him to come out, but he had refused. After his death, his son and heir, Charles, the 10th Duke of Rutland, ordered that the rooms be locked up and they remained untouched for sixty years. What lay behind this extraordinary set of circumstances? (The author) unravels a complex and compelling tale of love, honour and betrayal, played out in the grand salons of Britain's stately homes at the turn of the twentieth century, and on the battlefields of the Western Front." Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing on rear panel.

Unpaginated,10 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "The Indians told stories to explain how their world was made; they told stories to preserve their history for themselves and their children; they told stories because there were always those who wanted to listen. Their stories were handed down from generation to generation and in recent times have been collected by anthropologists working among the surviving tribes. The eleven stories retold in this book by Isabel Barclay are all about birds and animals. One or two come from the Prairies and the Pacific Northwest; the rest belong to the people of the eastern woodlands. The illustrations have been taken from a seventeenth-century manuscript in the Public Archives of Canada know as 'Les raretes des Indes'. 15 Barthorp, Michael. CRATER TO THE CREGGAN: A HISTORY OF THE ROYAL ANGLIAN REGIMENT 1964-1974.
Leo Cooper, London, 1976, first edition.
160 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), soft cover. ISBN 085052229 Color frontispiece, b&w photographs, maps, 'family tree'. "In the early 1960s a new concept for the organisation of the Infantry was devised - the voluntary formation of Large Regiments. This is the story of the first: the Royal Anglian Regiment, with four regular battalions, formed from the seven county regiments of East Anglia and the East Midlands. These regiments, each with long and highly individual histories and tradition s , m a d e a decision to unite, a step which required goodwill, tolerance, trust and determination to made the union succeed. In some quarters, the Large Regiment concept was a nail in the coffin of the treasured regimental system; to others, i t wa s a m ea ns of retaining the essential features of that system while withstanding the stresses of change in the Army as a whole. The Royal Anglians have had ten years in which to test their experiment, years of futher reductions in the Arm y, of t rai nin g a s a i rpo r table and mechanized infantry, keeping the peace in distant garrisons, as United Nations troops, and above all the years of bullet and bomb in Aden and Ulster. This book describes how the dangers and difficulties o f t hose ye ars have wel ded to geth er a new regiment of modern infantry, highly trained and professional yet still conscious of inherited traditions. Chiefly, it is a picture of the contemporary British infantryman, disciplined and brave in ac tion , pat ient and chee rful in a dve rsity , a new breed in many ways but with all the best qualities of his forefathers and, in a confused world, a figure of hope and reassurance." Very faint cigarette odor, small soft bump to top corner of p ages, light wear at t op of front hing e/sp ine, l ight rubbing, fore-edge of front cover is lightly faded, minor soiling to bottom of textblock, very light browning to edges of textblock, tiny speck on top of textblock, very faint crease and s light fading on spi ne. "Landover was a genuine magic kingdom, with fairy folk and wizardry, just as the advertisement had promised. But after he purchased it, Ben Holiday (former Chicago lawyer) learned that there were a few details the ad had failed to mention. The kingdom was a ruin. The Barons refused to recognize a king, and the peasants were without hope. A dragon was laying waste the countryside, while an evil witch plotted to destroy everything. Ben's only followers were the incompetent Court Magician; Abernathy, the talking dog who served as Court Scribe; and the lovely Willow - but she had a habit of putting down roots in the moonlight and turning into a tree. The Paladin, legendary champion of the Kings of Landover, seemed to be only a myth and an empty suit of armor - ."
