IN THE TEETH OF THE WIND: THE STORY OF A NAVAL PILOT ON THE WESTERN FRONT, 1916-1918., Bartlett, C.P.O., Squadron Leader. Edited by his son, Nick Bartlett.
1 Bartlett, C.P.O., Squadron Leader. Edited by his son, Nick Bartlett. IN THE TEETH OF THE WIND: THE STORY OF A NAVAL PILOT ON THE WESTERN FRONT, 1916-1918.
Leo Cooper, London, 1994, revised edition.
159 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850523184 B&w photographs, diagram, map. "Philip Bartlett's account is a unique and fascinating record of a pilot's life in the dawn of aerial warfare and, as a history, of the first use of the bomber in war, strangely, by the Navy's aircraft. Flying by day and night alone, without navigational aids, the author moves from attacks on the U-boat bases to bombing the German Gothas as they prepared to raid London, and then to the s upport of Haig's drive to the coast which ended in the mud of Passchendaele. The climax in March, 1918, is reached when the author's squadron finds itself directly in the path of Ludendorff's massive thrust, which broke the British Vth Ar m y a n d n e a rly decided the War. Attacked by Richthofen's aces, No 5 Squadron RNAS flew continuous desperate missions against the advancing troops from aerodromes which were over-run time after time. At a time when the life of a pilot was re ck on e d in w e ek s, t he author flew 101 missions, enduring the rigours of flying without heat or oxygen, with hesitant engines, no parachutes and the attention of German fighters. Yet there is continual evidence of the pure joy of flying and won der a t the sh ee r b eau ty of the sky." Light browning to top edge of textblock, slight waviness to top/bottom edges of textblock. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling at top edge. Very Good+/Very Good

7 Devins, Joseph H., Jr. THE VAAGSO RAID: THE COMMANDO ATTACK THAT CHANGED THE COURSE OF WORLD WAR II.
Chilton, Philadelphia, 1968.
222 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, maps. "In the dark, early morning hours of Saturday, December 27, 1941, a small force of British warships escorting two camouflaged excursion steamers slipped past a German lookou t station and sailed boldly into one of the great fjords of occupied Norway. Aboard the two steamers a tense group of British and Norwegian commandos rechecked their weapons and waited for the reaction of the nearby German coastal batteries . T h e t arget: Vaagso Island. Earlier thrusts by British raiding parties had deliberately avoided heavily defended sectors of the enemy coast. This was to be the first raid of the war on a fortified postion, a demonstration that the offensive sp i ri t wa s s trong in Britain despite the Nazi conquest of the Continent and the humiliation of Dunkerque. But the consequences of this sortie would reach far beyond the snow-covered mountains which reverberated that Saturday with the thud of ex pl o sio ns an d the snarl and rattle of sub-machine guns. The British gained vital experience in inter-service cooperation and information that would prove invaluable in subsequent raids on Dieppe and St. Nazaire. But in Berlin, Hitler was asto nis he d at th e da ri ng a nd apparent readiness of the British to hurl their forces into the teeth of a well prepared defense. As a result, he made decisions of major strategic importance. This is the story of a group of courageous men, of how they de velop ed a new typ e of fighting force, how they fought, how they died, and how they altered the course of the war." One tiny corner bump, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light edge wear, two small light soiling marks at bott om of rear pas tedown , lig ht da mpne ss ma rks at top/bottom of front board. 211 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, drawings, maps. "Over 30,000 whales were killed in the Pacific Northwest between 1905 and 1972, and the business of capturing and processing them created its own mythology. Here are tales of the monsters that almost got away, of whales that rammed the ships trying to capture them, and of the whalers themselves, who lived always on the edge of danger, risking life and limb in pursuit of the biggest animals in the world. Many of the old whalers were avid collectors of maritime lore, and their stories of whales and of the life in the sea - the sperm whale's ambergris, freaks of enormous size or those with legs, and giant octopus and sea monsters - create a vivid background to William Hagelund's very personal history of whaling on the west coast." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, small ink mark at top edge of rear board. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor rubbing on rear panel.

To the right was the steep ridge of Kubish, edged like a set of teeth and narrow as a saw blade. It wasn't the easiest place on earth to defend. Unless you happened to have the eccentric optimism and almost absurd courage of Flying Officer Anthony Augustus Boumphrey (pronounced 'Bumfree'). He had to make do with about forty planes - all training machines, most of them biplanes - not much of a match against sophisticated Messerschmitts and the surrounding enemy's eighteen-pounder guns. But Boumphrey and his 'Belles', as his men were known, were not prepared to suffer the indignity of being taken prisoner. A nd if the battle was one they might not win, there certainly would be no surrender." Very slight cigarette odor, minor soiling on fore-edge of textblock, small bump at top/bottom of spine. 14 Marquis, Don. Edited with preface by Jeff Adams. Illustrated by Ed Frascino. ARCHYOLOGY II (THE FINAL DIG). THE LONG LOST TALES OF ARCHY AND MEHITABEL.
University Press of New England, Hanover,
121 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0874518539 B&w cartoons. "In this second and final volume 'composed' by Archy, the literary cockroach, the wonderfully whimsical insect and his fractious feline friend Mehitabel, engage in misadventures large and small and comment with quirky accuracy on the common state of humanity. Previously unpublished in book form and literally recovered from a steamer trunk by editor Jeff Adams, these stories are the product of Don Ma r q u i s , a New York columnist and raconteur who was one of America's most popular humorists during the early 20th century. Ungrammatical as they may be, Archy's wry insights are a true delight, for, as he puts it, 'one advantage to being a coc kr oa ch i s th a t i see things from the under side'. From that unique perspective we follow the continuing saga of Archy, the Cockroach Detective, a spoof on the gumshoe genre in which the six-legged private eye encounters a raja, his chorus-gi rl har em, Bo ls hev is t tw ins, an Egyptologist, seven sister manicurists, and a set of bejeweled false teeth. Accompanied by the inspired drawings of cartoonist Ed Frascino, these new Archy tales are, Adams writes, 'classic American humor, as v ivi d an d am usin g t oday as t hey were decades ago'." Faber and Faber, London, (1972), Ist edition.
190 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "Life for Zelma McCrum was such a highly coloured affair that she put the rest of the Third Form in the shade and it was inevitably Zelma who spread the most sensational piece of news that the form - or anyone else - had ever heard. All the same, Zelma wasn't the only person to whom things happened - what about Emmy Pratt, who to the surprise of even her closest friend was chosen to be May Queen, what about Bill Timmins, newly appointed monitor, and his first experience of power, or Zelma's aunt whose stylish hat was caught in the teeth of the dinosaur in the Museum, or Mr. Bishop who always expected the worst and sometimes got it? These stories about the experiences of pupils in a country school are funny, perceptive and true to life." 448 pp, large 8vo (9 1/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "Here we have the story of th slow and sometimes agaonizing progress of the Union armies to victory. Grant and Sherman and Lincoln dominate. On the political front, Linc oln is reelected and the Union becomes even more solidly organized; on the military front, Grant sets his bulldog teeth in the neck of his great adversary Lee, and Sherman cuts a swath of desolation through the richest parts of the South. Vi c t o r y w hen it comes at Appomattox, is a quiet victory, but almost at once the murder of President Lincoln and the succession of President Andrew Johnson present the nation with new problems as terrible if not as immediate as the battles. The wo rk c lo se s w ith an account of the demobilization of the armies and the nation's return to the pursuits of peace which, despite the war, are seen to have widened in scope and to be filled with new opportunities."
