414 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "Realizing from mediaeval documents that the initial Nova Scotia refuge of A.D. 1398 must have harboured many Grail believers, and that the secret colony must have expanded, Bradley began to trace evidence of Grail Knights from Nova Scotia, through New Brunswick to the St. Lawrence River, and on to the Great Lakes as far as Niagara, New York State, and central Pennsylvania. Evidence of their presence has been uncovered on both the Canadian and American sides of this great waterway. Unpaginated, 11 1/8" H. "Envisioning the first book of the Bible like no one before him, R. Crumb, the legendary illustrator, retells the story of Genesis in a profoundly honest and deeply moving way. Originally thinking that he would do a takeoff of Adam and Eve, Crumb became so fascinated with the Bible's language, 'a text so great and so strange that it lends itself readily to graphic depictions', that he decided instead to do a literal interpretation assembled primarily from the translations of Robert Alter and the King James Version. Now readers of every persuasion - Crumb fans, comic book lovers, and believers - can gain astonishing new insights from these harrowing, tragic and even juicy stories." Profusely illustrated in b&w comic strip fashion at an "adult" level, with an Introduction and Commentary by Crumb. Dust jacket has some very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top edge.

"(S)howcases twenty beguiling tales for the child-that-was and the adult-that-is, penned by twenty of the most creative artists in contemporary American literature. Here dissected are the darker anatomies of the timeless, seemingly simple stories we have long loved. Here wonder and truth have serious bite. A lovelorn prince seeking his father's blessing concocts a fantastic tale of a witch, a tower, and lustrous long hair - A pair of accursed red boots punishes a beautiful dancer for her pride - A troll-killing, princess-rescuing warrior is compelled to consider events from his adversaries' point of view - In a blistering tell-all memoir, Goldilocks reveals the sordid truth about her brutal foster parent, Papa Bear - . Rich, surprising, funny, exotic, and unsettling, these twenty new yarns and poems offer exceptional new treasures - as they brilliantly reveal lusts and jealousies, foibles, hatreds, and dangerous obsessions, the things that slyly lurk in the midnight interior of oft-told tales." 16 Erickson, Carolly. ROYAL PANOPLY: BRIEF LIVES OF THE ENGLISH MONARCHS.
New York St. Martin's Press, New York, 2006. 2006 0312316437 / 9780312316433 Hard Cover Fine Near Fine
351 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Colour and b&w plates. "(This book) replaces the stereotypic images with true multifaceted portraits, bringing each of England's rulers to fully fleshed life. Here is the puny Charles I, nervous, tense, and socially awkward; the frail, slight Richard II, melancholic and sad; the homosexual James I with his handsome favorites; the stuttering William II and the stammering George VI. Here also is the choleric, violent William I (William the Conqueror), bred among the chaos of constant warfare in his native Normandy, ceaselessly embattled once he became King of England. The unkingly Henry III, mild and charitable, despised by his barons for his weakness. And the well-meaning, deeply affectionate Queen Anne, whose many children all died before they could reach adulthood and who was so heavy and gout-ridden that she had to be carried to her coronation. Each ruler's life has a unique story, and 'Royal Panoply' tells that story with award-winning historian Carolly Erickson's characteristic blend of scholarly authenticity, engaging prose, and psychological insight. The focus is not merely on the tale of each reign, but on each king's or queen's entire life, for some rulers did not come to the throne until middle age, and had already led full lives before their accession. Here they are in full panoply: feudal warriors, Renaissance icons, Regency dandies, and modern constitutional monarchs, fascinating characters all." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

ISBN 0356175375 "John Freeman has spent a year investigating the worlds behind the closed doors of the Capital, unearthing an incredible variety of important interiors. The best and most exciting of these have been brought together in this book, revealing ninety unique views of London, many of which have been photographed here for the first time. The result is the mo s t authoritative and well-researched book on the hidden and unappreciated interiors of London, coveirng not only buildings from all periods of history but sites that represent many of the aspects of London life. Five thematic chapters put each in di vi d ual interior into context, making the book not only a stunning visual and descriptive account of the multifarious worlds inside London, but an important survey of London's architecture and design. The chapters include 'The Grand Scale', a s tud y o f the most opulent and grand interiors, with unusual angles on the well-known - such as the Albert Hall and Old Bailey - as well as impressive but less accessible sites such as the Granada Cinema at Tooting. 'Into the Twentieth Century' rev eals the i nnovative decors - successful or otherwise - of recent years; 'The Decorative Tradition' celebrates the richness of period and contemporary detailing in London; 'Moments Preserved' evokes not only nostalgia but wonders at the perfect pr eserv ation or restoration of a period room or moment in time (with a plea therefore for their further protection). 'Private Lives' explores the personal homes that have been transformed in traditional and eclectic styles by their owners, and als o prov ides g limp ses into private habitats, from the hallowed halls of the Reform Club to a Chelsea houseboat and even a 'taxi driver' eatery." PALACE EXTRAORDINARY: THE STORY OF ST JAMES'S., Graves, Charles.
20 Graves, Charles. PALACE EXTRAORDINARY: THE STORY OF ST JAMES'S.
Cassell, London, 1963, first edition.
245 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "St James's Palace is one of London's most famous landmarks, its Tudor clock-tower familiar to residents and visitors in its dramatic position at the far end of St James's Street. T here is, however, no other building in London of comparable age about which so little is known, since the public is rarely allowed beyond the well-known facade. Ironically enough, the site on which Henry VIII had the palace built for Anne B o l e y n w a s once occupied by a nunnery, but the odour of sanctity seems soon to have dispersed and its history revolves around ladies of a lighter kind. Here lived Prince Henry, the brilliant elder son of James I who, had he survived to inh e ri t th e th ro n e, w ould probably have altered completely the course of history. But on his death his brother Charles took the fatal path which led finally to imprisonment in the Guard Room at St James's, from where he walked across the park to th e sca ff old . In 16 97 the palace was officially designated the Court of St James's and from then until the accession of Victoria was the sovereign's official residence. Here died George III, the record of whose last mad years makes poigna nt read in g in th is p os t-F reud ian age. But was it on him alone that the curse of madness lay? What was behind the ghastly murder of Sellis, the Duke of Cumberland's servant, found dead in bed with his head nearly severed from his body? Th e r iddle of his deat h has ne ver been solv ed but it seems likely that the royal Duke was himself implicated. Although the main flood of history has been diverted to other channels and the palace now lives mostly in the past, there are yet lin ks w ith th e tw entie th ce ntury: if the pala ce gh ost - for there is, of course, a ghost - looks over the shoulder of an official in the Lord Chamberlain's office when plays are being scrutinized before performance, the bawdy situations in t hem w ill har dly c ause h er to raise a n eye brow. Life at St James's was always like that." Samll store label on front pastedown, a few tiny foxing marks on top of textblock. Dust jacket has areas of light edge wear/wrinkling, very light ru bbing, tiny pu ncture on spi ne. V ery Good /Very Good
