THE MOST DANGEROUS BOOK: THE BATTLE FOR JAMES JOYCE'S ULYSSES., Birmingham, Kevin. (James Joyce.)
3 Birmingham, Kevin. (James Joyce.) THE MOST DANGEROUS BOOK: THE BATTLE FOR JAMES JOYCE'S ULYSSES.
New York Penguin 2014 1594203369 / 9781594203367 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
417 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs. "For more than a decade, the book that literary critics now consider the most important novel in the English language was illegal to own, sell, advertise or purchase in most of the English-speaking world. James Joyce's big blue book, 'Ulysses', ushered in the modernist era and changed the novel for all time. But the genius of 'Ulysses' was also its danger: it omitted absolutely nothing. All of the minutiae of Leopold Bloom's day, including its unspeakable details, unfold with careful precision in its pages. The New York Society for the Suppression of Vice immediately banned the novel as 'obscene, lewd, and lascivious'. Joyce, along with some of the most important publishers and writers of his era, had to fight for years to win the freedom to publish it. (This book) tells the remarkable story surrounding 'Ulysses', from the first stirrings of Joyce's inspiration in 1904 to its landmark federal obscenity trial in 1933." Several soft wrinkles/indentations on free front endpaper - migrate slightly into two other pages, light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very tiny tear at bottom of spine, minor edge wrinkling.

THE MAKING OF THE ENGLISH BIBLE., Bobrick, Benson.
4 Bobrick, Benson. THE MAKING OF THE ENGLISH BIBLE.
Weidenfeld & Nicolson, London, 2001, first British edition.
376 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0297607723 "(T)races the story across the Protestant-Catholic divide of the sixteenth century as the struggle to complete a vernacular Bible was fought among competeing factions. As ( the author) tells in his enthralling history it was the culmination of centuries of work by various translators and a committee of scholars who in 1604 were brought together to collaborate on what became known as the King James version. Their t r a n s lation - substantially based on the work of John Wycliffe and William Tyndale and others - shaped English literature and speech for centuries giving us what have become such commonly used expressions as: 'labour of love', 'a thorn in the fle sh ', ' th e root of all evil', 'the fat of the land', 'the sweat of thy brow', 'to cast pearls before swine' and 'the shadow of death' among a host of others. (This book) shows the profound effect the English Bible had on law and society. By giv ing ev ery li terate person access to the sacred text it helped to foster the spirit of inquiry through reading and reflection. Once individuals were free to interpret the word of God according to the light of their own understanding, they began to q uest ion the authority of their inherited institutions, both religious and secular. This led to the reformation within the Church, the rise of constitutional government in England and ultimately the end of the divine right of kings. In Benson Bobr ick's vie w th e English Civil War was fought in the light (and shadow) of such ideas, culminating in the Glorious Revolution of 1688. 'The Making of the English Bible' is about a crucial epoch in the history of Christianity, about the Engli sh lan guage and s ociet y, and about a book that changed the course of human events." Minor indentation on rear board, a few very small bumps (one with tiny tear) at top edge of front board. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top of hinges and fl ap-fold s, one tiny tear a rchivally taped, tiny corner crease at top corner of front flap. Very Good/Very Good+

12 Donegan, Rosemary. Introduction by Rick Salutin. SPADINA AVENUE
Vancouver Douglas & McIntyre 1985 0888944721 / 9780888944726 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
192 pp, 11 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "Spadina has been the starting point for wave after wave of new Canadian immigrants. Once the main focus for Jewish culture and life in Toronto, the street became a centre of commerce and saw intense political activity during the thirties and forties. Now the Jewish garment factories overlook bustling Chinese sidewalk markets. Greek cafes jostle with delicatessens and Szechuan restaurants. Contemporary art and music thrive amidst this colourful ethnic diversity. Studios and alternative galleries crowd abandoned warehouse space above street level, and all along the street, such classic watering holes as Grossman's, the El Macombo, the Paramount and the Silver Dollar dispense entertainment for tastes that run from black and new wave music to strippers. (This book) presents a collection of photographs and related texts ranging from the years when the street was a tree-lined boulevard, right through to today, when the Queen Street art scene and a rapidly expanding Chinatown are transforming Spadina. Drawing on his own Jewish roots and family history, Rick Salutin provides a very personal introduction that demonstrates how and why Spadina is unique, why it has become so important to those whose lives it has intersected. Organized to reflect and even recreate the Spadina experience, (it) takes the reader up the street starting at the lakeshore and ending at Bloor Street." Very tiny bump at top corner of both boards, small slight bump at top of rear hinge. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of spine and flap-folds.

New York Holt, Rinehart and Winston 1975 0030150914 / 9780030150913 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Various.
399 pp, 10" H. Pictorial endpapers, profusely illustrated throughout with b&w drawings and colour plates. "Who does not have vivid memories of characters from the books of childhood? Alice in Wonderland, Brer Rabbit, Dr Dolittle, Paddington Bear, the Railway Children, Winnie the Pooh, Tom Sawyer - the list is endless. Many names are so familiar - favourites from generation to generation - that they need no repeating; others are half forgotten; some may be almost unknown. This book is for everyone who wishes to recapture those memories and to find fresh inspiration for reading. It is a personal collection of characters from the world of children's fiction, by an author widely known and respected for her extensive knowledge on the subject. Entries include not only human characters but humanized or personalized animals, toys and vehicles, fairy and folk tale characters. The distinctive qualities of each are evoked in the writing - their appearance, mannerisms, speech, details of background, their role within the story - so that the reader recaptures or is introduced to the essential personality of the character concerned. From Margery Fisher's pertinent critical comments one is given an indication of the quality and status of the book in question. Approximately 400 illustrations accompany the text, showing not only the well-known representations of the characters, but title pages, authors' photographs, and scenes from film treatments. This is an invaluable treasury in which to look up characters from children's books, trace where they appeared, find their authors and first publication dates. It will inspire enthusiasm to read books not previously known and can be read by anyone for pure enjoyment." Home life and training, schooldays, sports, and pastimes are each presented so accurately and vividly as to b ro ad en t h e vi ew o f any one, old or young. He tells entertainingly of Guy Fawkes Day, which is to English boys what Fourth of July is to ours, and explains the many traditional features connected with Christmas, with many amusing anecdotes. Mu ch val uab le i nfo rma tio n is given about industries, and, with pleasing variety, the game of cricket is fully covered. The beautiful Lake region of famous poets is told of with a charm of style that fits the subject. Toronto Doubleday Canada 1973 0385049013 / 9780385049016 Book Club (BCE/BOMC) Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
300 pp, 8 3/8" H. "Here are the further misadventures of Bartholomew Bandy, World War I Ace extraordinaire introduced in 'Three Cheers for Me'. Bandy is once again lending his peculiar talents to the war effort. Fate has smiled (perhaps leered) on him and he is now a Lt. Colonel and liaison officer in London for the Secretary of State for Air. Most of Bandy's liaisons leave something to be desired. A penniless Bolshevik spy bullies him into buying a gaudy painting by an upstart named Matisse, a buxom widow makes forward advances at him under his fiancee's nose, and he's almost lynched when the Prime Minister, Lloyd George, picks him to make a speech denouncing the British Chief of Staff. Instead he's sent off to the trenches of France - to join a freewheeling bicycle brigade with unorthodox methods of killing Germans and staying in high spirits. Bandy is also subjected to a number of other horrors: an evening in a Dublin pub with a band of Irish rebels, a fox-hunt where, under Bandy's inspired directions, the hounds end up in his host's house, an unforgettable honeymoon in a Scottish castle, and an English country fair that could have been directed by Mack Sennett." Previous owner's embossed stamp mark on free front endpaper, tiny dint on half-title page, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light edge wear, light browning to top and for-edge of text block. Dust jacket has light edge browning - mainly on inside edge, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor edge wear, minor fading to spine color, two tiny closed perforations on front hinge, a few tiny stains on inside bottom edge of rear panel, two tiny scuffs on rear hinge.
