4 Campbell, Robert E. Foreword by T.U. "Tommy" Primrose. I WOULD DO IT AGAIN: REMINISCENCES OF THE ROCKIES.
Toronto Ryerson Press 1959 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good- Good-
204 pp, 8 5/8" H. B&w photographs. "Urged many times to write the story of his life, Mr. Robert Campbell, now in his eighty-eighth year, finally acceded to the request. The result is this very readable book of reminiscence, rich in humour and history, adventure and anecdote, told by a master storyteller. In a breezy and colloquial style the author tells of his experiences in and around Banff, of his political life, experiences in the army during World War I, and his encounters with important visitors in the Canadian Rockies. This is not only a fascinating story, but a valuable record of early days when the Rockies were just beginning to attract attention as a tourist centre for the world." A few scattered very small light stains on page 49, light edge wear, small bump at three corners, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, creases at top of rear panel, several edge tears archivally taped, light rubbing/soiling.

5 Cremony, John C. LIFE AMONG THE APACHES.
New York Indian Head Books 1991 0880296526 / 9780880296526 Facsimile Reprint. Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
322 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Facsimile reprint of 1868 edition. From the Introduction: "We have never striven to make ourselves intelligently acquainted with (the various tribes occupying the vast region which extends from the Colorado river on the west, to the settlements of Texas on the east, and from Taos in New Mexico to Durango in the Mexican Republic). Nearly all that relates to them is quite as uncertain and indefinite to our comprehension as that which obtains in the center of Africa. Those who were best informed on the matter, and had given it the closest attention, were, at the time - most unfortunately - the least capable of imparting their information; while those who were ignorant of the subject have been the most forward to give the results of their fragmentary gleanings. If this volume shall have the effect of bettering our present deplorable Indian policy, by letting in some light, it will accomplish the author's object." The author was "Interpreter to the U.S. Boundary Commission, under the Hon. John R. Bartlett, in 1849, '50 and '51, and late Major of California Volunteer Cavalry, operating in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Western Arkansas." Dust jacket has a few areas of very minor edge wrinkling.

180 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions, maps. Signed by the author on the page preceding the title page. "There is an island in British Columbia's sheltered Gulf of Georgia that is uniquely blessed of Nature and the home of generations of people of widely varied origins. There they have lived with more than the usual degree of satisfactions. Some were English and American, some American negroes coming before the slaves were emancipated, some were sailors who jumped ship, not a few were Kanakas from Hawaii. Canadians and Americans of modern times are discovering the joys of island life - but the descendants of the first settlers remain the solid core of today's population. There are salt springs that give the island its unusual name - but chief amongst the natural assets of the place is its tradition of self-sufficiency and its continuing charm of country living and neighbourliness. Bea Hamilton, who was born there of a pioneering family and has never been long away from Salt Spring, is the island's journalist, author and historian. Others today may see modern Salt Spring through different eyes. this is 'her' island, the people 'her' people and she introduces them with lively interest and much respect for what they are - Salt Spring Islanders." ISBN 0804810095 Color plates, b&w engravings, maps (some fold-out) - collated. "As late as 1857, the vast territory of the Canadian northwest was unknown to all but a handful of fur traders. Yet the determination of the Hudson's Bay Company to maintain its enormous fur preserve was being challenged by the persistant advance of settlement. Anticipatin g t h e t e r m ination of the Company's license in 1859 and curious about the suitability of the territory for general settlement, both the Imperial and the Canadian governments commissioned expeditions in 1857 to explore and report on the area. A n I ri sh - bo rn a rm y officer, Captain John Palliser, headed the British expedition; the moving spirit of the Canadian party was Henry Youle Hind. Hind's energy and zeal for the project lead his expedition on a thorough exploration of the R ed Ri ver an d l at er, of th e A ssiniboine and Saskatchewan Rivers as well. First hand observation of the success of even limited farming in these areas convinced Hind that the prairies were capable of absorbing many thousands of settlers and of pro vidi ng t hem wit h a good liv ing. He wrote enthusiastically of the potentialities of western agriculture, envisaging a transportation system, either wagon road or railroad, from Lake of the Woods to the Rockies that would enjoy the advan tag e of bein g fed by an a gric ultur al po pulat ion from one extremity to the other. Substantail parts of this work made their first appearance as parliamentary papers in 1857. Hind's optimistic reports outweighed the less enthusiastic findin gs o f Pal liser and ul tima tely influ enced the Im perial government to refuse the renewal of the Hudson's Bay Company's license two years later. Hind's 'Narrative', factual and objective, yet enlivened by incidents of personal experience, is fo remos t a do cument of ext raord inary visio n and foresig ht and remains today a minor classic." "This book demonstrates how two strains of influence - the resurgence of Classicsim and the impact of 'pri mitivism' on Western culture - provide links between Symbolism, Post-Impressionism, Fauvism and the birth of Modernism. Certain polarities generated by these two different strains - tradition versus innovation, Western versus non-Western c u l t u r e , t he timelessness of myth versus the experience of modern life - were driven by ideas that developed formalist parallels. This can be seen in the struggle between the figurative and abstract in art, and in the contrast between the pa st or al i dy ll a n d the contemporary landscape...." 136 pp, small 4to (10 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w and colour photographs, floor plans. "The reputation of Richard Neutra (1892-1970) is founded on his finely executed and superbly landscaped domestic buildings. Born and educated in Vi enna, where he was influenced by the leading European architects, notably Adolph Loos, Neutra developed the intense dislike of ornament that was to characterize his work. He emigrated to the United States in 1923 and in 1926 established a pract i c e in California where the majority of his buildings are to be found. His highly individual style is characterized by the adoption of plate glass for exterior walls, combined with overhanging eaves, outrigged columns and integrated pools, and b y th e e xploitation of the subtropical California vegetation to create privacy."
