BRIDGES OF BATTLE: FAMOUS BATTLEFIELD ACTIONS AT BRIDGES AND RIVER CROSSINGS., Featherstone, Donald.
2 Featherstone, Donald. BRIDGES OF BATTLE: FAMOUS BATTLEFIELD ACTIONS AT BRIDGES AND RIVER CROSSINGS.
London Arms and Armour 1998 1854094491 / 9781854094490 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
256 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w plates. "From more than 2,000 years of military history, (the author) has selected some one hundred examples of battles centred on river crossings. They range in size fom small-scale actions such as the battle for Powick Bridge in the early months of the English Civil War to massive, army-scale operations including the final crossing of the Rhine at Remagen during the Second World War. One of the biggest battles during the Napoleonic Wars - indeed, the biggest battle to that date with more than 300,000 men in combat - was fought across the Danube in 1809, culminating in the battle of Wagram. Later, as Napoleon's fortunes began to ebb, there took place the desperate and tragic crossing of the Berezina in 1812 when Napoleon's depleted army, retreating from Moscow, fought to cross the freezing river to escape the pursuing and encirling Russians and the hell of a Russian winter. The American Civil War also provides many examples of battles for river crossings, such as First Bull Run, the opening engagement of the war, the fight for Burnside's Bridge at Antietam and the Battle of the Big Black River during the riverine campaign for Vicksburg. Other, often lesser-known, actions are also to be found in this book, including tales of desperate courage from the Indian Mutiny and other British colonial wars. The range of contributions, including expert analyses and eyewitness accounts often enables the reader to see both sides of the story - those of the defender and the attacker - and to compare battles fought in similar circumstances, but with very different weapons, across the centuries." A few faint scuffs on the front board. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, one small edge tear archivally taped.

Charles C. Thomas, Springfield, Illinois, 1969.
459 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "Since the discovery by Aserinsky and Kleitman of an objective indicator of dreaming sleep, there have been a plethora of studies investigating the physiological parameters of the dreaming a nd non-dreaming sleep states. However, there has been an unfortunate neglect of the psychological concomitants of these states in most of this work. A comprehensive symposium which would bring together workers interested in the psychology o f d r e a m ing with those who worked with the REM technique for the collection of sleep mentation seemed desirable if the understanding of the psychology of dreaming was to keep pace and be integrated with the ever-increasing physiological know l ed ge . Th is v ol ume reports on a conference which focused both on the classical views of the nature of the dream as seen in the light of the findings coming from the REM studies and on the current attempts at exploring the content of REM coll ec ted dr ea m s. Th e i nte raction between the participants, those who articulated theoretical statements about the psychology of the dream, and those who examined dream content in various experimental ways, lead to further reintegrative efforts on bot h si des ." 302 pp, 9 1/4" H. Pictorial endpapers, b&w illustrations. Through them, he revisits thrilling turning points in American history, including the single sniper shot that turned the tide of the Revolutionary War, the firearms designs that proved decisive at Gettsyburg, the 'gun that won the West', and the weapons that gave U.S. soldiers an edge in the world wars and beyond. This is also the story of how firearms innovation, creativity, and industrial genius has constantly pushed American history - and power - forward." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. DIRECTORY OF THE COUNTY OF PEEL FOR 1873-4., Lynch, John.
9 Lynch, John. DIRECTORY OF THE COUNTY OF PEEL FOR 1873-4.
Mississauga, Ontario Halton-Peel Branch O.G.S. 1998 077799871 Facsimile Edition. Soft cover in spiral Binding Near Fine
141 pp, 9" H. B&w advertisements. Facsimile reprint of the 1874 edition published at the Brampton Progress and Chromatic Printing House. "This book is a compilation of Mr. John Lynch, Brampton, and contains the names of all persons on the assessment rolls for 1873, in the townships and villages in the County. It contains, besides, some exceedingly interesting historical notes of the early settlement of the district of which the present County of Peel was a portion. We read that Yonge street was surveyed in 1796, by Augustus Jones, and a number of extracts from his field-book discover that at that time the population was sparse in that beautiful route. Indeed it seems that in 1799 there were, in the Home District, only two hundred and twenty-four inhabitants. There are also a number of interesting exemplifications from the 'Court Book' of the County of York. We find parties fined for assault and battery during 1799 in amounts varying from 20 (Pounds) to 5 shillings. - On the 30th of December, 1815, Allan McNabb, Jr. had to apologize to the Bench for riding his horse on the foot path, and being pert and insolent to Wm. Chewitt. - The early settlement of the townships in the county is also briefly described." From 'The Globe' of the 6th of April, 1874. There is some blurring to portions of the text, mainly in the early pages but, except in a few cases, it remains legible. Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor corner wear.

144 pp, square (10 3/8" x 10 3/8"). Colour photographs. "(A) celebration of Ontario's heritage. Its many pictures provide a panoramic view of the province's architecture from the late 18th century to the Victorian era. Its text combines architectural description with the story of some of the people who built and used these buildings, including (no doubt) some local folkore along the way. In other words, it is not a book for scholars; but rather, a book intended for all people who love old buildings and a book which may help to inspire interest among those who may never have stopped to look at an old building before." Book is Fine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

EDWARD BURRA: TWENTIETH-CENTURY EYE, Stevenson, Jane
13 Stevenson, Jane EDWARD BURRA: TWENTIETH-CENTURY EYE
London Jonathan Cape 2007 0224078755 / 9780224078757 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
496 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w plates. "The first full-scale biography of one of Britain's most important twentieth-century painters. Edward Burra never followed fashion: in the thirties, when modern art was dominated by abstraction and landscape, he painted people; in the sixites, when landscape was completely out of fashion, he started to find it interesting. His life was an unusual one: profoundly disabled, he lived with his parents, and was in constant pain. Only when he was painting could he forget his body. At the same time he was a man with a rich and full life. He was a letter-writer of genius, writing every afternoon to a wide circle of friends. His letters are camp, witty, full of the energy and delight in life which he could not express physically. Inventive, entertaining, and extraordinarily original, his writing expresses a man who combined profound personal loyalty with distaste for any kind of emotional grandstanding." Very small bump to top corner of both boards, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, small shallow bump on rear board. Dust jacket has wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor edge wear, small shallow bump on rear panel.

16 Weeks, Verna Mae. ERINDALE: THE PRETTY LITTLE VILLAGE.
Mississauga, Ontario Verna Mae Weeks 1999 096913018X / 9780969130185 First Edition Soft Cover Fine
245 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions, map. "Springfield (Erindale) was described in the 1877 Atlas of Peel as 'the pretty little village'. A century ago, the Toronto Mail and Empire stated that few people in Canada were aware of the lovely views, the pretty homes, and fruitful orchards on the banks of the Credit in the vicinity of Springfield; that there was no other more charming spot to be found in this country, or indeed in any country. It had a Town Hall with a bell on it which was rung at ten o'clock of an evening; and its people lived for many years in peace with the native people of the Indian Village downriver. For fifty years a beautiful lake, formed by the building of a great and powerful dam which transmitted electricity not only to the village but to West Toronto, formed a picturesque setting for Erindale's Village Green. Erindale had Miles Park where all sorts of jungle animals, gentle donkeys and iridescent peacocks roamed in their own enclosures, and a small black bear ran freely around the grounds accepting ice cream treats from children. Today, the most unchaged part of the City of Mississauga is the place where the road comes down Maple Hill to the corner of Dundas Street and Mississauga Road; here, the red schoolhouse, the church, Ross's Hill, the grey shale banks of the river, and the spring below Dundas - each of them can still be seen." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - clean and bright.
