THE TORONTO GENERAL HOSPITAL, 1819-1965: A CHRONICLE., Cosbie, W.G.

Toronto Macmillan of Canada 1975 0770511848 / 9780770511845 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
373 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "The story of the Toronto General Hospital is intimagely and inseparably associated with the development of the city of Toronto and the support of its citizens. Dr. Crosbie traces the history of the Hospital from its founding in York, through its humble facilities on King Street, to the ornate Victorian structure on Gerrard, and finally to the great institution which today dominates the corner of College Street and University Avenue. Its early services to the victims of the War of 1812 and of the cholera epidemics of the nineteenth century, the problems of financing, the challenges of two world wars, and its relationship with the University and its medical schools are just a few of the factors governing the direction taken by the institution. Throughout this chronicle, the achievements of a distinguished body of medical staff in the fields of medical practice, research, and teaching are described in a context of contribution to the University and the city of Toronto, a well as to the international medical scene." Very small soft crease at top corner of last 50 pages, bottom corner of boards are bumped, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has moderate edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light rubbing, old tape on inside top/bottom edges.

THE FRAGRANCE OF SWEET-GRASS: L.M. MONTGOMERY'S HEROINES AND THE PURSUIT OF ROMANCE., Epperly, Elizabeth Rollins. (Lucy Maud Montgomery. L.M.)
4 Epperly, Elizabeth Rollins. (Lucy Maud Montgomery. L.M.) THE FRAGRANCE OF SWEET-GRASS: L.M. MONTGOMERY'S HEROINES AND THE PURSUIT OF ROMANCE.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1993 0802074618 / 9780802074614 First Paperback Edition. Soft Cover Very Good+
275 pp, 8vo (9" H). "Anne Shirley is the best known of a memorable group of heroines created by Lucy Maud Montgomery, a group that includes Emily Byrd Starr, Valancy Stirling, and Pat Gardiner. These characters are at the centre of Epperly's book, the first full-length critical study of all L.M. Montgomery's fiction. Epperly contends that Montgomery was a master of the romance genre, and through her use of literary allusions, repetitions, irony, and comic inversions she deftly manipulated the normal conventions of romance novels. By studying the fictional biographies of the heroines and their pursuit of romance, Epperly question the ways romance shapes what we consider valuable in our imaginings and experience. A book written for L.M. Montgomery fans and scholars." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very minor edge wear, clean and bright.

6 Gagnon, Georgette and Rath, Dan. NOT WITHOUT CAUSE: DAVID PETERSON'S FALL FROM GRACE.
Toronto HarperCollins 1991 0002158426 / 9780002158428 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
408 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "The stunning defeat of David Peterson's powerful Liberal government on September 6, 1990 broke many of the old rules for Canadian elections - and provided the first glimpse of how future elections will be fought. At the center of the story: Liberal leader David Peterson. Young, handsome and rich, he embodied the glory years of the 1980s when Yuppies, BMWs and image politics ruled. His decision to 'go early', to call an election only three years into his mandate, set the wheels in motion. His campaign attracts some of Canada's leading political players: campaign chair Kathy Robinson, whose pivotal position becomes a hotseat as the Liberal slide begins; former Trudeau pollster Martin Goldfarb, anxious to keep a Liberal government in power; David MacNaughton, Goldfarb critic and rival; Bob Nixon, the tough and respected treasurer faced with scuttling his balanced budget in a last-ditch vote-buying attempt; aide Vince Borg, Peterson's long-time friend, who tries to protect the premier from protesters and Liberals alike. These key players and an army of policy experts, strategists, party members, candidates and reporters tangle and clash in the race for power. (The) gripping account of how the Peterson Liberals did not anticipate or prepare for the new trends emerging in Canada's electoral process: the increasing power of special-interest groups, campaign strategies that attack incumbents without offering alternatives, negative advertising, the critical importance of perceptions and the media, an electorate with declining party allegiances and the rise of non-traditional parties. It's also the reavealing tale of how Ontario's New Democratic and Progressive Conservative parties ran campaigns that became a perfect match for the volatile mood of voters." Remainder mark on bottom of text block at spine. Dust jacket has very minor wrinkling at top of spine.

15 Montgomery, L.M. (Lucy Maud.) EMILY OF NEW MOON.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart Reprint Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Stanley Turner dust jacket art.
351 pp, 8vo (8 1/8" H) - brown boards with silver lettering/banding on spine, silver letter "C" in box on front board (for Cavendish Library). Copyright date is 1925, but this is a later printing. The first book in the 'Emily' trilogy. "Emily Starr left 'Maywood' and 'the house in the hollow' when her father died, and went to live with Aunt Elizabeth Murray at 'New Moon', Blair Water. 'New Moon' was named after the proud sailing vessel on which the Murrays had come to P.E.I. - as long ago as 1790. That was almost as good as living on a ship, and Emily liked the thought of that. Some of Aunt Elizabeth's iron-bound ideas on bringing up little girls Emily liked considerably less. But there were compensations - Aunt Laura, who was a great deal like Mother; Mr. Carpenter, who encouraged her to write the stories which she used to tell to Father; Cousin Jimmy, who bought her the 'Jimmy book' in which to write them. That made you well on the way to being an author, like Father had been. This story of the awakening and development of a sensitive and highly creative talent is told with charm, insight and sympathy." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, slight browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling, very light soiling on rear panel, tiny edge tear.

It is the story, also, of the love of Emily and Teddy Kent which progressed through countless vicissitudes, stranger even than Emily's own fiction, to a happy ending at Blair Water. An unusual story, sensitively told. The diary form adds a certain directness." EMILY'S QUEST, Montgomery, L.M. (Lucy Maud.)
18 Montgomery, L.M. (Lucy Maud.) EMILY'S QUEST
London Harrap 1979 0245534121 / 9780245534126 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
204pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). The third book in the "Emily" series. " 'Emily of New Moon' has now left the world of the High School, so vividly encountered in 'Emily Climbs', and the real battles of life begin in earnest for the orphan determined to overcome her early handicaps. In a dramatic and unexpected way she achieves success as a writer just as L.M. Montgomery did with 'Anne of Green Gables', after refusing an offer to go to New York and work in journalism. But she finds the problems of love and marriage far more difficult, and the author keeps the reader in genuine suspense until the last few pages. In the opinion of many critics the Emily books are superior to the 'Anne of Green Gables' series, for the author puts far more of herself and her real experiences into them. Whereas the Anne books are clearly written to entertain, the Emily books are written more from the heart, and thus carry greater conviction." Small bump at top of spine, slight bump at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, one small edge tear archivally taped, minor rubbing.

Victoria, B.C. Sono Nis Press 1988 1550390007 / 9781550390001 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good Maurice Chadwick.
260 pp, 9 1/4" H. Map endpapers. Sepiatone photographs, colour ship portraits. "This gripping history of Canada's unknown seal hunt is a saga of greed and subterfuge, of bumbling diplomatic intrigue that almost led to war. At the same time it is the story of brave men who battled stormy seas in aging ships, many of which had seen better days. Countless lives were lost. Many of the victims were native Indians recruited with their canoes and spears from villages along the west coast of Vancouver Island. The effect of these tragedies on the Indian population and the economic impact of the fur seal hunt on their way of life is examined here for the first time. Threaded throughout the book are stories of the colourful characters who skippered and manned the sealing schooners. After years of acrimonious negotiations, a four-nation treaty was finally signed in 1911 which saved the fur seals from extinction. It was a landmark agreement in the conservation of marine life which set the pattern for a number of other international treaties over the years." Dust jacket has small wrinkle at top edge of rear flap, very light rubbing/soiling on rear panel.

THE RULERS OF RHODESIA: FROM EARLIEST TIMES TO THE REFERENDUM., Ransford, Oliver.
20 Ransford, Oliver. THE RULERS OF RHODESIA: FROM EARLIEST TIMES TO THE REFERENDUM.
John Murray, London, 1968, first edition.
345 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates, double page map. "(T)races the history of Rhodesia from earliest times up to the referendum of 1922 when the Rhodesian electorate decided to seek independence under the Crown, rather than accept the South African Government's generous terms of union. (Ransford) begins with a study of the early bushmen and their art. He then moves from this 'golden age' to the growth of the Monomatapan empire - which is best remembered for i t s great Zimbabwe-type stone buildings - and to its subjection by the Portuguese in the sixteenth century. Here he introduces his main theme: that throughout its history Rhodesia has been governed by minority elites. The Portuguese were succeede d by the enigmatic Rozwi theocrats, and they in turn by the conquering Matabele who fled from Shaka's wrath in Zululand. It was during the Matabele ascendency that British missionaries first established themselves in the country, and the extraordi na ry story is told for the first time of the way in which internal dissension came close to wrecking their mission. The second part of the book describes Cecil Rhodes' occupation of the country and the events leading up to the referendum." Previo us own er's place, date and signature on free front endpaper, minor tiny foxing marks on top and fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has very light edge wear, light edge browning, some delamination on front hinge. Very Goo d/V ery Good-
