MERE ANARCHY., Allen, Woody.
5 Allen, Woody. MERE ANARCHY.
Random House, New York, 2007, first edition.
160 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 9781400066414 "Here, in his first collection since his three hilarious classics 'Getting Even', 'Without Feathers', and 'Side Effects', Woody Allen has managed to write a book that not only a nswers the most profound questions of human existence but is also the perfect size to place under any short table leg to prevent wobbling. 'I awoke Friday, and because the universe is expanding it took me longer than usual to find my robe,' h e e x p l ains in a piece on physics called 'Strung Out'. In other flights of inspirational sanity we are introduced to a cast of characters only Allen could imagine: Jasper Nutmeat, Flanders Mealworm, and the independent film mogul E. Coli Big g s, j u st t o na me a few. Whether he is writing about art, sex, food, or crime ('Pugh has been a policeman as far back as he can remember. His father was a notorious bank robber, and the only way Pugh could get to spend time with him was to a pp reh end h im' ), he is explosively funny. In 'This Nib for Hire,' a Hollywood bigwig comes across an author's book in a little country store and describes it in a way that aptly captures this magnificent volume: 'Actually,' the producer says, 'I 'd n ever se en a bo ok rema indered in the kindling section before'." 6 Ashe, Geoffrey. FROM CAESAR TO ARTHUR.
London Collins 1960 First Edition Hard Cover Good+ Good-
320 p, 8 1/2" H. "(A) study of the life and career of the historical King Arthur in so far as it can be traced through early documents and remains. (The author) begins with the decay of Roman power and its slow disappearance from Britain, while invasion, anarchy and warring small kingdoms take its place. Then comes a reversal of fortune without parallel in the dissolving Empire, when a western Christian military chieftain stems the Saxon tide and imposes a long truce. In this unique recovery, it is suggested, lies a previously unnoticed clue to the whole development of the British monarchy. The kingdom finally created by Alfred the Great and his successors turns out to have been decisively affected by the earlier achievement of Arthur and the failure of the first Saxon attempt at conquest. Piecing together his fragments of history to form the most vivid possible whole, Mr. Ashe explains how the great tradition of Arthur flowed into the Arthurian Legend, and shows how that legend, fantastic and romantic as it is, nevertheless embodies a profound historical insight." Very light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, moderate browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, a few tiny and small edge tears, a few tiny scuffs on spine, minor edge browning, protected in a mylar sleeve.

CRATER TO THE CREGGAN: A HISTORY OF THE ROYAL ANGLIAN REGIMENT 1964-1974., Barthorp, Michael.
7 Barthorp, Michael. CRATER TO THE CREGGAN: A HISTORY OF THE ROYAL ANGLIAN REGIMENT 1964-1974.
Leo Cooper, London, 1976, first edition.
160 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), soft cover. ISBN 085052229 Color frontispiece, b&w photographs, maps, 'family tree'. "In the early 1960s a new concept for the organisation of the Infantry was devised - the voluntary formation of Large Regiments. This is the story of the first: the Royal Anglian Regiment, with four regular battalions, formed from the seven county regiments of East Anglia and the East Midlands. These regiments, each with long and highly individual histories and tradition s , m a d e a decision to unite, a step which required goodwill, tolerance, trust and determination to made the union succeed. In some quarters, the Large Regiment concept was a nail in the coffin of the treasured regimental system; to others, i t wa s a m ea ns of retaining the essential features of that system while withstanding the stresses of change in the Army as a whole. The Royal Anglians have had ten years in which to test their experiment, years of futher reductions in the Arm y, of t rai nin g a s a i rpo r table and mechanized infantry, keeping the peace in distant garrisons, as United Nations troops, and above all the years of bullet and bomb in Aden and Ulster. This book describes how the dangers and difficulties o f t hose ye ars have wel ded to geth er a new regiment of modern infantry, highly trained and professional yet still conscious of inherited traditions. Chiefly, it is a picture of the contemporary British infantryman, disciplined and brave in ac tion , pat ient and chee rful in a dve rsity , a new breed in many ways but with all the best qualities of his forefathers and, in a confused world, a figure of hope and reassurance." Very faint cigarette odor, small soft bump to top corner of p ages, light wear at t op of front hing e/sp ine, l ight rubbing, fore-edge of front cover is lightly faded, minor soiling to bottom of textblock, very light browning to edges of textblock, tiny speck on top of textblock, very faint crease and s light fading on spi ne. 9 Bayne-Powell, Rosamond. HOUSEKEEPING IN THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY. (18th CENTURY.)
London John Murray 1956 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good
208 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w illustrations. "Decorations, furniture, pictures, china, linen, the kitchen, food, drink, entertaining, washing, sanitation, heating, lighting, servants, illness, remedies, handicrafts, money, taxation and household superstitions and customs - all, so to speak, bring grist to the author's mill and the result is a graphic and convincing presentment of life in the period. The 'good old days' may have been enjoyable for those with plenty of money and good health, for the sick and poor much of life must have been horrible, the squalor behind the grandeur, the dirt underneath the cloth of gold - but how gracious and artistic the great houses were." Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light browning on spine and flap-folds, light edge wear, several small and tiny edge chips, several cup ring stains/impressions on front panel, protected in a mylar sleeve.

14 Birney, Earle. DOWN THE LONG TABLE.
Toronto McClelland and Stewart 1955 First Edition Hard Cover Good- Fair
298 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). In this novel, Gordon Saunders, a Canadian professor lecturing at an American university one day finds himself "among hostile strangers. There they sat, his accusers, looking at him down the length of the table, and of half a lifetime in a room filled with the atmostphere of suspicion and hatred - the special atmosphere of Investigating Committees in the Fifties. Their questions concerned people he had known, and things he had done, in 1932 and 1933; certain people and certain things only, for their final and all-important question - his relationship, past and present, with the Communist Party." Toronto McClelland and Stewart 1955 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Signed by Author
298 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). Signed and dated by author on title page: "Earle Birney 22 Oct 1967 Toronto". "Readers who experienced the years of the great depression, in this country or elsewhere, will find their memories painfully and perhaps fruitfully stirred; younger readers will doubtless gain new understanding of the struggles, miseries and frustrations of those heartbreaking times that preceded the excitement and activity of war. Students of politics and the social scene should find much to interest them in the story of Communist, Trotskyist and other organizations that formed and operated in Canada during the long years of poverty, unemployment and unrest. Its blend of sympathy, irony and humour, and its frank discussions of so many questions which are close to us all earn for this compelling novel a rightful place beside the major novels of this decade."
