FOR HOME AND COUNTRY: THE CENTENNIAL HISTORY OF THE WOMEN'S INSTITUTES IN ONTARIO., Ambrose, Linda M.
1 Ambrose, Linda M. FOR HOME AND COUNTRY: THE CENTENNIAL HISTORY OF THE WOMEN'S INSTITUTES IN ONTARIO.
(Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario, Guelph, Ontario, 1996), Ist edition.
256 pp, oblong 8vo (8 3/4" H x 10" D), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos, maps, reproductions. "...provides a lively account of the organizational life of the Women's Institutes of Ontario. First established in 1897 in Stoney Creek, Ontario, the WI set out to improve the conditions of life for rural women through the promotion of domestic science education. That mandate soon expanded to include self-improvement, government lobbying, and community betterment. At the same time the organization spread geographically, with branches forming in virtually every rural community in Ontario, then across the country and around the world. Tracing that growth, this history concentrates on the activities of members in their own communities, and explains the enduring popularlity of the Women's Institutes...based on extensive research in provincial records, local Institute sources from across the province, and oral history interviews with dozens of members..." Light waviness to top/bottom edge of textblock. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling, tiny chip at top of spine, light rubbing. VG+/VG

University of Toronto Press, Toronto, 1975.
137 pp, small 4to (10" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, maps. "This book provides an informal history and tour of the Niagara Escarpment, the backbone of Ontario and one of Canada's natural wonders. Stretching from Tobermory at the tip of the Bruce Peninsula to Niagara Falls, the escarpment exhibits a wide diversity of landscape, people, and industry, in the present and in the past....Over 80 photographs....capture the various facets of the region. The rugged cliffs o f t h e B ruce Peninsula contrast with the pastoral lands beneath Mount Nemo; the neatly trimmed harbour at Tobermory counterpoints the Dundas swamp of Coote's Paradise. We see the interplay of industry and agriculture, from Owen Sound's grain el ev a to rs t h ro ugh Hamilton's blast furnaces to Jordan's vineyards, and recreation and culture, from tourist landmarks through Hockley Hills skiing to the musuems of history and art. The text provides entertaining glimpses of some of the pe o ple an d som e o f t he ev ents in the history of settlement and growth, proceeding from town to town, north to south. This readable book is the first to deal with the landscape and history of the entire Niagara Escarpment. It is a useful guid e to o ne o f the most int ere stin g and historic areas of Canada." Among his many accomplishments, Tyrrell discovered Canada's first dinosaur, Albertosaurus, and an Ice Age glacier he named Keewatin. He risked his own and his companions' lives charting the Dubawnt and Kazan river networks west of Hudson Bay, and rescued the maps and records of Canada's great geographer, David Thompson, from oblivion.
