YESTERDAY'S TOWN: WELLINGTON. A DIARY OF A WEST COUNTRY TOWN IN THE 19th CENTURY., Allen, Gillian.
1 Allen, Gillian. YESTERDAY'S TOWN: WELLINGTON. A DIARY OF A WEST COUNTRY TOWN IN THE 19th CENTURY.
Buckingham Barracuda 1987 0860232921 / 9780860232926 Limited Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
124 pp, small 4to (10 7/16" H). Number 368 of a limited edition. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "(I)t is the detail of the 19th century record which attracts us most; the people who lived in specific houses like the Millers, Langleys and Merediths; the controversy about the three posts outside the White Hart Inn; the shops that changed from bank to fishmonger, from watchmaker to cobbler, from Bell Inn to basketmaker; the man who dug a canal in his garden to employ poor people; the ten-year-old who died when her pinny caught fire; the horse that took nine men to the gallows. Here too is the fire brigade whose captain refused entry to his own team as his cottage blazed away; the riots when a cemetery was proposed; the earliest chapels built and closed; Ann Pain, who stole a bullock's heart on St. Valentine's Day; Mr Marks, who lost 50 Pounds at Wellington Fair; elderly Maria Strippling, sentenced to seven days' labour for pinching threepennorth of hay; and the 4,703 tramps who came to Wellington in 1865. Transport changed the town, when the turnpikes, canal, railway and finally motorcar came. The first car owner was heavily fined; the first acceptable motor hit the Town Hall. Taverns prospered, and there were 75 at one time or another. Thirteen survive. The greatest change of all came with the Great War - 'our old world has gone forever' said the local 'rag'. That world is recreated (here) - in a fluent, fascinating and fact-packed narrative and some 200 pictures, many of them rare, and most unique to this book." Book is slightly cocked. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top edge, a few small faint indentations on panels, minor rubbing.

Newton Abbot David & Charles 1972 0715349252 / 9780715349250 Second Impression. Hard Cover Very Good Good+ W.R.F. Jenkinson.
215 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). B&w illustrations. "Once aptly described as 'chess with a thousand pieces', wargaming can be made as complicated and elaborate as desired, or so simple that even young children can take part. This book - the ideal introduction to the hobby - explains what wargaming is all about, how armies can be assembled and how, on any reasonably-sized table, realistic engagements can be fought by tactical manoeuvring. The basic rules by which forces are moved and casualties assessed are explained, there is practical advice on making one's own soldiers and on conversions, and guidance on how to prepare and lay out realistic battlefield scenes. Another great attraction of the wargaming hobby is the research it invites into famous campaigns of the past, and not the least valuable part of this book is its brief survey of warfare from earliest times to the present day. Here the military tactics of each period are considered, together with the role of the different types of soldiers and their weapons, and there is an extensive bibliography to facilitate research into specific periods of military history." Very small bump at top edge of front board, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny light stain on fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling, a few tiny chips, one small tear archivally taped, light browning at inside edges.

11 Frank, Barbara E. MANDE POTTERS & LEATHERWORKERS: ART AND HERITAGE IN WEST AFRICA.
Smithsonian Institution Press, Washington, (1998), Ist printing.
192 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1560987944 Profusely illustrated with b&w and color photos and drawings. "Among the Mande-speaking groups dispersed throughout much of West Africa, certain artists - including potters and l eatherworkers - form a spiritually powerful social class in which gender determines craft specialization. Ceramic water jars and cooking pots are made only by the wives and female relatives of blacksmiths. Leather objects such as knife shea t h s , a m ulet cases, and, more recently, western-style shoes and bags are produced by male leatherworkers. While these objects display features common to those of other West African groups, the manner in which they are produced has remained dis ti nc tl y M an de . Analyzing the work of Mande potters and leatherworkers, (the author) argues that studying craft technologies in addition to object styles is essential to reconstructing the art heritage of an ethnically complex region. Drawing on ar cha eo lo gic al and historical evidence as well as her field research in Mali, she shows how tools and practices such as potters' use of convex molds and leatherworkers' adherence to specific knife blade shapes serve to distinguish the good s ma de b y Ma nde ar tist s f rom those of neighboring groups. She also discusses the pride the potters take in their healing and spiritual knowledge, and the sense of difference between craftsmen who specialize exclusively in leatherworking and those who doubl e as bar ds an d mu sicians. Examining the roles of Mande leatherworkers and potters in the rise and fall of empires, the development of trans-Saharan trade networks, and the spread of Islam, Frank questions the 'one-tribe, one-st yle' i nterp retati ons t hat h ave do minat ed studies of West African art. Focusing on two traditions that have been little studied, (this book) explores the complex, shifting relationships among the identities of Mande craftspeople, the objects they cr eate, and the techn ologie s they use."
