2 Allen, Gillian. YESTERDAY'S TOWN: WELLINGTON. A DIARY OF A WEST COUNTRY TOWN IN THE 19th CENTURY.
Buckingham Barracuda 1987 0860232921 / 9780860232926 Limited Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
124 pp, small 4to (10 7/16" H). Number 368 of a limited edition. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "(I)t is the detail of the 19th century record which attracts us most; the people who lived in specific houses like the Millers, Langleys and Merediths; the controversy about the three posts outside the White Hart Inn; the shops that changed from bank to fishmonger, from watchmaker to cobbler, from Bell Inn to basketmaker; the man who dug a canal in his garden to employ poor people; the ten-year-old who died when her pinny caught fire; the horse that took nine men to the gallows. Here too is the fire brigade whose captain refused entry to his own team as his cottage blazed away; the riots when a cemetery was proposed; the earliest chapels built and closed; Ann Pain, who stole a bullock's heart on St. Valentine's Day; Mr Marks, who lost 50 Pounds at Wellington Fair; elderly Maria Strippling, sentenced to seven days' labour for pinching threepennorth of hay; and the 4,703 tramps who came to Wellington in 1865. Transport changed the town, when the turnpikes, canal, railway and finally motorcar came. The first car owner was heavily fined; the first acceptable motor hit the Town Hall. Taverns prospered, and there were 75 at one time or another. Thirteen survive. The greatest change of all came with the Great War - 'our old world has gone forever' said the local 'rag'. That world is recreated (here) - in a fluent, fascinating and fact-packed narrative and some 200 pictures, many of them rare, and most unique to this book." Book is slightly cocked. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top edge, a few small faint indentations on panels, minor rubbing.

THE TOWN OF YORK 1793-1815: A COLLECTION OF DOCUMENTS OF EARLY TORONTO., Firth, Edith G., edited and with introduction by.
5 Firth, Edith G., edited and with introduction by. THE TOWN OF YORK 1793-1815: A COLLECTION OF DOCUMENTS OF EARLY TORONTO.
Toronto Champlain Society for Government of Canada/University of Toronto Press 1962 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
368 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Red cloth with gold lettering/banding on spine. "(T)ells the history of the town of York (Toronto) from the arrival of John Graves Simcoe in 1793 through the War of 1812 until news of the peace reached its citizens in the spring of 1815. The selection of contemporary documents attempts to show why York was chosen for a settlement in the first place, the kind of community that developed, and the effect of the War on that community. Apart from the normal problems connected with the establishment of any settlement, the officials of the town of York were faced with the necessity of creating a worthy capital city for Upper Canada at a time when Kingston, because of its pre-eminence as the military and naval centre of the province and its commercial prosperity, overhadowed all other settlements. The book also illustrates the gradual integration into a corporate body of many diverse elements - senior government officials, discharged soldiers, tradesmen, labourers - so that by 1815 the characteristics of modern Toronto were beginning to be evident in York. This collection of documents and the editor's very full Introduction will provide the student of local history with much primary material and the general reader with an interesting account of the early years of the modern metropolis of Toronto. Minor wear at corners, 50% of text block edges are lightly browned. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has one or two tiny edge chips and tears, light edge creases at top of rear panel, light edge wear/wrinkling, very light rubbing.

SOUTH OF LISBON: WINTER TRAVELS IN SOUTHERN PORTUGAL., Huggett, Frank E.
7 Huggett, Frank E. SOUTH OF LISBON: WINTER TRAVELS IN SOUTHERN PORTUGAL.
Victor Gollancz, London, 1960, first edition.
224 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "Frank Hugget went to Portugal to see, to understand, and to interpret. He went first to the capital, Lisbon, and then journeyed down through the country to its most southerly province, Algarve....For several months he settled in the small town of Albufeira, and here, living with and getting to know the inhabitants, he explored and sought to isolate the national characteristics of the Portuguese....(From the beginning he became) conscious of the very endearing, if sometimes maddening, qualities of the Portuguese people - their politeness and charm, and a great kindness that comes before their own comfort, customs and conventions....He sees Portugal (in 1960) as a de sperately backward and impoverished land....He sees a society in which, as a corollary to poverty and caste, there is a fearful rigidity in the relationship between men and women. The frustrated lover, he says, might be the symbol of the P o r t u g u e s e - and since the passion of men is frustrated and can find its outlet only in marriage (which is manoeuvred and controlled by the matriarch and therefore conditioned by an older generation), the relationship between the sexes is ov er -i de al is ed , an d finally disappoints, sending the man back to his dreams and imprisoning the woman in the home. It is, he suggests, this frustrated idealism which lies at the root of that most national emotion, 'saudade', and inspires th e ' fad os' of Li sbo n a nd Co im bra....recalling the era of Portugal's greatness - when her seamen voyaged round the Cape (not then of 'good hope'), on to the far Indies and around the world, pioneering into the unknown with fantastic courage - Mr . Hu gget t fi nds the same gr eatn ess of spirit very much alive today: in, for instance, that unique complex of Portuguese feelings and attitudes known as 'loucura', which is 'more than vanity, more than bravery, more than recklessness, mor e tha n mad ness, alth ough it conta ins all t hese elements. It is a needlessly mad courage which tempts fate to destroy and introduces into some simple action a complicated danger'. Mr. Huggett analyses, in detail and with penetration, the na ture o f the Salaza r dict ators hip. ...the pro spect of an y revolutionary change of regime remains, in (the author's) opinion, remote. In addition to its value as a portrait of a little-known country and a really thoughful interpretation of its people , the book is also a very vivid and pe rsuas ive pi ece of writing: there are splendid descriptions of town and country, shore and sea." Very light browning on free endpapers, small foxing mark on front endpapers, small bookstore label on front paste down, ti ny soili ng mar k on c ontents page, light b rowning to edges of textblock. Dust jacket has light foxing marks on inside surface, very light edge wear, two tiny closed tears with creases - archivally taped, light rubbing a nd soilin g on re ar panel, faint fo xing ma rks on panels - mainl y rear p anel. 17 Moore, Peter. DAMN HIS BLOOD: BEING A TRUE AND DETAILED HISTORY OF THE MOST BARBAROUS AND INHUMANE MURDER AT ODDINGLEY AND THE QUICK AND AWFUL RETRIBUTION.
London Chatto & Windus 2012 0701186445 / 9780701186449 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
364 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w illustrations. "The brutal murder of the Reverend George Parker in the secluded village of Oddingley on Midsummer's Day in 1806 gripped everyone from the Home Secretary in London to newspapermen across the country. It was a strange and stubborn case. The investigation lasted more than two decades, involving multiple inquests, judges and coroners, each more determined than the last to solve Oddingley's most gruesome crime - or crimes, as it turned out. (This) is a fascinating glimpse into English rural life at the beginning of the nineteenth century, so often epitomised by the civilised drawing rooms of Jane Austen or the rural idylls of Constable. England was exhausted and nervous, dogged by Pitt's war taxes, mounting inflation and the lingering threat of a French invasion. Violence was rife, particularly in rural communities where outsiders were regarded with deep suspicion. With a cast of characters straight out of Hardy, 'Damn His Blood' is a nail-biting true story of brutality, greed and ruthlessness which brings an elusive society vividly back to life."
