Boston Bulfinch Press / Little, Brown 1992 0821217771 / 9780821217771 First Edition. Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Cornell Capa.
216 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H). Profusely illustrated in b&w. "Cornell Capa, world famous for his photo-journalism as well as for his founding of New York's International Center of Photography, has had a long an d productive working life. His career has spanned several key decades of the twentieth century, and his work has taken him around the globe to cover political events and chronic social problems, to photograph the famous and the unsung. As a self-described concerned photographer, Cornell Capa has always been led by his instincts to photograph people - all kinds of people - with a humanitarian commitment. This book reflects that commitment in unforgettable pictures of missionaries in Central and South America; religious and tribal rituals; the presidental campaigns of Adlai Steven-son and John F. Kennedy; political upheavals, refugees, and wars; the historic and the marginal. Here, too, are moments of whimsy and joy, from Harlem to London to Peru, and memorable images of celebrities including Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable, Alec Guiness, Grandma Moses, Billy Graham, and Boris Pasternak. Despite the wide recognition of Cornell Capa's achievements, and the fact that he has spent his lifetime furthering the art of photography, this book is the first retrospective collection of his work to be published in the United States. All these photographs transmit crucial aspects of the political, social, cultural, and religious history of our times." Very minor cocking to book. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

7 Carroll, Steven B. & Salt, Steven D. ECOLOGY FOR GARDENERS.
Portland Timber Press 2005 0881926116 / 9780881926118 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Errol D. Hooper Jr.
328 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Colour photographs, b&w drawings. "(T)he authors look at the structure, development, genetics, and reproduction of plants, the most prominent actors in garden ecosystems. They describe other garden organisms, focusing on those with the most influential roles - insects, nematodes, and microorganisms - as well as garden denizens ranging from microscopic prions to elephants. (They) explore nutrient cycles, sunlight, air, water, and the soil - the physical environment within which garden organisms live and function - and they consider the ways plants function in their environment and form communities. They then examine the intricate interactions among garden-dwelling organisms, ranging from the harmful to the beneficial. Once this groundwork is laid, they introduce humans into the garden ecosystem and consider how gardeners can use ecological principles to wisely manage their garden ecosystems. Throughout the book, the authors cite hundreds of examples drawn from personal experience and from the gardening and ecological literature. It becomes clear that gardens - whether a group of potted plants on a patio, a few beds carved out of a lawn, or extensive plantings over several acres - are indeed connected to the natural world in endless and important ways." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, a few tiny dents on spine and hinges.

Schiffer, West Chester, PA, 1991.
228 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0887403484 B&w photographs, maps. "Covers the last chapter, the decline and fall of the air defense of Germany at the end of World War II. It is a diary of losses and a chronicle in w hich the fighter pilots plays the lead. It tells of the young men who joined their squadrons full of optimisim and derring-do, only to give their lives to no purpose in a last desperate endeavour. The focal point of (this book) is the contro v e r s i a l Operation 'Bodenplatte' on the morning of New Year's Day 1945, an operation in which the German fighter force received its final mortal wound - losing some 230 aircrew in less than four hours, the fighter units suffered their most seve re d ef ea t. Only now, after years of evaluation of all available sources, can the true figures of fighter losses on January 1, 1945 be reported. But this picture of the sacrifice of fighter formations does not mean that fighter pilots were unab le to sco re suc c esses. The figures for enemy aircraft shot down and the contact reports show clearly that the German pilots could still both parry and deal out hard punches. Few people have any real idea of the actual scale of the German fighte r f orc e's sac rifi ce . The imagination boggles at the tragic events that took place in the skies over Europe as the war neared its end, and even in the perspective of history the full extent of the debacle can scarcely be depicted. (Here, the a utho r) e xpla ins these la st six months of the Luftwaffe and the fall of a once mighty air force." Dust jacket has very light wrinkle at top of spine and front flap-fold. London Brockhampton 1998 1860198635 / 9781860198632 Hard Cover Fine Near Fine Steven Brown.
159 pp, 10" H. B&w and colour illustrations - photographs, reproductions, maps. "Two great narrative themes, which link the sacred and the secular, have been passed down to us from the Dark Ages. These are the stories of the heroic, godlike Arthur and of a mystic object of quest, the Holy Grail. John Matthews has created an easily understood survey of the origins and merging of these epic themes and stories It is a richly woven tapestry of myth and legend, and of love and desire - both sacred and profane. It covers city and temple, knights and monks, and ranges far and wide, from Camelot to Carbonek. In gathering together the strands that make up the stories, the author has examined many of the hundred or so extant texts. He has selected from these - some still untranslated and obscure - to show how the two great themes changed and developed down the centuries as they became inextricably joined. (This book) provides a fascinating survey as well as including five of the traditional stories, retold by the author. In addition, there is a full summary of all sources and an extensive bibliography."

291 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "The 369th Infantry Regiment was the first African American regiment mustered to fight in World War I. In a war where the vast majority of black soldiers served in the Service of Supply, unloading ships and building roads and railroads, the men of the 369th trained and fought side by side with the French at the front (America's segregation policy prohibited them from serving together with white American soldiers) and ultimately spent more days in the trenches than any other American unit. They went to war in defense of a country afflicted by segregation, Jim Crow laws, lynchings, and racial violence, but a country they believed in all the same. Despite extraordinary odds, the 369th became one of the most successful - and feared - regiments of the war. The Harlem Hellfighters, as their enemies named them, showed extraordinary valor on the battlefield, with many soldiers winning the Croix de Guerre and the Legion of Honor, and were the first Allied unit to reach the Rhine River. A riveting depiction of both social triumph and battlefield heroism." Tiny bump at top of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing.

18 Passelecq, Georges and Suchecky, Bernard. Translated by Steven Rendall. Introduction by Garry Wills. THE HIDDEN ENCYCLICAL OF PIUS XI.
Harcourt Brace, New York, 1997, first American edition.
319 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 01510024444 "In June 1938, after his attempts at diplomacy with Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy had failed, Pope Pius XI ordered an American Jesuit, Father John LaFarge, to compose an en cyclical denouncing racism and anti-Semitism. The result was a draft called 'Humani Generis Unitas' (The Unity of the Human Race), which LaFarge produced with the help of two other priests. But after Pope Pius XI died early in 1939, his succ e s s o r , Pius XII, stood by in silence as Nazi Germany began to carry out its Final Solution. The unpublished encyclical was buried in a secret archive, its three authors bound by a vow of silence. For decades Vatican scholars either minimized t he i mp or ta nce of 'Humani Generis Unitas' or questioned the document's very existence - until Thomas Breslin, a Jesuit seminarian, uncovered the manuscript in the late sixties. In a disturbing tale of archival intrigue and historical investi gat ion , ( the au tho rs) describe their quest to recover the draft of the encyclical. Undaunted by interminable delays - evasions that only deepened suspicions of Church complicity thirty years after Vatican II - (they) steadfastly pursued their inq uiri es. Her e, p ubli shed for the first time in English, is the document the Vatican kept hidden for half a century. By examining the circumstances of its creation and the consequences of its suppression, (this book) casts new light on the relat ions betw een t he Va tican , state-sponsored anti-Semitism, and the Jews during World War II."
