SUPERMARINE ATTACKER, SWIFT AND SCIMITAR. POSTWAR MILITARY AIRCRAFT: 7., Birtles, Philip.
3 Birtles, Philip. SUPERMARINE ATTACKER, SWIFT AND SCIMITAR. POSTWAR MILITARY AIRCRAFT: 7.
Ian Allan, Shepperton, Surrey, 1992, first edition.
112 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0711020345 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, drawings/diagrams. "The name Supermarine is universally associated with the Spitfire, an aircraft which helped to defeat the Luft waffe during the Battle of Britain; the company's fundamental role in the development of Britain's military jet aircraft is less well known. Although now overshadowed by the success of the Hawker Hunter and of the BAC Lightning, the Supermari n e A t t acker, Swift and Scimitar were among the most influential of Britain's post-war military aircraft. The Attacker, first flown in 1946, was the first jet fighter to be standardised on for squadron service with the Fleet Air Arm. The Attac ke r w as f ol lowed by the Swift. The first of this type of jet interceptor flew in 1951 and was introduced to squadron service in February 1954; it thus gained the distinction of being the first swept-wing jet fighter to enter service with the R oya l Ai r F orc e, beating the Hawker Hunter by several months. The teething problems apparent with the Swift, however, ensured that it was the Hunter that was to go on to great success. Further success was to come to the Supermarine company with the S cim itar . A gai n destined for the Fleet Air Arm, the Scimitar holds the distinction of being the first swept-wing single-seat jet fighter in service with the FAA as well as being the first FAA aircraft to be equipped to carry atomic weapo ns. (Th e au thor) narr ates the often dramatic history of these influential, but now unfairly ignored, aircraft. Forty years after the event the book will enable the aviation historian to appreciate better the importance of Supermarine's role in the dev elopm ent of Brita in's military jet aircraft." Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds. Fine/Very Good

281 pp, 8vo (8 3/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0668051620 B&w photographs, three-view diagrams. "Credited with seventy-two victories, Canadian ace Billy Bishop ranked fourth among Allied and German aces of World War I. Long out of prin t, this aviation classic has been expanded with new photographs and updated by supplementary material on First World War planes and pilots....(Bishop, who received every British decoration of valor, including the Victoria Cross) was also a sk i l l f u l writer and 'Winged Warfare' vividly recreates those early days - both comic and tragic - when the deadly 'airborne jalopy' was getting its trial run. He describes the dank, slimy and boggy mud that soured him on land combat. And the w ri ti ng c ra ck l es when (he) relives flying his Nieuport Scout, armed with a single Lewis gun. It was in this tiny plane that he dodged the 'Archies' (German anti-aircraft batteries and outfought and outmaneuvered the scarlet-winged Fokkers flo wn by Bar on von Ri ch thofen's formidable squadron. Here, too, are the joys and terrors of daily dogfights, a life of extraordinary contrasts. Complete with a chronology of World War I, Bishop's confirmed victories, airplanes flown by Bishop in Wor ld War I, list s by co untry of Allied and enemy aces, and aircraft specifications and data." 48 pp, 9 3/4" H. B&w photographs, drawings, diagrams, map. 8 pages of colour uniform studies. "The Second World War was Britain's last as a world power; it was a citizen's war, in which most British men and women were mobilised. For a year it saw Britain standing alone aginst the fascist dictatorships; and winning it cost the sacrifice of the entire national wealth. This first title of three describes and explains the uniforms developed for European service. It traces the appearance of the 'Tommy' from pre-war mobilisation, through the years of defeat and endurance, to the final return to Europe on D-Day and the long fighting advance to northern Germany by the spring of 1945. Uniform information is supported by a campaign summary, infantry organisation tables, lists of arms and services, and basic specifications of a number of heavy weapons."
