7 Creighton, Helen. Edited with an introduction by Michael Taft and Ronald Caplan. A FOLK TALE JOURNEY THROUGH THE MARITIMES.
Wreck Cove, Cape Breton Island Breton Books 1993 1895415284 / 9781895415285 Soft Cover Very Good
249 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs. "These are the folk tales from Dr. Helen Creighton's life journey through the Maritime Provinces, collecting songs and ghost stories and old cures - and folk tales. Helen serves as our guide, introducing us to storytellers, setting the scene of the telling - and then she lets the person tell it as they told it to her. The feel of the kitchen and the fish shed still cling to these stories. Some are long, really miraculous folk tales - miraculous in detail and in that they managed to survive. Others are the brief riddle or the tantalizing quick-telling that a folklorist can expect along the way. Helen kept it all. And read as a whole, the reality and intensity of those smaller pieces reveals their value in among the more finished, well-told tales. (This) is a Maritime treasure." Interior - crease at bottom corner of page leaf 89/90, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - slight bump at top of spine, minor rubbing, minor soft crease at top corner of rear cover.

B&w maps/battle plans. "Historians and students of the Burgoyne Cam paigns have, for over 125 years, referred to the Battles of Saratoga as the most decisive series of engagements of the American Revolution....Yet, with all its acknowledged importance, the campaign remains one of the least accurately portr a y e d a n d m ost poorly researched in American history....To do battle with (the) myriad of myths, inaccuracies, and misinterpretations, Colonel John R. Elting brings an impressive arsenal of professional historical skills and background knowle dg e. .. .i t i s no t s urprising that his analysis of the practical problems of campaigning and logistics in the Northern Department is masterful. Supply and transportation problems played a major role in Burgoyne's defeat. By using 'Mad Johnn y' M'A lpi ne' s 'Na rr ati ve ' - extensively yet critically and in balance with a number of other primary sources - these problems are brought into proper perspective...(Colonel Elting dissects) the role of the British artillery on Sugar Loaf Hil l ( Moun t De fian ce ) in th e ev acu atio n of Fort Ticonderoga, the effect of the death of Jane McCrea on the mustering of the American militia against Burgoyne, and the tactical importance of the terrain west of the American fortified lines nea r th e Nei lson Farm. ( He) b ring s new pri mary source material to bear upon the investigation of the Burgoyne Campaign. 'A Military Journal' - thought to be written by Richard Pope (an officer of the 47th Regiment of Foot) and the 'Memoirs' o f E. Schuel er vo n Send en ( a Brun swick offic er of the Regiment von Specht) add fresh and valuable information." From the Foreword. Previous owner's small stamp on front pastedown. Very Good+

Volume II only. Pagination runs 329 - 781 pp, large 8vo (9 5/8" H). Orange/red cloth with gilt lettering/crest on spine, top edge gilt. No. 0531 of an edition of twelve hundred and fifty. "This second volume of the Journal of the North West Company fur trader Alexander Henry the Younger portrays Henry against the larger panorama of the North American fur trade. We find him in the first entry, that for 8 August 1808, taking his leave from the Pembina post in the Red River Valley. He is destined for the Saskatchewan country and a different departmental assignment from that he previously had. We trace his route upstream along the waterways of the Saskatchewan River system, and we follow him into the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in what is now southwestern Alberta. In the course of these trading activities that cover the years 1808 through 1813, Henry meets the surveyor and discoverer David Thompson, and on occasion the latter features heavily in the narrative. During these years on the prairies and plains of western North America Henry writes extensive commentary on various native peoples. The last phase of the Journal, comprising the years 1813 and 1814, brings Henry into the watershed of the Columbia River and the Pacific Coast.. The Nor'Westers were in a very insecure position owing to the threat of United States naval intervention during the War of 1812 and to the rivalry of John Jacob Astor's Pacific Fur Company. The tension of the narrative builds with these enlarge-ments to Henry's activities, and it ends in his accidental death." From the Editor's Note. Minor rub on fore-edge of text block otherwise clean and bright.

THE PARTY DRESS., Hergesheimer, Joseph.
17 Hergesheimer, Joseph. THE PARTY DRESS.
Longmans, Green, Toronto, 1930.
343 pp, small 8vo (7 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "After forty years, Nina Henry looked in her mirror and found there a stranger in place of herself. Her first Paris dress had transformed her from a respectable young matron into an almost i ndecently beautiful woman. If that's what a dress does to you, she told herself, it is all wrong. It's immoral....Her husband thought so, too. He said it had changed her - made her look like a French cocotte. And when that night she met C h a l k e E wing, vacationing from his Cuban sugar ranch, Nina knew that she actually had changed - become a stranger to herself. She realized, with complete surprise, that she had never really been in love before. But despite the change, Nina co ul d no t fa c e the situation. Possessed by the necessities of the present, she was bound by the romantic conventions of the past. Demanding all, she would sacrifice nothing. How far she is successful, and where she fails, is a dramatic record o f t he ne ed fo r co mpromise, which more than any other quality, has formed the thoughts and acts of most women." 320 pp, 4to (12 1/8" H). First printing of the revised edition (an update of the 1982, 150th anniversary volume). Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs and reproductions. "Founded in Canton in 1832, Jardine Matheson has grown, principally from bases in the East, to become an international trading house with business interests throughout the world. (This book) assembles contributions from leading historians, such as Professor John King Fairbank and Professor K.C. Liu, and old Jardine hands, including Alan Reid and Sir John Keswick, as well as figures from the more recent history of the firm, to chronicle how this happened. They tell the story of how wealth and influence were accumulated in the early days of trading, and of the special relationship forged by 'the Princely Hong' with China and her people. They describe the opening up of Japan. They explain how the company faced the challenge of the last years of the nineteenth century by diversifying into railway construction in China and other industrial activities. After World War II the firm had to cope with the closure of China before going public in 1961. A major restructuring in the 1980s propelled the Group forward into new markets in Asia and, more recently, has allowed it to recommence full-scale operations in China. 'The Thistle and The Jade' is truly a tale of merchant adventure." Minor wear at corners and top/bottom edges of spine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

20 Lamb, W. Kaye, editor. (Daniel Williams Harmon.) SIXTEEN YEARS IN THE INDIAN COUNTRY: THE JOURNAL OF DANIEL WILLIAMS HARMON, 1800-1816.
Toronto Macmillan Company of Canada 1957 Hard Cover Good+ Good- Maps by C.C.J. Bond.
277 pp, 8 3/4" H. Map endpapers, frontispiece, maps. "The Journal of Daniel Williams Harmon is one of the great basic documents of the fur trade and of Canadian exploration. In early corrupt versions it was printed several times but of recent years has become increasingly difficult to obtain. Here for the first time is the authentic text meticulously edited by a foremost authority on Canadiana. The journal begins on April 29, 1800, when Harmon shortly after his twenty-first birthday, 'under an engagement to the North West Coy.' left Lachine for the West in one of thirty canoes, all heavily laden with supplies and bound for the Company's central rendezvous and depot at Grand Portage on Lake Superior It ends on August 18, 1819, at Fort William with the entry: 'I have at length arrived at head quarters. In coming from New Caledonia to this place, which is a distance of at least three thousand miles, nothing uncommon has occurred. A few days hence, I shall leave this place to proceed to Canada. As I have already described the country between this, and Montreal, I shall here conclude my Journal.' Between these two entries are the observations of a man with a sharp and sympathetic eye and a gift for succinct description. His journal is a lively, often exciting, always informative, record of life in the wilderness." Previous owner's name, small fore-edge stain - migrates into first few pages, very light dust soiling on top of text block, light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light bumping to corners, tiny bump to top edge of front board. Dust jacket has moderate edge wear, small edge chips, old tape at top/bottom inside edges, fading to spine color and on panels at hinges two small faint cup-rings on front panel.
