B&w maps/battle plans. "Historians and students of the Burgoyne Cam paigns have, for over 125 years, referred to the Battles of Saratoga as the most decisive series of engagements of the American Revolution....Yet, with all its acknowledged importance, the campaign remains one of the least accurately portr a y e d a n d m ost poorly researched in American history....To do battle with (the) myriad of myths, inaccuracies, and misinterpretations, Colonel John R. Elting brings an impressive arsenal of professional historical skills and background knowle dg e. .. .i t i s no t s urprising that his analysis of the practical problems of campaigning and logistics in the Northern Department is masterful. Supply and transportation problems played a major role in Burgoyne's defeat. By using 'Mad Johnn y' M'A lpi ne' s 'Na rr ati ve ' - extensively yet critically and in balance with a number of other primary sources - these problems are brought into proper perspective...(Colonel Elting dissects) the role of the British artillery on Sugar Loaf Hil l ( Moun t De fian ce ) in th e ev acu atio n of Fort Ticonderoga, the effect of the death of Jane McCrea on the mustering of the American militia against Burgoyne, and the tactical importance of the terrain west of the American fortified lines nea r th e Nei lson Farm. ( He) b ring s new pri mary source material to bear upon the investigation of the Burgoyne Campaign. 'A Military Journal' - thought to be written by Richard Pope (an officer of the 47th Regiment of Foot) and the 'Memoirs' o f E. Schuel er vo n Send en ( a Brun swick offic er of the Regiment von Specht) add fresh and valuable information." From the Foreword. Previous owner's small stamp on front pastedown. Very Good+

Simultaneously, Brigadier Barry St. Leger led a supporting flank attack from Lake Ontario into the Mohawk Valley. His expedition had three major goals: recruit the Iroquois and their allies; defeat the rebel troops in the Mohawk region; and join Burgoyne's Grand Army at Albany. St. Leger's Indians and loyalists shattered the Mohawk Valley militia at Oriskany on their march to relieve Fort Stanwix; however, the fort's stubborn defenders stalled St. Leger until he was d u p e d into retreating. He then attempted to reinforce Burgoyne, but was halted at Ticonderoga due to lack of transport. The grand campaign from Canada ended in catastrophe when word came of Burgoyne's surrender. The remaining troops destroy e d Ti co nd er oga and withdrew to Canada." Interior - tiny crease at top/bottom corner of first few pages, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks.
