134 pp, small 4to (10 15/16" H), soft cover (three-hole punched). ISBN 0873641698 B&w illustrations. "The contents of this manual provide guidance and insight into operational procedures, tactics, and theories pertaining to Special Weapons and Ta ctics (SWAT) Operations. This manual is by no means 'all inclusive'. However, as one who has researched this subject in depth during the past six years, I will say it is the most definitive and complete manual know to me at this time. Th i s m a n u a l does not prescribe departmental policy in any given situation, rather, it provides information and illustrates procedures that will be required to make a sound decision when employing a SWAT unit." 3 Debay, Yves. THE FRENCH FOREIGN LEGION IN ACTION. EUROPA MILITARIA NO. 11.
London Windrow & Greene 1992 Soft Cover Very Good
66 pp, 10 1/8" H. Profusely illustrated with colour photographs. "In this second instalment of his photo-essay on the 'while kepis', author Yves Debay gives an exhaustive coverage of all Legion units, based in France and overseas, and describes their missions and equipment in detail. As always, the capability of the modern day Legion rests on strong infantry regiments such as 2e REI, who provided the backbone of the Legion component during the intervention in Iraq; 3e REI, guarding the gates to outer space on the Ariane launching sites in Guyana; 5e REI, safeguarding French sovereignty in the Pacific, and 13e DBLE, upholding in the horn of Africa the time-honoured desert traditions of the famous corps. Legionnaires from other elite services are not neglected, and this second volume also delves into the activities of 2e REP paratroopers, specialists in swift intervention in Africa; 1er REC cavalrymen, the 'mailed fist' of the Rapid Action Force; and 6e REG sappers, the unsung heroes who, even in peacetime, tirelessly carry out their obscure but vital missions." 5 Gilbert, Martin. THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME: THE HEROISM AND HORROR OF WAR.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 2006 0771035470 / 9780771035470 First Canadian Edition. Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
332 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, maps. "(O)n 1 July 1916, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 733 of 801 men in the 1st Newfoundland Regiment were killed. From their starting position in a British support trench, the Newfoundlanders had to cross some 230 metres of fire-swept ground before they reached their own front line. In less than a half-hour, it was all over. The divisional commander wrote of the Newfoundland effort: 'It was a magnificent display of trained and disciplined valour, and its assault failed of success because dead men can advance no further.' Well might the Germans refer to the Battle of the Somme as das Blutbad - the bloodbath. From 1 July to 15 November 1916, a period of just 138 days, more than 310,000 soldiers from four great armies, the British, Canadian, French, and German, were killed. The German death toll on the Somme was larger than that of all the Allied forces combined. The heroism of the Dominion troops moved British prime minister David Lloyd George to write: 'The Canadians played a part of such distinction that thenceforth they were marked as storm troops. Coming into the line, they prepared for the worst.' After four and a half months of fighting, the Allied armies had not reached the line they set for themselves for the first day of battle. In this vivid, deeply researched account of one of history's most destructive battles, (the author) tracks (it) through the experiences of footsoldiers, generals, and everyone in between. Interwoven with photographs, journal entries, original maps, and documents from every stage and level of planning, (this book) is the most authoritative and affecting account of this bloody turning point in the Great War." Slight cigarette odor. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

KITCHENER'S MOB: THE ADVENTURES OF AN AMERICAN IN THE BRITISH ARMY., Hall, James Norman.
6 Hall, James Norman. KITCHENER'S MOB: THE ADVENTURES OF AN AMERICAN IN THE BRITISH ARMY.
Thomas Allen, Toronto, 1916, first Canadian edition.
201 pp, small 8vo (7 1/2" H), hard cover (red cloth with black lettering on spine and front board) - no dust jacket. "This brief narrative is by no means a complete record of life in a battalion of one of Lord Kitchener's first armies. It is, rath er, a story in outline, a mere suggestion of that life as it is lived in the British lines along the Western Front. If those who read gain thereby a more intimate view of trench warfare, and of the men who are so gallantly and cheerfully lay i n g d o w n their lives for England, the purpose of the writer will have been accomplished." Book slightly cracked at two places, tiny stain at top edge of half-title and title page, moderate browning to edges of text block, tiny stain in margin s of p a ge s 19 0 &191 - migrates into adjacent pages, light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, scattered small soiling marks/stains on boards. 8 Kyle, Chris. With William Doyle. Editorial contributions by Jim Defelice. Foreword and afterword by Taya Kyle. AMERICAN GUN: A HISTORY OF THE U.S. IN TEN FIREARMS.
New York William Morrow 2013 0062242717 / 9780062242716 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
302 pp, 9 1/4" H. Pictorial endpapers, b&w illustrations. "Drawing on his unmatched firearms knowledge and combat experience, Kyle carefully chose ten guns to help tell (American history): the American long rifle, Spencer repeater, Colt. 45 revolver, Winchester rifle, Springfield 1903 rifle, Thompson submachine gun, 1911 pistol, M1 Garand, .38 Special police revolver, and the M16 rifle platform Kyle himself used as a SEAL. Through them, he revisits thrilling turning points in American history, including the single sniper shot that turned the tide of the Revolutionary War, the firearms designs that proved decisive at Gettsyburg, the 'gun that won the West', and the weapons that gave U.S. soldiers an edge in the world wars and beyond. This is also the story of how firearms innovation, creativity, and industrial genius has constantly pushed American history - and power - forward." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. PEACEKEEPER: THE ROAD TO SARAJEVO., MacKenzie, Lewis.
9 MacKenzie, Lewis. PEACEKEEPER: THE ROAD TO SARAJEVO.
Vancouver Douglas & McIntyre 1993 155054098X / 9781550540987 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
345 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps. "Brave, tough, resourceful, and, rarest of all, blessed with an irreverent sense of humour, (Major-General Lewis) MacKenzie needed all those qualities for the biggest assignment of his military career: striving for peace among the warring factions in the former Yugoslavia. In this riveting memoir, MacKenzie describes how he created Sector Sarajevo, and with a 30-nation UN force set out to liberate the airport to receive desperately needed food and medical supplies. MacKenzie's outstanding and unorthodox leadership catapulted him to the status of an international celebrity, as he used the media - 'the only weapon I had' - to maximum advantage. Against the daily drama of shelling, sabotage, murder and shameless propaganda, motivated by ethnic hatreds, MacKenzie's adventures in Sarajevo read like a war novel - except that it is all tragically true. With the verve of a natural storyteller, (he) also recounts the often bizarre highlights of eight previous peacekeeping tours in the Middle East, Cyprus and Vietnam. From bluffing his way through the Turkish-Cypriot lines to boisterous forays into Saigon's netherworld; from basketball in the Gaza Strip to dodging sniper fire in Sarajevo; from daring diplomatic improvisations to bluntly outspoken criticisms of the UN bureaucracy: here is a veteran peackeeper's frank, funny and unforgettable story." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine/front hinge. Dust jacket has minor rubbing, tiny tear and wrinkling at bottom of front hinge/front panel.
