"This is the outstanding story of a Royal Air Force Volunteer Reservist who flew in the Battle of Britian and kept an exciting day-to-day diary of his experiences. Later, shot down over Northern France, he evaded capture and made his way home through Spain and Gibraltar with the help of the French Resistance Workers and the Allied escape organization. Again he wrote a vivid account of his exploits, but was unable to complete it because after a few months in the UK on fighter operations he was sent off to the Middle East in command of a squadron. There, after only a few weeks he was shot down and killed over El Alamein when leading his pilots on an operation on the evening of 17th July 1942. He was 22." London J.M. Dent & Sons 1930 Revised and Enlarged Edition. Hard Cover Good Very Good
242 pp, 6 13/16" H. Map endpapers, decorated title page. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w maps, plus 8 plates depicting coins. "The transformation, bit by bit, of a wilderness into the category of a Europeanized civilization may be comprehended from a series of maps which shows the ever advancing line of settlement as it first gnawed away the forests of the sea coast, and then after trickling through mountain passes, seeped across the plains to be stopped finally by the Pacific Ocean. Waterways, roads, and more recently, the railroads, have contributed to the movement of the past towards the fulfilment of the present. The following maps portray the expanding movements of new nations as two continents were wrested from a wilderness. The coloured maps locate states, towns, waterways, advancing frontiers, routes of travel, population densities, and industries. The black and white maps, besides those showing battle alignments and military campaigns, contain many specimens of early maps with their quaint antiquarian charm." Includes "A Brief Survey of the Coinage of North and South America" by G.C. Brooke, "A Gazetteer of Towns and Places in America having a Literary or Historic Interest", "Contributions to the Literature of the United States" and an Index. "The 'son' of the Northrop YF-17 Cobra, the Hornet grew both in weight and capability after being ordered by the Navy to replace the vene rable Vought A-7 Corsair II. Now an integral part of the modern carrier air wing, the F/A-18 has dramatically increased the capabilities of fighter and attack squadrons already embarked aboard the Navy's 15-strong carrier fleet. Not all Hornet s s p otted in American skies are Navy property though, the 'flying leathernecks' of the US Marine Corps having received their first F/A-18s at virtually the same time as the 'blue water' force. Over a dozen USMC squadrons are now equipped with th e v er sa tile Hornet. Travelling further afield, Canada, Australia, Spain and South Korea have all chosen the F/A-18 to fulfill the fighter/attack requirements of their respective air forces past the year 2000. (This book) takes you aboard ship w it h a f ron tline Navy squadron as they patrol the barren expanses of the Atlantic, or takes you on a scrub skimming attack sortie over the parched wastelands of the 'outback' with the Royal Australian Air Force." It retains a close fidelity to known facts ab out the life of one of the finest generals the world has ever known, but it reads like an historical novel....This book recreates the amazing life and times of this military genius, charismatic leader, astute manager of resources, efficien t p u b l i c a dministrator, and great champion of democracy. Most of what we know about Hannibal was written by his enemies over 2,000 years ago. Their writings show a grudging admiration for the brilliant Hannibal, but they are written from t he Ro ma n pe rs pe c ti ve, with the prejudices of his bitter enemies. 'Hannibal's Lieutenant' interprets the fascinating facts and situations as Hannibal and his supporters would have seen them, with their own prejudices. Once war was declared by h is gov er nme nt, Ha nn iba l became a victim of political gridlock and inaction by politicians of the Carthaginian government in Africa. Political enemies in Carthage, more than the Roman soldiers in Italy, were responsible for his failure t o d ef eat Rom e.. ..Ha nnib al c ome s al ive as the story follows his life: from his early years to commanding general of Carthaginian forces in Spain at age 25; from climbing the hazardous Alps with his army and elephants to invade Italy at age 26 t o f ight ing R oman s in Italy for 16 y ears with no major defeats; through public adminstrator in Carthage for seven years after the war, where he reformed the government by eliminating graft and corruption and changed it from rule by a privi leged few to t he mos t dem ocrat ic gov ernme nt in the Hellenistic world; from military consultant of the king of Syria in Ephesus where he accompanied the king during Syria's invasion of Greece and later led a fleet of warships in a sea battle to hi s ref uge on the is land o f Cret e; thro ugh hi s stin t as consultant to the king of Bithynia after fleeing Crete; and finally to his suicide at age 64 in 183 B.C." 16 Connelly, Owen. BLUNDERING TO GLORY: NAPOLEON'S MILITARY CAMPAIGNS.
Scholarly Resources, Wilmington, 1987, book club edition.
250 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Maps/battle plans. " 'You engage, and then you wait and see' - so Napoleon characterized his art of war. The greatest general of his day was a scrambler who never had a plan, strategic or tactica l, that did not break down or change of necessity in the field. He was the master of the broken play, so confident of his ability to improvise, cover his own mistakes, and capitalize on those of his enemies that he repeatedly plunged his arm i e s i n t o uncertain, seemingly desperate situations, only to emerge victorious, 'blundering' to glory. In this absorbing new book, historian Owen Connelly explores for the first time this aspect of Napoleon's battlefield genius. At the same t im e, h e o ff er s a complete account of the Napoleonic campaigns - at once the most concise and most accurate history in print." 395 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w illustrations. "(T)ells the story of a journey in the strange world of alleged apparitions, prophecies, miracles of healing, levitation, holy relics, weeping statues, stigmata and demonic possession. Cornwell follows the trail through Yugoslavia, Ireland, Spain, the United States, Canada, Italy and Britain, in search of proof of divine, or diabolical, intervention. He encounters the teenage Marian visionaries of Medjugorje, Sister Briege McKenna, the healing nun, and the ghostly influence of the stigmatic Padre Pio. He investigates the Shroud of Turin, the liquefaction of the blood of St Januarius in Naples, a Eucharistic miracle in the Bronx and a weeping plaque of the Virgin in Sicily. He describes a curious and sometimes sinister landscape inhabited by prophets, saints, charismatic political leaders and exorcists, and finds himself in conversation with Graham Greene, Professor A.J. Ayer and the distinguished Jesuit philosopher Father Frederick Copleston. Cornwell's journey culminates in an imaginative and original perspective that demonstrates the moral and spiritual benefits of popular mystical phenomena, while redeeming them from scientific debunking and fundamentalist literalism." SECRETS OF THE GOTHA. PRIVATE LIVES OF THE ROYAL FAMILIES OF EUROPE., Diesbach, Ghislain de. Translated from the French by Margaret Crosland.
20 Diesbach, Ghislain de. Translated from the French by Margaret Crosland. SECRETS OF THE GOTHA. PRIVATE LIVES OF THE ROYAL FAMILIES OF EUROPE.
New York Barnes & Noble. 1993 156619086X / 9781566190862 Reprint Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
392 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). "For this witty account of the European nobility, (the author) has taken as his inspiration that most illustrious of social registers: the 'Almanch de Gotha', first published in 1764 and still on the shelves of all who look back with nostalgia upon 'that happy period - when the monarchic principle was so firmly anchored in people's minds that it seemed impossible for a country to exist unless there was a sovereign, emperor, king, prince, or grand duke at its head'. The author, himself a scion of a princely family, has inherited a clear perspective of the main thoroughfares of history, and a great knowledge of its byways. He approaches his subject with a light touch, even at times with irreverence - for, in his own words: 'The secrets of the Gotha, whispered to me by the ghosts of long-dead chamberlains, evoke the spirit on an age whose frivolities alone have survived. The inheritance of the duchies of Schleswig or Holstein no longer vexes the world at large; but the fate of the unfortunate Electress of Hanover, shut up for thirty years by her husband for having shown too much enthusiasm for the handsome Koenigsmark, still moves us; and the madness of King Ludwig II of Bavaria, the indecorous loves of Queen Isabella of Spain, or the eccentricities of Caroline, Princess of Wales, are more interesting today than the War of the Roses, the continence of Scipio or the virtues of Blanche of Castile. It is by their weaknesses that men are human, and kings cannot escape being men. But though their weaknesses may be the cause of their undoing, it is their humanity that most engages our sympathy today. Bad examples are the easiest to follow ; they are also the most amusing to relate." Dust jacket has slight fading to color and lettering on spine, minor edge wrinkling and minor browning on inside top edge.
