2 Arch, Nigel and Marschner, Joanna. SPLENDOUR AT COURT: DRESSING FOR ROYAL OCCASIONS SINCE 1700.
London Unwin Hyman, London, (1987), Ist edition. 1987 0713526610 / 9780713526615 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
128 pp, 10 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs, reproductions, drawings. "(P)rovides a lively picture of contrasting courtly scenes through the ages. It takes us from the paralysingly formal Court of Queen Anne to the outlandish ostentation of fifty years later when the Prince of Wales's dancing feet twinkled with 30,000 Pounds worth of diamonds attached to his shoe buckles. It conjures up the social butterflies of the Victorian age and a young debutante in the 1920's having difficulty tucking the essential three white feathers into her fashionably bobbed hair style. The fairy tale dresses and gold encrusted uniforms described and illustrated in this book have echoed or defied the fashions of the world right up to the present day. The last debutante to be presented at Court left Buckingham Palace in 1958, but in ceremonies such as the State Opening of Parliament courtly costume and tradition still linger with us." Spine is slightly twisted, minor toning on pastedowns. Dust jacket has light wear at bottom of front flap-fold, light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of rear panel, very soft crease down rear panel.

11 Due, John F. THE INTERCITY ELECTRIC RAILWAY INDUSTRY IN CANADA.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1966 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
118 pp, 10 1/8" H. Canadian Studies in Economics No.18. B&w photographs, maps, tables, graphs. "The intercity electric railway industry in Canada, which began in 1887, ended in 1959. Peak interest in the industry was between 1910 and 1920, the era of Sir Adam Beck's projected radial network that would have covered much of the southern portion of Ontario. But the plans came too late and the radial system was never built. The Canadian electric lines developed later than their United States counterparts, but lasted somewhat longer, and for a time in the 1950's there were more electric passenger-carrying trains in Canada than in the United States. This study describes the rise and decline of the electric railway industry in Canada. It includes a general history of the industry, the development of the lines, their financing and control, and a brief but fascinating account of the 25 individual companies which operated the roads." Tiny wrinkle at bottom of front hinge, tiny ink mark on rear board. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, small tear at top of front hinge - archivally taped.

188 pp, 8 5/8" H. B&w photographs. "This fascinating story of the life of one 'ordinary' Canadian is social history at its best - a first hand account of the home life, entertainment, working conditions and methods, manners and morals of past generations. He describes the Harvester's Special trains, the work of threshing gangs in the Weset, his apprenticeship as a bricklayer, and his subsequent travels around a young and growing country to find work. Many of the events which have become significant historically - Calgary's first Stampede, Alberta's first oil strike, the opening of Detroit's first Ford plant - gain new meaning when seen through the eyes of one who had some personal involvement or was personally affected by them." 18 Fraser, George MacDonald. Dust jacket art by Barbosa. FLASHMAN AND THE REDSKINS. FROM THE FLASHMAN PAPERS, 1849-50 AND 1875-76.
Collins, London, 1982, first edition.
479 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers. "When the tide of battle surged over the slopes of Little Bighorn, and Sitting Bull's braves gathered for the final charge that would sweep away the gallant remnant of Custer's 7th Cavalry, a clarion voice was heard above the crash of shots and whistle of arrows, the war-whoops and the pounding hooves: - Readers of his previous adventures will not fail to identify the speaker, or to recognise the tall, distinguished figure in evening dress, tails and whiskers, fleeing the stricken field: Sir Harry Flashman, V.C., veteran of countless retreats from battle and bedchamber, the most decorated coward of the Victorian age, was meeting his fate with the same matchless poltroone ry and deafness to duty and decency which had sustained him through a lifetime of dishonourable service, and endeared him to a generation of readers. But how the arch-cad of Dr Arnold's Rugby found himself in the climactic struggle of the Ame r i c a n West is only one chapter in an odyssey as hair-raising and scandalous as any in his six earlier volumes of memoirs. He traces it with his usual shameless candour and caustic humour, from the wagon-trains of the Forty-Niners, when he foug ht h is t er r ified way across the Plains in command of a bordello on wheels, to the holocaust of Bent's Fort and the horrors of scalp-hunting raids, Apache warpaths, dinner parties with Custer, captivity among the Sioux, confrontations with Pres ide nt Gra nt and W ild Bill Hickock, duels, escapes, conspiracies, and shoot-outs - to say nothing of passionate encounters with Indian belles, dusky beauties, enthusiastic widows, and mysterious adventuresses. This is Flashy's West as only he ca n de scr ibe it - th e W est, at once legendary and authentic, of Mangas Colorado and Kit Carson, of Custer and Spotted Tail, of Crazy Horse and the Deadwood stage, a pageant of savage warriors and Mountain Men, glory-hunting soldiers and gunfighter s, ga mble rs, ecc entri cs, scoundrels, and those extraordinary folk, white and Indian, who broke the trails or resisted the invasion." Book slightly cocked, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine/hinges, very light speckles of foxing on top of te xt blo ck. Dust jac ket ha s be en price clipped, has minor edge wear/wrinkling, soft wrinkles at top edge of rear flap, light rubbing. Very Good-/Very Good

Oxford Publishing, Oxford, (1976).
Unpaginated (approx 96 pp), hard cover in dust jacket. 166 photographs + photographic frontispiece, b&w route maps. "Southern Branch Lines were some of the most picturesque in the British Isles, passing over woodlands, over downs and to holiday se aside resorts. In spite of the Southern Railway's electrification policy, the Southern Branch line was the one place where steam could be seen with a variety of motive power before the coming of the diesel multiple units. Green was the p r o m i n e n t c olour of the Southern, on the stations, the coaches, the locomotive and even in the countryside around. Many Southern Branch Line trains were steam hauled long into the '50s and early '60s and the scenes in this book show this in t he f in al y ea rs of steam power."
