CHILDREN OF THE BENARES: A WAR CRIME AND ITS VICTIMS., Barker, Ralph.
1 Barker, Ralph. CHILDREN OF THE BENARES: A WAR CRIME AND ITS VICTIMS.
Methuen, London, 1987, first edition.
172 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0413423107 B&w photographs. "When the passenger liner 'City of Benares' sailed from Liverpool on Friday, 13 September 1940 she was carrying 90 evacuee children from the bombed cities of Brit ain, bound under a government-sponsored scheme for a safe haven in Canada. Her sinking by U-boat four days later, without warning, in total disregard of the plight of survivors and in defiance of international law, shocked and horrified the c i v i l i s ed world. Of 406 people on board 256 were lost - including, at first count, 83 of the evacuee children. In Britain and the Commonwealth the reaction was one of righteous indignation, accompanied by an intense desire for retribution. N or w as t he propaganda value neglected, a broadcast by King George VI the day after the news broke being clearly directed at neutral America. 'The world,' he said, 'could have no clearer proof of the wickedness against which we fight than th is fou l d eed '. Su s picions subsequently arose, however, that the British authorities had quite as much to answer for as the Nazis. Parents who, despite many misgivings, had entrusted their children to the scheme when invasion threatened, began to ask que stio ns when t hey learned that the promised naval escort had abandoned the convoy twenty-one hours before the 'Benares' was sunk. Allegations that crew members rushed the boats, that emergency equipment had failed, and that the whol e vo yage had b een u nde rtake n u nder the blight of racial prejudice, demanded a formal investigation. But somehow this was avoided, and the scandal was successfully hushed up. Ralph Barker, after a vivid and poignant reconstruction of the disa ster, turn s his attent ion to wha t re ally happened behind the scenes at the Admiralty and the Ministry of Shipping. The result is a harrowing story of human fallibility and human survival." Light to moderate browning to pages and edges of text block , mino r wrin kling a t to p/botto m of spine. 5 Bata, Thomas J. With Sonja Sinclair. BATA: SHOEMAKER TO THE WORLD.
Toronto Stoddart 1990 0773724168 / 9780773724167 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
341 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "In 1932, when young Tom Bata watched his father's coffin being lowered into his grave, he silently promised to abide by the wishes expressed in his father's 'moral testament': that the Bata Shoe Company was to be treated not as a source of private wealth, but as a public trust, a means of improving the liviing standards within the community and providing customers with good value for their money. At the time, Tom had no idea of the challenges he would face in fulfilling that promise. Not only was he ill-equipped, at age eighteen, to step into the shoes of an acknowledged business genius, creator of the largest shoe manufacturing and retailing organization in the world. Worse than that, fate was about to deal him a series of painful blows. The subjugation of his homeland, Czechoslovakia, by the Nazis was followed by an acrimonious family rift, the expropriation by Communist regimes of all his holdings in Eastern and Central Europe and, in other parts of the world, economic and political upheavals that threatened the survival of the newly resuscitated Bata organization. Yet Bata actually thrived on the sudden change and adversity. From his new home base in Canada he built, this side of the Iron Curtain, a global empire that employs 70,000 people and plays an important part in the economies of many developing countries. (This) is the story of the man, his family and their business." Remainder mark (dot) on bottom of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and at top of rear flap, very light rubbing.

VANISHING SCHOOLS, THREATENED COMMUNITIES: THE CONTESTED SCHOOLHOUSE IN MARITIME CANADA, 1850-2010., Bennett, Paul W.
6 Bennett, Paul W. VANISHING SCHOOLS, THREATENED COMMUNITIES: THE CONTESTED SCHOOLHOUSE IN MARITIME CANADA, 1850-2010.
Fernwood, Halifax, 2011.
190 pp, 9" H, soft cover. ISBN 9781552664018 B&w photographs. "Traditional schoolhouses and neighbourhood schools are disappearing at an alarming rate, making way for huge schools that serve multiple communities and adhere to the logic of moderni zation, centralization, and uniformity. In (this book, the author) explores the phenomenon of school closures, focusing on the little known and contentious history of public schooling in Maritime Canada from 1850 to the present. In a lively and s t imulating narrative, (he) examines the rise of common schooling from one-room schoolhouses that encouraged local democratic control through to 'super sized' schools governed by a vast bureaucracy that silences public participation. Local 'save ou r schools' movements do arise in cities, towns, and villages throughout the Maritimes but rarely succeed in slowing the unrelenting march of 'progress'. Bennett contends that, in both urban and rural Maritime Canada, closing schools rips out a soci al anchor vital to community survival and imperils the democratic ideals that originally guided the public school system. He shows that education is increasingly dominated by a bureaucratic state where the 'bigger is better' ideology and an impers ona l, unresponsive organizational apparatus drive the entire system. The book closes with a clarion call to completely reinvent public education to better serve the needs of our children and our communities." 176 pp, 11 1/4" H. Beautifully illustrated with colour photographs showing the caribou and their environment through the seasons, colour maps. "(T)o most people's view, the country of the caribou is all barren land: harsh, unproductive, devoid of beauty. One of the purposes of these pages is to show that nothing could be further from the truth. The northern wilderness is barren only to those lacking in perception and imagination. But if we should let the great herds vanish from the barren-lands, they will indeed become what the name implies, and we will have lost a part of the majesty and mystery of life." New York ROC 1994 0451453050 / 9780451453051 Mass Market Paperback Very Good
347 pp, 6 7/8" H. "When 'Royalty' paid the tab, price wasn't the issue, survival was. And Garrett wasn't sure it was worth his life to take Maggie Jean on as his client. Not in a kingdom where the biggest con artists weren't human, magic could beat any weapon, and the local killers were built like tanks. Still, damsels in distress were Garrett's weakness, especially when they had all the right equipment in all the right places. And it seemed like a simple missing person's case: a vanished teenage daughter, a distraught mother trying to track her down. But when the mother used to be the mistress of the now defunct king, and when a guy they called the Rainmaker (a character so well connected even Garrett's friends didn't want to rat on him) was far too interested in Maggie and ready to see Garrett permanently removed from the case, he knew he'd have to call in some big favors just to keep his head on his shoulders, let alone to find a kid who probably didn't want to be found." DeLeo's single-engine plane encountered turbulence, and he and his two passengers crashed in the mountains. All three survived the accident but sustain e d m u l t i p le injuries. He found or improvised shelter at night, carefully warmed himself during the day tim e , d ran k f ro m s mal l pools of melted snow and ice, and slowly but steadily made his way toward civilization. Suffering from exhaustion and on the verge of collapse, he found a hot spring that provided him with temporary warmth and ins ects to ea t. Inju ries , d ehyd rati on, malnutrition, and a two-day blizzard slowed him, and a rockslide nearly killed him just as he glimpsed the valley and highway that he so desperately sought, but De Leo's courage saw him through....Peter DeL eo te lls his re marka ble s tory in g rippi ng detail. 640 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, tables. "(1920-1940) was a critical period when the Mennonites' survival in Canada was under a variety of external threats. It was also an age in which Mennonite history was marked by fragmentation even in their own communities. During this twenty-year timespan the battle for separate schooling led to a significant emigration of Canadian Mennonites to Latin America, while another struggle was waged with our immigration authorities to allow the entry of Russian Mennonites into Canada. The book also covers the impact of the Depression on the Mennonites and their efforts to preserve their culture and racial identity. The book ends with the response of the Mennonites to the outbreak of the Second World War." Guelph, Ontario Self-published 1976 0969069000 Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
516 pp, 9 1/4" H. Pictorial endpapers, b&w photographs. "Few people appreciate the significant contribution made by veterinarians to the economic importance of the livestock industry, the quality of small animals and the control of diseases affecting public health throughout Canada. The increasing value of such work is largely due to the efforts of the profession itself, particularly in the province of Ontario. Human survival still depends on animals and animal products. To that close relationship the veterinarian brings the benefits of modern science; his professional skill and integrity today defend the economic and physical well-being of all citizens. In a fast-flowing but detailed narrative, the authors review the early years of the O.V.A., its emphasis on high ethical and scientific standards and a long struggle for adequate statutory recognition. These advances have been closely linked to the remarkable role of the Ontario Veterinary College throughout the century. The book also traces the rise of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association to its position of national influence. In Canada, the profession is unique in that close collaboration with all levels of government is constantly required. The control and suppression of rabies is only one example - perhaps the best know to the public." Dust jacket has tiny tear/wrinkling at top of front hinge - archivally taped, minor soiling.

199 pp, 8 3/4" H. "These are the voices of the people who suffered most in the Great Depression of the 1930s - the prairie farmers, the unemployed workers, the old, the sick, and the very young. They lived in shacks, patched their clothes, and went to bed hungry. Their lives were bleak and still. Even the ordinary escape-hatches of the radio, the newspaper, and liquor were closed for many of them. Theirs was life at the bottom, a single-minded struggle for survival, monontonous and dreary. The editors have carefully culled 168 of the most interesting letters of the many thousands Prime Minister Bennett received during his term of office. The collection is unique in that it allows the poor to speak for themselves, bypassing the middle-class spokesmen - union leaders, social workers, radical politicians - who too often sketched the poor in their own image. These letters strip away the tawdry glamour and stupid nostalgia that somehow clouds the 1930s retrospect. They reveal how bad the thirties were for some people in Canada: worse perhaps than most of the history texts and even the survivors remember. In a vivid and very personal way this collection gives both those who lived throught the depression and those who know only the prosperity of the last few decades an inisght into the human casualties of economic upheaval."
