3 Beetles, Chris. With contributions from Rodney Dale and David Wootton. LOUIS WAIN'S CATS.
Cambridge Worth Press 2011 1849310262 / 9781849310260 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ Louis Wain.
256 pp, square small 10to (10 1/4" H x 10 1/4" D). Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w reproductions of Wain's art. "During their heyday, in the time before the First World War, Louis Wain's cats, dressed as humans, portrayed (the) stylish Edwardian world having fun; at restaurants and tea parties, going to the Races and the Seaside, celebrating Christmas and Birthdays, and disporting themselves with exuberant games of tennis, bowls, cricket and football. This is a titillating world of cats at play, uninhibited and slightly dangerous, with most group activities likely to turn into mishap, mayhem and catastrophe. This is Wain's world, funny, edgy and animated; a whole cat world. The first comprehensive exhibition of Wain's work was held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 1972 and, since then, Louis Wain has steadily become more fashionable and collected worldwide. This new biography will show many images for the first time ever, amongst 300 plates of richness and variety, all of which are reproduced faithfully from the original artwork." Dust jacket has tiny wrinkles at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, a few slight wrinkles on front flap

11 Ferguson, John. With Stan & Shirley Fischler. THUNDER AND LIGHTNING.
Scarborough, Ontario Prentice-Hall 1989 0139206469 / 9780139206467 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
334 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "If the Montreal Canadiens had a weakness in the early 1960s it was size. Too often, small Canadiens were being battered against the boards and checked out of action. In 1963, that problem was solved, and a big part of the solutions was John Ferguson. Chosen out of the American Hockey Leauge by Frank Selke, Ferguson showed up in training camp with a reputation as a good hockey player, and one who hadn't lost a fight in the AHL. He lived up to his reputation during his first game in Boston. At the opening faceoff, he got into a fight with Ted Green, which he won. Not only that, Ferguson proceeded to score twice in that game, which ended in a 4-4 tie. John Ferguson played for the Canadiens for eight years, until he retired in 1971. During those years, he shared in five Stanley Cups, played five hundred games, scored 145 goals and 158 assists, and spent 1214 minutes in the penalty box. An extremely aggressive forward, he acted as the club's policeman and extended his dislike of opposing players off the ice. Ferguson retired from the Canadiens in 1971 to begin a new career as a businessman. He came back to hockey as Coach and General Manager of the New York Rangers in 1976, then as General Manager of the Winnipeg Jets, and finally as General Manager of Team Canada. Having retired once more from hockey, (he) will dedicate himself to his second great sporting love, as President of The Windsor Raceway." Minor wrinkling to top/bottom of text block, tiny dent to top edge of front board. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing, minor edge browning light crease down front flap.

191 pp, 4to (11 1/4" h), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with b&w and color photos. "Airplane nose art evolved out of necessity for identifying 'friendlies' from enemy aircraft, which quickly became a powerful means of self-expression for military pilots and their crews. From national insignia, squadron markings and number/letter combinations nose art evolved into more personalized artwork, and individual pilots began sporting colourful, even outrageous schemes. Squadrons often used a special crest or colour scheme to identify aircraft in the squadron. This was an aid to groundcrews as well and helped them prepare to service their incoming aircraft during battle..." BLACK AJAX., Fraser, George MacDonald.
14 Fraser, George MacDonald. BLACK AJAX.
New York Carroll & Graf 1998 0786705531 / 9780786705535 Second Printing Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Signed by Author
249 pp, 9 1/4 " H. Bookplate, signed by author, affixed to half title page. "When Captain Buckley 'Mad Buck' Flashman, father of the notorious Harry, sees a black American boxer catch a fly in mid-flight, he realizes he has discovered the prize ring's best, and potentially most lucrative fighter ever. What follows in George MacDonald Fraser's colorful re-creation of Regency England is the powerful, rollicking, and moving tale of Tom Molineaux, a freed slave from New Orleans who challenged Britain's celebrated Tom Cribb. The 'Black Ajax' became no less famous a figure in England than Napoleon - and just as much a threat to the establishment - as he boxed his way into legend and created the precedent for modern black prizefighters. Bringing historical fact spiritedly to life, 'Black Ajax' shows Fraser is without question, in the words of Kingsley Amis, 'a first-rate historical novelist'." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing, irregular 3" very light scratch on rear panel.

Toronto Stoddart 1998 0773731288 / 9780773731288 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
128 pp, 7 3/4" H. B&w and colour photographs. "He has been called the 'greatest goal scorer in professional hockey history,' not least for his astonishing feat of notching 50 goals in 50 games. Yet that alone hardly explains his legend. Maurice Richard not only ushered in hockey's modern era with his prolific scoring touch and fiery play, he also came to symbolize the hopes and fears of an entire culture. Quebec in the 1940s and '50s wanted a hero and they found one in Richard - a fierce competitor, a skilful artist and a proud warrior, whose famous temper triggered one of the darkest events in Canadian sporting history - the Montreal riot of 1955. This look back at the greatest player to ever don the red, white and blue includes some of the finest sportswriters of the era, documenting Richard the hero and Richard the villain, Richard the doting family man and Richard the aging hockey legend. Passionate about everything in life, Richard raised the stakes for all of us who understand that hockey has always been more than just a game." Toronto Van Nostrand Reinhold 1981 0442296355 / 9780442296353 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
208 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs, reproductions. "(T)akes a fascinating look at the personalities and events that have made the Gardens Canada's most famous building. It is the interesting story of the building of the Gardens and of the hockey greats who have played there. It is also, in many ways, the story of popular entertainment in Canada from 1931 to 1981. Over 100 million people have been entertained by ballet, opera, circuses, skating extravaganzas and concerts of all sorts, in addition to almost every kind of sporting event from boxing and wrestling to bicycle racing. The arena has also been the site of political and religious rallies, benefits in support of the war effort, community events such as Brownie and Boy Scout pageants, and service club fund-raisers. This nostalgic book will remind sports fans of the Leafs' high-scoring Kid Line, of George Chuvalo going the distance with Muhammad Ali or of Vitas Gerulaitas defeating Bjorn Borg. Rock fans will remember attending an Elvis Presley concert, or waiting hours in line for Beatles' tickets. (It) also contains a detailed chronology of the milestones in the history of the Gardens for the trivia buff." Minor edge wear, minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wear, one very small edge tear archivally taped.

Woodbridge, Suffolk Antique Collectors' Club 1999 1851492585 / 9781851492589 Reprint Hard Cover Fine Very Good
168 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). Colour photographs. "In the 18th century, artists and potters were not slow to reflect in models the interest of the time in identifying and selectively breeding individual types of dog, and continental and home-based factories started to produce realistic examples of both sporting and pampered dogs. Following Landseer's painting of 1836 of Queen Victoria's favourite dog, the King Charles Spaniel Dash, the potters of Staffordshire were not slow to seize the opportunity to turn Dash into a national icon. Pairs of spaniels were portrayed in clay in enormous quantities, followed soon after by many other breeds. The modellers are usually anonymous, but the simple hand-painted decoration, often done by children, gives each piece an individuality and vitality, and as (this) charming book shows, these dogs have an enduring quality that makes them as endearing today as they were when first made." Very light rubbing, very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and top edge of rear panel, two tiny dints on front hinge.
