Seattle, Washington Superior Publishing 1974 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good
192 pp, 10 3/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, advertisements, articles, reproductions. "This 'scrapbook' is as absorbing as an old family album that carries one back through the decades. Pictures and yarns of the early 1800s wheat-farming era, when harvesting was a matter of hand labor - cutting with scythes - bundling into sheaves - and the women following the crews to cook up husky meals for hungry men. Then came Cyrus McCormick's mechanical reaper. Although many were dubious about the machine, it proved itself highly competent, and the whole picture changed. Harvest-ing would never be the same again. Following the success of the reaper came many other inventions that revolutionized wheat farming and all of agriculture. But wheat farming still required plenty of people-power." 79 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). "In this daring and original play, Timothy Findley brings together none other than William Shakespeare and the formidable Virgin Queen, Elizabeth I. What makes a man a man and a woman a woman? Late at night on the eve of her former lover's execution, this is the very question Queen Elizabeth wrestles with as she descends to the stable lodgings of Shakespeare's players. Her unexpected arrival disturbs the playwright and his actors and provokes the rapier-sharp, haughty indifference of Ned, Shakespeare's genius performer of women's roles - himself now aged, ill and facing his mortality. In their vitriolic confrontation, the actor, the playwright, and the queen come to startling revelations about sex, identity, humanity, and love." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

362 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). "(G)limpses the world of actors as experienced by Canadian performers. In their own words, more than two hundred actors share shocking, funny, terrifying, sometimes poignant stories of adventures, mishaps, gaffes, disasters, and moments of joy they have known in the course of their working lives on and off stage. The collection of over 450 stories begins with tales of 'The Audition' and early performing experiences of some familiers faces, such as Wayne and Schuster, William Shatner, Robert Goulet, and Martin Short. It chronicles life on tour from Russia to the Ozarks to above the Arctic circle. It elucidates the trials of props, sets, and wardrobe that refuse to function as intended, the agonies of surviving the unexpected, whether it be a four-legged cast member going into labour, an actor who has somehow forgotten an entrance, a sudden on-stage bout with very real food poisoning, or the often hilarious contributions from members of the audience." THE DESTRUCTION OF LORD RAGLAN: A TRAGEDY OF THE CRIMEAN WAR 1854-55., Hibbert, Christopher.
17 Hibbert, Christopher. THE DESTRUCTION OF LORD RAGLAN: A TRAGEDY OF THE CRIMEAN WAR 1854-55.
Harmondsworth Viking 1984 0670800007 / 9780670800001 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
337 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w maps, photographs. "In March 1954 an army of 30,000 men sailed from Portsmouth to the Crimea to defend the crumbling Turkish empire against invasion by Russia. Led by Lord Raglan, a veteran of Waterloo but, after forty years, out of touch with the realities of warfare, they embarked for an unknown country to defend a cause few understood or even cared about. Nevertheless enthusiasm and confidence were high among the men of what 'The Times' described as 'the finest army that has ever left these shores'. The euphoria was short-lived and the campaign quickly degenerated into a series of humiliating military disasters caused largely by incompetence at the highest level, bitter personal rivalries among the divisional commanders, and criminal inadequacies of transport, clothing and medical supplies. A scapegoat had to be found if the British Government was to survive, and it was Lord Raglan who bore the brunt of the virulent anti-war campaign mounted by the newspapers. Misunderstood and maligned by his contemporaries, his reputation blackened for posterity, Lord Raglan died a broken man only weeks before the French finally defeated the Russians at Malakoff, with little help from their demoralized British allies. In this fair, scholarly and vividly written account of the confused tragedy of the Crimea, Christopher Hibbert has done much to redeem the reputation of a sensitive and courageous man who simply lacked the necessary qualities of leadership and intellect to extricate his army with honour from an ill-conceived and bloody campaign. Drawing on contemporary letters, papers, reports and diaries, the author strongly suggests that the chaos of the Crimea was the result, not of one man's neglect, but of a whole nation's folly." 2" split at top of gutter between index pages 336/337, one tiny corner bump. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, light rubbing - mainly on rear panel, two wrinkles in laminate down front cover.
