168 pp, small 4to (10 1/4" H). B&w and colour photographs and reproductions. "This collection is based on the life's work of David Ashe, who while employed as a draftsperson with the Town of Oakville compiled a listing of legal survey plans and registry information on the streets of Oakville. Being a researcher at heart, he went further and spent countless hours of his spare time gathering the history behind Oakville's streets. Joyce Burnell has picked a selection of Ashe's street histories and has added several Oakville landmarks - some of which are not longer here. Add to this, interesting archival images - some never before seen - combined with newer colour photographs and you have an intriguing reflection of Oakville's unique history. With close to 100 street name histories and over 40 landmarks featured, these interesting vignettes make for an easy, enjoyable read. This book links Oakville's street names to local, regional, national and international people, places and things. With such a diverse selection and varied inspirations, you may be surprised!" THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR., Bishop, James. Foreword by Lord Blake.
7 Bishop, James. Foreword by Lord Blake. THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
London Angus & Robertson 1982 0207148260 / 9780207148262 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
144 pp, 10 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w reproductions of photographs, drawings, advertisements. "The First World War, which claimed the lives of so many men on the battlefields of the Western Front, also profoundly affected the character and everyday life of the nation at home. It was the first 'total war' and the whole country contributed to the war effort. The unrelenting demands of the trenches eventually forced the Government to introduce conscription while, for those left behind, the state intervened more and more in the lives of its citizens. Hardships increased: food and fuel were in very short supply and rationing had to be imposed in 1916. The civilian population was also directly involved in the hostilities with the bombing raids of zeppelins and aeroplanes. But the war did bring some changes for the better. The salaried classes grew, working conditions improved and the war also helped liberate women who replaced men in factories and public services, and joined the armed forces. When the armistice finally came, in November 1918, Lloyd George promised 'a fit country for heroes to live in' - though the reality proved to be less Utopian. The Illustrated London News continued to publish throughout the First World War and was supplemented by The Illustrated War News. These magazines provided a vivid pictorial chronicle of contemporary events and enable us, today, to enter into the spirit of a bygone era. (The author) has written a fascinating and fully-documented account of these momentous years, complemented by over 200 pictures from the original issues." Light edge wear to boards. Dust jacket has one tiny edge tear, light foxing at top & bottom inside edges, very light edge wrinkling, a few tiny dents and faint line indentations on front panel.

320 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 184067430X Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions, drawings, maps. "This compelling narrative recounts the 28-year career of HMS Agamemnon, a 64-gun ship of the line which became one of the most famous vessels of the Royal Navy, commanded between 1793 and 1796 by Nelson, who always referred to her as his favourite ship. For three of the most critical decades of British naval history, Agamemnon was at th e c e n t r e of events, fighting at the Battle of the Saintes, Copenhagen and, of course, Trafalgar. Later she served in the West Indies, participating in the Battle of Santo Domingo, and in South American waters until she was wrecked in 1809 in Ma l do na do B ay , off the coast of present-day Uruguay. This fascinating account of Agamemnon's career highlights all the significant events of the period and portrays the authentic world of the Nelsonic era." 12 Donachie, David. Cover art by Geoff Hunt. NELSON: BREAKING THE LINE.
Orion, (London, 2002).
400 pp, large 8vo, soft cover. B&w maps. "It is 1799 and after Nelson's victory in the Nile he is feted at home as our greatest of heroes. Further victories against the French raise his popularity with the public at large to a fever pitch. However, at court, Nelson's ego and his love for the sultry Emma Hamilton, seen as little more than a whore by the courtiers surrounding George III, dog his progress. Yet with the war against France reaching its crucial stages, his country needs him more than ever. Perhaps with one more great victory he will be finally accepted at the heart of society...From the smoke of war, to the perfume of the court, and from the wilds of the Atlantic to the vicissitudes of sun-drenched Naples, this is the story of a great hero, a doomed love affair and a war that stretched across the world..." In this personal memoir, Priscilla Endicott chronicles the intense year she spent in Germany studying the principles of dressage with master trainer, Walter Christensen....(the book) presents a colorful view o f t h e r e m arkable world of international dressage and competition. Of primary importance are the relationships that affected the writer: her connection with her teacher, her horse, the apprentices, the riders, and other folk with whom she cam e i nt o cl o se c on tact. An inextricable part of the author's education was cultural. Through her eyes, we learn how the teaching of dressage and the German cultural spirit are mirror images, each reflecting the other...." 96 pp, small 4to (10" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0882544322 B&w photographs, reproductions, color and b&w uniform studies. "(This is) a survey of the uniforms worn by officers and men in the three combatant navies - Britain, France and S pain. John Fabb and Jack Cassin-Scott first set the uniforms in the context of life aboard a fighting ship during the Napoleonic wars - a severely disciplined, often brutal existence punctuated by battles, like Trafalgar, of terrifying blood i n e s s . They go on to describe the uniforms, rank by rank and nation by nation, from the splendour of the admiral in full dress, through each rank in full dress and undress versions until, at the bottom of the scale we find the starkly functio na l cl ot hi ng of the ordinary seaman. Particular care has been taken to present uniforms from original sources and Dress Regulations and, where appropriate, to show back views - so often neglected yet of much interest to, for example, modellers . In ad dit ion th e re is information on swords and decorations. In all cases the illustrations have been taken from contemporary sources." After describing the activities of the submarine service during and after World War I, (the author) details the careers of the Canadians who served with distinction in British submarines in all theatres of World War II. She goes on to examine the modern era, from the rebirth of the service in the 1960s to the present, and provides little-known information about the controversial Conservative initiative for nuclear-powered submarines in 1987. 18 Gates, David. THE SPANISH ULCER: A HISTORY OF THE PENINSULAR WAR.
George Allen & Unwin, London, (1986), Ist edition.
557 pp, 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. Over 100 maps and nearly 50 contemporary illustrations. "Napoleon considered the war in the Peninsula so insignificant that he rarely bothered to bring to it his military genius, relying on his marshals instead, and simulteaneously launching his disastrous Russian campaign in 1812. In late 1813 Wellington's army crossed the Pyrennes into the mainland of France. The 'Spanish Ulcer' had helped to kill its host...a war of unexpected savagery, of carnage at times so great as to be comparable to the First World War. But it was also a guerilla war, fought on beautiful but difficult terrain, where problems of supply loomed large. The British Navy, dominant at sea after Trafalgar, was able to provide crucial support to the hard-pressed, ill-equipped and often outnumbered forces fighting the French...a serious assessment of the opposing generals and their troops...analyzing in detail the social and political background." Conway Maritime Press, London, 1988.
178 pp, small 4to (10 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. INSCRIBED AND DATED BY AUTHOR ON TITLE PAGE. ISBN 0851774776 B&w photographs, maps, reproductions, drawings, colour plates. "Contrary to popular opinion, the defeat of the Armada was not the end of the Spanish Navy as a major maritime power. Indeed it underwent a real renaissance in the eighteenth century, and at the beginning of the Napoleonic Wars was the third largest navy in the world. Its ships were well designed and superbly built, and were officered by brave and dedicated professionals, who were nowhere near as ineffective in combat as often represented. This is the first English language book to look at Spanish naval forces in the century before Trafalgar, an d p r o v i des a long overdue reassessment of the aims and achievements of the service. Following a brief overview of the factors which shaped development and the main maritime events, more detailed chapters cover Spanish warship design and const ru c ti on , an d the much-maligned officer corps, concluding with sections on the battle itself and its significance to Spain....It is illustrated throughout with contemporary plans, paintings and ship models, and will prove stimulating reading for la ym an and s pec ia list alike." Shrewsbury Airlife 1999 1840370955 / 9781840370959 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
192 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). B&w photographs, drawings, map. "This is the definitive account of the loss of HMS Captain and the decade-long public controversy in parliament and the press which preceded and led to the building of the ship in unprecedented circumstances. HMS Captain was a very important vessel because she was the first sea-going turret warship built to provide all-round fire power. She was the first in a line of innovative designs heralding the great development of warships that reached its peak before World War Two. The lengthy controversy involved a row between Captain Cowper Phipps Coles, RN, the designer of Captain and inventor of the turntable turret gun for warships, and the Admiralty Constructor, Edward Reed, who regarded the design of the vessel as potentially dangerous. Each had his supporters, and the Admiralty made a fatal compromise, for on the night of 6/7 September 1870, only four months after being commissioned, the new ship capsized in a gale off Finisterre and sank immediately. The death toll of British seamen was greater than at the Battle of Trafalgar. (The author) has previously written on the ship and the tragedy, but he has recently discovered new and previously unknown information that changes history in relation to the loss of the ship - information that appears to have been suppressed at the court martial of the 18 surviviors."
