BRASS BANDS OF YORKSHIRE., Cooper, T.L.
1 Cooper, T.L. BRASS BANDS OF YORKSHIRE.
Dalesman, Clapham, 1974, first edition.
166 pp, 8 1/2" H, soft cover. B&w photographs, 2 short scores. ISBN 0852061951 "A pastime - if not a way of life - which has an enormous following in Yorkshire is that of sounding brass. Yet the world of the brass band has been remarkably little documented, especially in the northern counties. This deficiency was realised by T.L. Cooper, who accordingly commenced to compile this history. The 168 pages of this book not only record much valuable social history which was in danger of be i n g lost, but also contains many anecdotes epitomising the outlook of the dedicated Yorkshire bandsmen. An appendix lists all bands know to have existed in the county." Interior - light cigarette odor, tiny crease at bottom of first few pages, ot he rw i se clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - very light browning - mainly on spine, faint crease on spine, very light edge wear, front hinge crease, tiny soft corner creases on front cover, minor rubbing. Very Good-

2 Hughes, Monica. THE SEVEN MAGPIES.
Toronto HarperCollins 1996 0002245493 / 9780002245494 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
148 pp, 8 5/8" H. "Britain has just declared war on Germany and (Maureen's) father has been sent to the Front, where casualties are heavy. Her mother is trooping off eagerly - too eagerly, (she) thinks - to London 'to help with the war effort'. And Maureen is being shipped off to the stuffy-sounding Logan Academy for Young Ladies, a remote but supposedly safe boarding school in the Scottish Highlands. The girls at the school are just as Maureen expects: cold and cliquish, completely cowed by their cruel ringleader, Kathleen. But there's also something weird about these girls, something sinister. Why do they slip away in the middle of the night, one by one, to visit the woods surrounding the school? What's their secret society, called the Seven Magpies, all about - and why does it make them seem so nervous? It isn't until Maureen herself falls under the spell of a strange stone, a stone that compels her to leave it offerings of food, that she begins to understand what's making her schoolmates seem so strange. And then she discovers what the real danger is - - . A realistic yet magical story of what happens when a group of teenagers tampers with the ancient power of the Celts." Both book and dust jacket are clean and bright.

HITLER. 1889-1936: HUBRIS., Kershaw, Ian.
4 Kershaw, Ian. HITLER. 1889-1936: HUBRIS.
W.W. Norton, New York, 1999, book club edition.
845 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "From his birth in a small Austrian village to his fiery death in a bunker under the Reich chancellery in Berlin, Adolf Hitler left a murky trail, strewn with contradictory tales and overgrown with self-created myths. One truth prevails: the sheer scale of the evils that he unleashed on the world has made him a demonic figure without equal in this century....In an account drawing on many previously untapped so u r c e s - including Joseph Goebbels's diaries, recently discovered in Moscow - Hitler metamorphoses from an obscure fantasist, a 'drummer' sounding an insistent beat of hatred in Munich beer halls, to the instigator of the infamous failed putsch , to t he l e ad ership of a ragtag alliance of right-wing bullies and fanatics whose fusion created the Nazi party - the movement that would enthrall and invigorate a disillusioned people desperate to be rescued from the economic privation of pos tw ar Ger man y. W ith nuanced care, Kershaw assesses the response of ordinary Germans to Hitler the man and to his message of a new dawn for a country hemmed in by old foes, a message shot through with racist fantasies. This volume, the first of tw o, ends wit h t he prom ulgation of the infamous Nuremberg laws that pushed German Jews to the outer fringes of society, and with the march of the German army into the Rhineland - Hitler's first steps toward the abyss of war. Fascinating and d istu rbi ng, r ich w ith ins ight and analysis whose implications remain all too relevant as we near the end of Hitler's century." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, v ery l ight rubbi ng, sc ratc h ac ross bottom of rear panel with two small areas of laminate loss. Very Good+/Very Good

176 pp, 9" H. B&w illustrations. "Was little Jack Horner a squatter? 'Baa, baa, Black Sheep' a bleat about taxation? What did Jack and Jill do on that hill? Who was Mary? And why was she contrary? This witty and ingenious book delves into the hidden meanings of the most innocuous-sounding nursery rhymes, revealing a seething subtext of sexual innuendo, religious hatred and political subversion. Toronto Macmillan Company of Canada 1957 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good+ Allan Fleming, jacket design.
138 pp, 8 1/2" H. "(S)hows Canada in an unfamiliar light - the light of an energetic and sometimes savage self-criticism. The stately pine (one of those symbolic vegetables that grow like weeds in the Canadian climate) is here blasted and eaten away by the native fires of satire and invective. But though the light is unfamiliar it has burnt steadily since the mid-nineteenth century. Almost as soon as Canadian poets appeared they were sounding a disrespectful note - a loud raspberry which echoes rudely down the corridors of history to our own day." Preface by David L. Thomson. Arranged under the headings: Prologue; True Patriot Love; Solid Citizens; Snow, Dust, Hail and Rust; The Purse-Proud Prelate; Indigenous Throstles; We Stand on Guard; Private Hells. Concludes with Notes; Acknowledgements and Index of Authors. Previous owner's circular embossed stamp on front free endpaper, very small ink line on bottom of text block, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very small chips and light wrinkling/creasing - mainly at top edge, general light browning - more on spine, small faint ink line on front panel.
