233 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0802113825 B&w photographs, map, plan. "On December 21, 1988, a small block of plastic explosive tore apart a New York-bound Boeing 747, killing 259 passengers and crew and taking the lives of 11 residents of the tiny Scottish village of Lockerbie. The world followed in horrified fascination as a tale of international terrorism, airline ineptitude, and political gamesmanship unfolded. But another story was lost among the headli nes. Making use of more than three years of research and interviews, (the authors) present the whole picture of the disaster, including the story behind this tragic event: that of the people who died and the family members - who were left to d e a l w ith the devastating aftermath of the explosion. (This) is the shocking tale of the bombing, told through the family members' personal experiences: housewives who became adroit at handling the media; a doctor who became an authority on ex pl os iv es ; a real estate saleswoman who became an expert on terrorist groups; and the many others who sacrificed careers and futures in order to reform airline security and bring the terrorists to justice. The authors trace the history of the Pan Am 10 3 b om bin g, starting with the incidents that incited terrorists to attack and culminating with the indictment of two Libyans in November of 1991." "The B-24 Liberator was built in greater numbers than any other US warplane, yet its combat crews live, even today, in th e shadow of the less plentiful, but better-known, B-17. Accounts of the 'Mighty Eighth' in Europe, and indeed many of the books and films that emerged from the greatest air campaign in history, often overlook the B-24, even though it was in a c t i o n for as long as the Flying Fortress, and participated in just as many perilous daylight bombing missions. Twenty-one bomb groups saw action with the Eighth from 9 October 1942 through to VE-Day, operating both from airfields in the 'bombe r tr ia ng le ' in East Anglia, and North Africa. Providing an overview of Eighth AF B-24 operations, this volume is the second of four within this series chronicling the role of the Liberator in World War 2." 307 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "On average, people squander forty days annually compensating for things they've forgotten. Joshua Foer used to be one of those people. But after a year of memory training, he found himself in the finals of the U.S. Memory Championship. Even more important, he found a vital truth we too often forget: In every way that matters, we are the sum of our memories. (This book) draws on cutting-edge research, a surprising cultural history of memory, and venerable tricks of the mentalist's trade to transform our understanding of human remembering. Under the tutelage of top 'mental athletes', Foer learns ancient techniques once employed by Cicero to memorize his speeches and by medieval scholars to memorize entire books. Using methods that have been largely forgotten, he discovers that we can all dramatically improve our memories." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. "During the Battle of the Atlantic, Dr. George Hendry had just finished performing two major surgical operations on board t he destroyer HMCS Ottawa when his ship was ambushed by 13 German U-boats. Canadian warships like Ottawa had inadequate radar sets that were incapable of detecting submarines approaching in the dark. On September 13, 1942, U-91 stole in and t o r p e d o ed Ottawa, sinking her in 20 minutes. Utterly exhausted, Dr. Hendry was lost along with 113 of his shipmates. George Hendry was a much-loved man, a great university athlete, and a very good doctor. Unfortunately, he was also naive and t oo t ru st in g. Michael Joseph, London, 1957, first edition.
188 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. In this latest installment in the 'Doctor' series, "Gordon soon discovers that a busy practitioner needs a wife as much as a stethoscope. As his other friend, Tony Benskin, observes, 'The patients don 't like you messing about with their wives unless they know you've got one of your own at home'. And of course there has to be someone to answer the telephone, open the door, keep the N.H.S. records, cook the dinner, do the laundry - and pro t e c t h i m from some of his female patients. Dr Gordon's only worry is that the right girl will turn up. She does, but only after an unfortunate love affair which should illustrate to patients the dangers of failling for the same nurse as thei r do ct or . He proposes, is accepted, and soon comes to the conclusion that a couple who can survive the preparations for their wedding can overcome pretty well everything in their married life to come. Despite relatives and real estate, solicit or s a nd sal es m en, bridesmaids and builders, and the doubtful though undoubted assistance of his friends, Dr Gordon finally marries the girl - but only just." 16 Hancock, Freddie and Nathan, David. HANCOCK.
Kimber, London, 1969.
191 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "(Tony Hancock) led a life fragmented by laughter and despair as he ceaselessly sought an unattainable truth in comedy until it ended in a dreary room in Australia with one final drink, one last handful of pills. But before that happened he created more laughter for more people than any other man of his generation. The search for the truth about this extraordinarily complex clown involves drawing on the memories and perceptions of writers like Alan Simpson and Ray Galton, who, in a sense, hewed the Half Hour Hancock out of the whole man, J.B. Priestley who put him, thinly disguised, into a novel, Phillip Oakes, who wrote him a screenplay, and Denis Norden who w rote material he convulsed audiences with for years. There are, too, the writer/performers like John Osborne, Spike Milligan and Eric Sykes, the comedians who knew him or worked with him like Harry Secombe, Joan Turner, Kenneth Williams and Grah a m Stark; showman Bernard Delfont; actress Sylvia Syms, his radio and television directors Dennis Main Wilson and Duncan Wood and scores of others of lesser fame but crucial importance in Hancock's life." Bodley Head / Army Records Society, London, 1988, first edition.
418 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0370312279 Color portrait frontispiece. "Viscount Barrington served as Secretary at War under George II and George III from 1755 to 1778, with only a few years' interval during which he held other offices of state. The collection of documents presented in this volume is designed to show how the War Office worked during the incumbency of this unusually conscientious and effective minister, and throws a remarkable light on an i m p o r t a n t area of eighteenth-century history and on the way in which public policy and administration were connected. Why, for example, was the War Office organized and managed in the way it was? Why was its incumbent furnished with a bri ef i n re al it y so i m portant and yet technically so restricted in its public responsibility? Was he really (as he often claimed) without power? Or, if he did have power, of what sort was it? How successfully could any one man deal with a ro le whi ch re qui red h im at ti mes to perform as an official in a department, at others as a courtier and confidential secretary to a monarch, and at others as a spokesman in Parliament, as well as composing quarrels within the army, and between the arm y a nd t he p ubli c? Al tho ugh there can be no complete solution to these problems, either for an eighteenth-century Secretary of War or for a twentieth-century historian, this collection, divided up thematically to illustrate the varie d re spons ibil ites borne by t he War Offi ce, provides material for a better understanding of them." Cependant, la tragique attaque lancee par des terroristes sur les tours jumelles du World Trade Center a New York, le 11 septembre 2001, a considerablement modifie leur image. Les SOF sont devenues depuis des forces de premier plan. Les essais qui forment cet ouvrage concernant les SOF ont ete rediges par des experts en la matiere. 378 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). Pictorial endpapers, many b&w and color photographs and reproductions. "(T)races the history of children's books in Britain, the USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand from the very first printed books through to the present day. (This book) takes 'children's literature' to mean books designed for children as well as books for childhood, and so embraces everything from religious tracts to multi-media comics, from the 'classic' to the unashamedly popular. Written by leading experts, this survey shows that children's literature reflects how childhood has been defined, controlled, and appreciated at different times. It reveals how adults have explored questions of power, entertainment, sexuality, and equality through their writing for children, and demonstrates how the borders between what is adult and what children's fiction are routinely blurred. A series of chronological chapters charts the 'history' which begins in the sixteenth century with grammars and ABCs. We move from books of instruction through to fables and fantasies in the eighteenth century, from reward books and romance to school stories in the nineteenth, and on to comics, colour picture-books, and science fiction in (the twentieth century). Throughout the text, books, authors, illustrators, publishers, and children readers are discussed within their wider social, political, and economic environment. Richly illustrated in black and white and colour, and with a section on further reading, a full index, and a chronology which places books for children in their literary and political context, this is a fascinating study which will delight all readers, young and old."
